With tonight being the annual AFL Hall of Fame dinner I decided to cast my eye over the legends and players admitted to the AFL Hall of Fame.

To my amazement, Garry Lyon is not even a player within the AFL Hall of Fame.

I then had a quick look at Garry's achievements over his career:

226 games (1986-1999)
426 goals
MFC Captain (1991 to 1997)
MFC Best & Fairest (1990 & 1994)
MFC Leading Goal Kicker (1994, 1995)
Melbourne FC Team of the Century
Melbourne FC 150 Hero
Melbourne FC Life Member (1995)
All Australian (1993, 1994, 1995)
Victorian State Team (1988, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995)
Victorian State Team Captain (1994)
Media Association Player of the Year (1995)

Clearly I must be missing something if the above achievements don't warrant Garry being in the AFL Hall of Fame?

Not even in the conversation because of the era he was in. Overshadowed by Ablett, Dunstall, Plugger, Carey.

Our 94 forward line was a state of origin level team.
Garry Lyon David Schwarz Andy Lovell
Sean Charles Allen Jakovich Martin Pyke

Our all time leading goal kicker couldn't get a gig in the forward line until Jako and Ox both got injured.

To those who are too young to remember how good this bloke was as a player, he was a champion player but he gets a bad rap because he was seen as a prick of a bloke. The performances he produced in finals were the true mark of a champion and his absence from the hall of fame, especially when players of far less quality are regularly getting in is a slur on the whole process.

I saw Lyon's entire career and he was a beautifully balanced and smooth moving tall. A lovely kick and good when the ball was on the deck. He read the play well and was an excellent leader. And I'd rate him as a classier player than Neitz.

He may well in time make the HoF, but if I had to be critical of a part of his game it was his marking. Lyon marked well on a lead, but was a crap overhead mark. He virtually never pack marked in an era when talls were expected to pack mark and when he did I don't know who was more surprised, him or me.

In many ways I reckon he was a better CHB than forward, but he played very well at both ends.
