How frightening was the WACA?

I first saw cricket at the WACA in the 70s and was lucky enough to see Holding, Roberts, Marshall, Lillee, Thomson etc... let loose on the fastest wicket in the world. Truly frightening stuff.

I remember Greg Chappel coming in for a one day match against the Windies when he had 4 ducks in a row and needed a score. The WACA crowd booed him as he walked to the wicket as they thought he should have been dropped and he got a fast bouncer at his throat first ball from Holding that he gloved to Haynes. Totally unplayable ball. Australia were 6 for 80 at one stage in that game !

It was only 8 years ago when Brett Lee bowled a vicious spell in The Ashes test. Ask Alex Tudor about it?

No excuses for the Aussie batsmen yesterday that surrendered their wickets meekly.

There was a one day game between WA & QLD in the late 70's when WA batted first and got rissoled for about 90. Viv Richards was playing for QLD and Lillee was simply frightening and rolled QLD for about 75. I saw it recently think it was on the ABC.

Worth watching if you can get it. Wicket was super quick.

WA all for 77. Queensland all 62.

Lillee opened with a barrage of bouncers to Viv who was opening, then clean bowled him for a duck.

The "Miracle Match" !

Interesting to note that whilst the WACA pitch is noted for assisting pace bowlers, three of Test cricket's six fastest centuries have been scored at the WACA:

56 balls Viv Richards . W. Indies v Eng, St. John's 1986
57 balls Adam Gilchrist Aust v Eng, Perth, 2006-07
67 balls Jack Gregory . Aust v S. Africa, Johannesburg, 1921-2
69 balls Shiv Chanderpaul W. Indies v Aust, Georgetown, 2003
70 balls Chris Gayle . .W. Indies v Aust, Perth, 2009-10
71 balls Roy Fredericks W. Indies v Aust, Perth, 1975-6

Also, a look at the fastest first class centuries for the past Australian seasons also sees the WACA feature prominently.

2003-04 84 balls Adam Gilchrist (113*) AUST vs ZIM, Perth
. . . . 84 balls Matthew Hayden (101*) AUST vs ZIM, Sydney
2004-05 78 balls Justin Langer (134) Western Aust vs NSW, Perth
2005-06 86 balls Brad Haddin (116) NSW vs Western Aust, Sydney
2006-07 57 balls Adam Gilchrist (102*) AUST vs ENG, Perth
2007-08 51 balls Luke Ronchi (105*) Western Aust vs Qld, Perth
2008-09 90 balls Callum Ferguson (132) South Aust vs Qld, Brisbane
2009-10 70 balls Chris Gayle (102) W. INDIES vs AUST, Perth
2010-11 86 balls Andrew McDonald (163) Vic vs Western Aust, Perth

Was pretty quick and violent on Friday !
Mitchell Johnson's spell was as venomous as some of the best seen at the WACA ! His bouncer to Collingwood was one of the best I've seen live !

Look up Ambrose spell at the WACA on youtube.

That has to be the deadliest spell ever at the WACA.

Very good spell from Johnson but not even as vicious as Brett Lees a few years back. Lille, Thomson, Holding, Roberts, Garner, Ambrose all bowled deadlier spells than that.

It showed up England's lack of technique on bouncier pitches with a bit of movement though.

In the one dayers against India?

Absolutely brutal spell that was

The day McGrath took his hat-trick (and 300th wicket) against the Windies I think they were 5 for 22 in the first hour.

This year's pitch looked good to me, best we've had for a few years. And the greenest I've ever seen at the WACA.

It can be bastard early, but get yourself in and the runs are there, hence the fast high scores that have been made over the years.

I can't remember who it was against but I remember once when Hayden/Langer opened one of them had passed fifty while the other was only on one. (May have been Hayden on the way to his 380 v Zimbabwe?) So if you're seeing them, you can have a very good day out.

Agreed - the best test pitch I can remember for a good while.

Put your nose over the ball you can make runs, pitch the ball up you can take wickets. A good contest between bat and ball

It seemed like England were aware of that in the first innings, then they forgot !

It was a very good cricket wicket. The fact that it finished so early is due to a lack of technique and application from modern day batsmen.

the main wicket was certainly quicker than in the past few years.

the training wickets on the other hand are very very quick, i was in the nets two weeks ago and my 15 yr old was bowling and my god it was bouncy and very very quick:eek:
