So if I'm born in the Sudan, Bangladesh, Yemen?....Are you starting to see the point yet, as to the accident of birth?

Choices are always dependent upon an existential context.....The magic word 'choice' is not a cure-all elixir for one's circumstances in life.

Yet another Bolt failure.

Listen if your born in another country and you were not given the opportunity to be successful than take it up with that country's government .

You have a very poor understanding of economics .

If a private company does not offer a good or service that people want to purchase than they will not make any money and go broke .

Capitalism means that if companies want to survive they must give people what they want .

you have a very poor understanding of reality.

Capitalism isn't perfect but it has pulled the most people out of poverty and raised the standard of living. Your view of it benefits the top 2% is strange.. not everyone are millionaires but how many people in the capitalist world have adequate food, shelter and standards of living.. dare i suggest more than 2%.

In any case what system are you advocating? Or do you just like to complain..
Have they? Or has that been due to government policy?

Study a good degree, get a good job, work hard. In less than 2 years you might even earn more, much more than the national median and mean. * I'm living proof. Reward for effort.

Are you an arts student? The capitalism vs socialism debate has been done to death. Capitalism isn't perfect nor near it but it's got daylight on anything else. Bunch of thick *******s you are.

i actually deeply regret not being an Arts Student. computers has worked mostly but there is more to life than money.

unrestricted Capitalism has faults. Some Socialism works well on places. Some Capitalism works well in places.
Do you want to actually engage in reality or not?

Many profitable companies and high income individuals pay little or no tax, this has increased massively over the last few decades with increasing use of provisions in negative gearing, superannuation, trusts and profit shifting. And accounts for most of the underlying problems with the budget. This is not arguing for the increase intonation but fixing some of the blatant loopholes.

Australis *IS* a relatively low taxing country in overall tax take terms.

Over the last few decades the rich have been doing very nicely and have generally increased their share of societies wealth in their hands. There has been decline in full time employment and wages have stagnant and more people are at the bottom and they have less.

Hard work does not automatically equate to great wealth. There its little connection between the two. Capitalism is not a meritocracy. Capitalism is not about risk or competition. Capital those with large vested interests are of course opposed to both, those with wealth do not like unpredictable change or prospect of losing that wealth. In a broad capitalist framework that we have, those with great wealth can often use their wealth to seriously effect the market, and they do.

Really the level of debate is quite poor. Rich = good, poor = bad losers, Money = good. Apply free market policies that have repeatedly failed around the world without any effort to look at what works and under what conditions.

You just what a simplistic black and white universe, well it's not. You fundamentally seem unwilling to engage in any sort of meaningful debate which has some relevance or connection to the real world and just what to call people names.

I asked what system you are advocating? I want to look into what you think is better.

Capitalism is not perfect and does require government intervention at times. The wealth and innovation capitalism has created allows your government policies to do what they do so not sure what you are getting at.

Your only interested in applying radical Marxism to economic questions. If 1 person is rich and another is poor the rich person must be oppressing the poor person. Good decisions and hard work dont fit into your matxist world view.

The idea that a company would pay someone more without expecting them to do more in return is nonsense.

If you look at the stats you will see that the rich pay more than their fair share of tax.

I think we all agree that we need to cut back on government spending so we can start paying of this massive debt that the previous Labour government left us with . The current government has tried to make cuts but most of them keep getting blocked in the senate .

I am going to make some suggestions on ways we can cut back on government spending and I am sure others can come up with other ideas I haven't thought about.

1.Provide tax cuts to parents who send their kids to private schools and tax increases on wealthy parents who send their children to government schools

2.Close down all small government schools in metropolitan areas and merge them with other schools .

3.Decrease funding in humanitarian studies at university , courses such as journalism ,psychology ,sociology, gender studies, history ,politics and human resources .

4.Students need to pay for a greater % of their higher education studies

5.Introduce a $10 co-payment for visiting the doctor

6.Tax cut for people who have private health insurance or increase rebate

7.Close the ABC and SBS

8.Put in place a freeze on the hiring of public servants

9.Sticter requirements for the age pension, lower the assets someone can have while on the pension

10.No more student payments unless they are studying a long highly demanding and highly valued degree such as medicine

11.Stricter enforcement of the dole , no more missing appointments without losing your payments , work for the dole and welfare card to be enforced for anyone on the dole for more than 6 months , those with a disability can be excluded .

12.Merge more local councils and take away power from state governments and give them to the federal government

13.Reuction in foreign aide

14.Half immigration levels
why the hell would you want high income earners to pay more for the same thing that other people pay for. you are just as bad as the greens. disgraceful comment. high income earners already pay progressive taxes on their income and you want to penalise them again for doing the right thing and sending their kids to public school where all kids should go.

how about getting rid of tax cuts for people who invest in super or removing the capital gains discount on assets including the family home and getting rid of negative gearing. cracking down on cash payments is another. getting rid of family trusts another. getting rid of tax exemption status for religions. forcing people to pay inheritence tax another. so many better things to do that balance the budget.

Those with high incomes are benefiting more from society than those on low incomes.

I certainly dont espouse Marxism.

The idea that a company would pay someone more without expecting them to do more in return is nonsense.

And yet you are opposed to society expecting more from those it is paying more. You are somewhat inconsistent.

If you look at the stats you will see that the rich pay more than their fair share of tax.

Really there is some objective statistic which say exactly what a fair share of tax?
It's a subjective opinion.

What is yours based on. How would you determine a fair share of tax?

you have never said.

Because when parents send their kids to a private school it saves the government money. Simple really.

Increasing taxes just removes the incentive to work hard, invest and makes us less competitive on the international stage.

Listen people will not work hard and invest to pay taxes for big government.

You keep on saying the rich are not paying their share of tax, there is no evidence to back that up.

Its not possible for me to say exactly how much tax everyone should pay but the top rate needs to be less than 40 and company tax below 20. Everyone should get a tax cut .

Unfortunately the current social and political scene is as much capitalism as communism is socialism.

saves the government money by taxing high income earners higher. should they do that too? what if parents believe private schooling is immoral because it gives their kids unjust advantage and denies equal opportunity in society.

Unfortunately the current social and political scene is as much capitalism as communism is socialism.

You may need to elaborate more on this point....Particularly in reference to how bought-out governments on the part of multi-national corporations, leading to monopolies & zero tax paid, is not equivalent to free market Capitalism.

Increasing taxes just removes the incentive to work hard, invest and makes us less competitive on the international stage.
so why the hell do you want to tax high income earners higher for sending their kids to public school? Does that not reduce the incentive to work?

inheritence tax encourages the incentive to work not decreases it as it means income taxes can be lowered. removing capital gains discounts on housing dont reduce the incentive to work. taxing religions dont reduce the incentive to work.

Yep, I should elaborate, but in my understanding BigFooty has a limit on how many times a person is allowed to use the terms "degenerate", "filthy", "perverted", "foul", "masturbatory" etc to describe a social political system.
