Analysis How will the season pan out?

You can't let the losses (as soul destroying as they can sometimes be) get to you too much. We're all used to it by now.

The season will pan out however the AFL wants it to pan out. The league, the umpires, the MRP, etc all have a ridiculous amount of power to influence the outcomes of games. We just accept now that there will be constant inconsistencies in how games are umpired, not just from game to game but from decision to decision. It may be pure incompetence on the part of umpires, or it might be corruption. Whatever it is, it's made our game seem silly. It's impossible to explain the rules to a new fan. There's no justice in the tribunal system. Drug cheats are paraded as heroes. Tankers are rewarded and plastic franchises are created in places they're not really wanted or needed and then pumped full of all the best talent. It's the worst administered, officiated, commentated and media-analysed professional sports league that I follow. Which is a shame because it's the greatest game ever invented.
The thing with the afl than most sports around the world is its just one happy family with one league and nothing to worry about. Eg there is no relegation for been bad, So the afl has to protect it's product. What would happen if say Carlton Melbourne were given 2 years penalty and been rubbed out for that time? Essendon were unlucky as there was to much evidence and even than they got to keep playing.
The afl is 2 things money and protection at all costs.

TV rights is what the afl submits to. There must be 198 H/A games in a season plus the finals and they get their money.
Betting sponsorships/commissions bring in more cash than the tv rights

if you were a bomber you would have seen at least 1 premiership, not 2 whole finals wins in 35 years. bad choice.

and unless a raft of teams are banned from finals like the bombers were, we wont be getting close this year.
Ah, but the 5 premierships in just 14 more years

We need to be four goals minimum ahead in games to take the umpires out of it.

I thought they were great on interpreting the deliberate rule this week after the rort of Richmond last week with two deliberate howlers, they still made up new rorts though,Jack's shepherd, you will not see that paid again any time soon, just a blatant rort by that umpire and he needs a good talking too over his emotions taking over.

It's just a shame that anyone under 40 (like myself) never experienced any of that.

This idea of Richmond being a good club in any sense of the word is a myth to nearly half the population.

I'm getting the feeling that four or five posters on here are paid by the RFC to umpire bash. XXXXing every thread ,can these people get some real material or make a careful analysis of the games by looking at the real issues to why we lose so many close games? I can assure you based on the last 165 games it's not the umpires, but more a soft underbelly and a group void of leadership from top to bottom. Where was Jack standing in the last bounce set up? I hope not in the forward line with mates expecting to kick the winning goal? :$
I'M going to report the next post i see which involves umpiring bashing based on thread derailing tactics.:D:p

I was starting to wonder after the 5-0 start where our ceiling is, but with the last 3 weeks it seems its somewhere near the side of 2013-2015 as I thought it would be.
Either scrape into finals and maybe pinch a final if its someone we match up well on, or just miss finals altogether.

Yep
As you said, time for the umpire bashing crew to get some new material.
As I said last week in jest, some would have you believe all 420-odd losses since our 1980 flag win have been the umps' fault.
Now I'm plain starting to believe my sarcasm wasn't so cynical!

I tip my hat to any Tiger supporter that didn't see the Tigers at their best but still loves them and follows them. That is our strength. The Tiger Army. This is what makes other clubs supporters envious. If I remember correctly we have been 3rd for memberships behind the Pies and Hawks in recent years. If the Hawks go down we will surpass them leaving only the Pies who I respect for their undying loyalty. How can such an under performing club have so much support? It irks many and is the reason why many like us failing as it's more fun for them than a Tiger Army full of voice.

I'm going to throw it out there and say we cause an upset this week and all of a sudden we are back....
surely the footy gods have to go easy on us at some point

Then we follow up that awesome performance by getting smashed in the proceeding 5 rounds. #TypicalRichmond

It's easy to look at being unlucky in the past few rounds but the biggest worry has to be the stat I read, but can't find again for accuracy, that had us ranked 6th or 7th for mark and play ons in rounds 1-5 and rounds 6-8 we're 17th.

To me that represents the team going back into the shells of last year and not being courageous enough to make that quick kick forward to allow Castagna, Butler and Rioli to scramble the defense and generate dangerous attacking plays.

Instead we mark, hesitate, shuffle back, and kick over the mark trying to chip through the oppositions zone setup and then bomb it into the forward line where it hits the deck in traffic and gets rebounded back out by defensive numbers where they can launch a quick attack to cut through our numbers who have wandered too far forward to recover and setup our defense.

Even with GWS having injuries I'm very concerned about GWS's ability to be able to do this in transition and one of Cameron/Patton/Stevie J/Greene getting off the leash at different stages like the Crows forward line did in round 6 with Tex/Lynch/Betts/Cameron. If we play static and bomb the ball they'll cut us up.

Really can't afford to get flogged as the confidence for the rest of the season will start to crumble completely.
