Fixture How would you do Round 1 of the 2024 AFL Premiership Season?

Collingwood won’t play brisbane until Easter Thursday in Brisbane as they’ve done each year for the last 10.
Richmond will play Carlton as we also do each year.
We wouldn’t play Melbourne anyway as we play them Anzac eve each year.
Wish both of you would but out a plan and both be dynamite for once instead of one up one down.

Pies v cats will get a huge crowd anyway regardless if they are raising the flag or not.
You’d be better to play pies v giants first up, you’d get at least 80,000 there for a game that wouldn’t usually draw that much plus it’s a replay of the prelim.
Pies giants would be absolutely mint.

Collingwood won't play Brisbane round 1 cause Easter Thursday

CARL vs RICH will open the season like always

Collingwood should get the Friday night home match to unfurl the flag against Geelong or Sydney

Brisbane will probably play a vic team - essendon or hawthorn - to open on the sat night at the gabba

We'll get the sunday mid arvo match (probs against st kilda/crom)

Rest i have no idea

Geelong v Collingwood at the cattery thursday night. Think it's time
Richmond v Carlton Friday night
Essendon v Bulldogs sat day Marvel
GWS V Sydney Sat day
Gold Coast v Brisbane sat night
Port v Crows sat night
Eagles v Dockers Sunday
Roos v Hawks Sunday Tas
Melbourne v St Kilda Sunday MCG

You can't have a genuine conversation with that little level of self-awareness.
What's your proposal then? Not our fault everyone wants to play us for marquee games. Pretty sure the last 2 years have shown we'll win anywhere anytime

Pies in Geelong? Zero chance.

If you think the Pies have been looked after with the fixture in recent years, next year will be next level.

They'll get an overload of prime time MCG games, and won't travel much. Expect them in lots of Friday and Saturday nights.

I will be a little left of centre.

WEEK 1.

FRI March 8th Swans v Pies 19:45 (SCG)
SAT March 9th Giants v Bulldogs 19:20 (Giants Stadium)

WEEK 2.

THU March 14th Blues v Tigers 19:25 (MCG)
FRI March 15th Pies v Cats 19:50 (MCG)
SAT March 16th Bulldogs v Demons 13:45 (Marvel)
Lions v Swans 16:40 (GABBA)
Crows v Hawks 19:20 (Adelaide Oval)
Eagles v Giants 20:30 (Optus Stadium)
SUN March 17th Bombers v Port 13:10 (MCG)
Saints v Dockers 15:40 (Marvel)
Suns v Nth Melb 16:40 (Metricon)

All times EDST.

Time to move away from the word fixture. (Although it is obviously fixed)

I think the AFL is talking about getting a head start in the Harbour city in 2024.
What I have suggested above will not happen, instead Round 1 will bleed over 2 weeks (2 games week one 7 games week two) which to me makes no sense.
Lets see what happens.

How I would do it is essentially a formula. Grand finalists meet in replicated timeslot (could be later if a WA side is involved). Each team that made finals plays each other at the same level they got kicked out, losing prelim finalists start the season.
Ideally, higher on the ladder hosts but can be moved to ensure one game in each state, avoid venue conflicts etc.
Obviously the AFL would not do that, as it can result in lower viewer number teams getting prime slots. I despise the Thursday night timeslot - it limits scheduling options the following week - but am resigned to the inevitability.

Applying that with necessary adjustments gives something like :

Thu : Greater Western Sydney v Carlton [7 AUS], Showgrounds (Preliminary finalists) - probably GWS only home game in Sydney until after Gather Round, due to the Royal Easter Show
Fri : Melbourne v Port Adelaide [7 AUS], MCG (Semi finalists)
Sat : Collingwood v Brisbane [7 AUS], MCG (GF rematch, flag unfurling etc)
Sat twi : Adelaide v Essendon [7 SA], Adelaide Oval (maybe delayed a little to avoid GF rematch conflict)
Sat night : St Kilda v Sydney [7 NSW, VIC], Docklands (Elimination finalists, the only one of the finals match-ups with a shared timeslot)
Sat night : Fremantle v Richmond [7 WA], Perth Stadium
Sun early : Western Bulldogs v Geelong, Docklands
Sun : Hawthorn v North Melbourne, MCG
Sun : Gold Coast v West Coast [7 QLD, WA], Carrara

Which also gives one game in each of SA,WA,NSW,QLD.

There just is no difference to collingwood playing Geelong in geelong, as opposed to playing swans at the SCG , or playing Brisbane at the Gabba , or port at the Adelaide oval.
They can not be treated as special irrespective of their membership status.
Tigers, blues, and bombers have all played in Geelong recently.
The new stadium now has a higher capacity. It's time .
They can whinge all they want but no club is bigger than the game itself

Wish both of you would but out a plan and both be dynamite for once instead of one up one down.

I propose you dont whinge when you barely travel outside your home state, have another team move their home game to your ground, have a bunch of marquee games locked in forever as well as homr ground advantage every GF.

I don't see anyone here complaining but you

Reigning premiers have hosted in R1 since 2019 can't see why that would change now, but seems like you can't quite grasp that

Giving you a free hit rd 1! You could be sitting top after that game!
I think there’s a better chance of cindi, Linda, Naomi and Christie knocking my door tonight demanding a 5 some - and finding out my mrs organised it as an early Xmas present.

Thursday
Carlton v Richmond MCG n

Friday
Collingwood v Port Adelaide MCG n

Saturday
Adelaide v Gold Coast AO
St Kilda v Sydney MS t
Brisbane v Western Bulldogs G n
Fremantle v Melbourne OS t

Sunday
North Melb v Essendon MS
GWS v Geelong GS
Hawthorn v West Coast MCG t

Thursday- Blues vs Tigers
Friday- Pies vs Giants (two good teams and maximises the number of pies fans who can attend the flag unfurling)

Sat afternoon- North vs Sunnies (Marvel)
Sat twilight/afternoon- Dockers vs Bombers
Sat night (channel 7)- Geelong vs Brisbane (Kardinia park)
Sat night- Crows vs Port

Sunday afternoon- Saints vs dogs (Marvel)
Sunday afternoon (channel 7)- Dees vs Hawks
Sunday night/twilight- Eagles vs Swans

Four blockbuster games for channel 7 including all of the prelim final teams.

Additionally, a big showdown between the two south Australian teams with the south Australian teams expected to be at the highest standard since 2017.

I believe this is a very solid round 1. Cats-Lions and Eagles-Swans can have their home teams swapped and North can play in Tasmania if they want a game in each state.
