has any1 purchased one yet? It's exclusive through Vodafone atm, which is disappointing, I had a feel of one the other day and it's a big unit, can any1 share their opinion on this new phone?

Picked this baby up the day it came out and I'm loving it so far. My old phone was a LG Viewty which was downright crap and the DHD is a massive step up. Its not as simple as the iPhone but if you're willing to explore all of its features then its well worth getting. While it does seem quite big, you get used to it fairly quickly. It has great syncing integration with facebook/twitter if you're into those sort of things and the fact that you can cusomise the 5 or so "homepage screens" with widgets is great. I'll try to answer any other questions you have.

Really depends what you use it for and what you leave on. If you leave the 3G, auto-syncing and everything else on then it doesn't last too long. With my usage I probably go about 2 days without it getting too low, and I only use programs if I need to (admitedly the only games I have on it at the moment are Andoku and other ones that dont really drain much power). There are some tricks online that you can do to extend the battery life (which are actually endorsed by HTC as well) but I haven't gotten round to it yet as you need a whole day to do it properly. You can also adjust the display settings (such as brightness) to help with the battery. But overall it is a bit disappointing that they didn't use a battery unit with more power since it obviously has enough room for it and considering the screen size is so much bigger than your average phone.

I'm resigned to the fact that you pretty much need to charge a smartphone every day if you actually plan on using it like a smartphone.

That said, it's a lot more convenient now that phones use Micro USB as chargers - If I'm around at someone's house and need to charge my phone, if they don't have a Micro USB charger for their own phone, they'll have an external HDD that uses a Micro USB cable, so I can co-opt that.

I also have a car charger that's just a USB adapter for the cigarette lighter, so I always have a Micro USB charging cable in my car too.

This Plan.. is 1GB of internet enough for someone who would use it inbetween occassionally and often, I will use it when I'm going out/out to check FB, ask mates if they're going out etc. but probably won't use the internet much else.

I have the Desire HD and love it.

My plan includes 2GB of 3G data - I'm on my first month but I very much doubt I'll get close - while I'm at home I'm on wi-fi and while I'm at work I'm on wi-fi.

Initially I was leaving everything on (BT wi-fi GPS) and it would be giving me battery warnings by the time I finish work for the day so I have started turing things off. I plan to get a dock for my desk though (although the HTC shop doesn't have one yet) - then I can have it powered all day.

There's not really any need to have any of those things on when you're not actively using them - Things like GPS and Bluetooth in particular are massive wastes of battery.

I use the SwitchPro widget so I can control it all from the desktop - Battery Status Bar is a handy app to get an exact number for the amount of battery remaining too.

I've got the Otterbox communter. Pretty good. Never had a similar case (or owned a similar phone) so cant really give a proper review but its what I want. Hard plastic outer, rubber inner (presumably to absorb shock) and not bulky at all. Also adapted the case well so that you can 'unplug' the usb port and other holes if you want to use them. Cost $35 from US

Depends what you want. From my POV, if you want to stop scratches and drops of water then the silicone one would be fine (my dad as one). The otterbox one I have is probably better if you drop it and also if you spill your drink and phone is on table (been there done that).

can any1 give any advice as to where to buy this phone outright? I don't want to go with Vodafone on a 24mth contract

Has any1 bought the HTC desire HD outright?

You can get it from here if you're happy to order from overseas: http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/3564/htc-desire-hd--android--sim-free-unlocked--dark-brown-

Or here if you'd prefer to order from an Australian site: http://www.mobicity.com.au/htc-desire-hd.html

I can't tell you anything about either site, because I haven't used them.

Also, Vodafone offer 12 month contracts - You can get the Desire HD from them on a 12 month $69 contract for a total minimum cost of $1008, which if you factor in the cost of the handset being about $700, comes to about $25 a month for $700 credit and a 2GB of data, presuming that you're going to be paying for credit anyway.

However, you then have to be with Vodafone, which may or may not put you off. Also, they're out of stock.

You have your options though.

I bought one a few weeks back for 900 or so outright(from mobicity.com.au). Really happy with it. The only thing i'm critical of is the battery life. Other than that, outstanding phone. Using it with a boost prepaid sim.

I recommend the otterbox commuter case for it.

Picking mine up on Sat from allphones, can't wait, 99% of the reviews I read about this phone pretty much say it's faultless apart from the battery life, but ey, what phones actually have decent battery lives these days

Any recommendation in how to get better battery life?
I have a Galaxy S, but I use the SwitchPro widget to quickly and easily turn any settings when I'm not using them, like WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS etc.

Not having those things running unnecessarily all the time will save your battery - You can even switch off 3G if you're not using it to save plenty of battery.

AdvancedTaskKiller kills off any programs that are running in the background without you realising, but some people have suggested that the resources it uses running all the time essentially equals the likelihood of you leaving something running in the background in the first place. I find that I'm pretty good at managing my apps with the task manager, so I don't bother.

I use Battery Status Bar to give me a more accurate representation of where the battery level is at as well. The default status bar battery level indicator (at least in the Galaxy S) is wildly inaccurate - It still shows that you have half battery left when you're down to 34%, so while you might think that the battery has plenty of charge, it could be run down a lot further than you think.

Battery Status Bar won't actually help extend battery life (in fact, it will use a little bit of juice, given that it is a running function), but it manages your expectations because you always know exactly where you stand with regards to charge remaining. It also lets you get an idea of how much battery you use up when you do certain things, as you can see that it went from X% to Y% while you were doing it.

Ok, so I bought this phone outright from Allphones and absolutely love it, it's a sick phone

However, I can't seem to get HTC sync to work? I downloaded the HTC sync software on the website and when I connected my usb cable from the phone to comp, HTC Sync doesn't pick up my phone, has any1 else had the same problem?

It's really frustrating me as I want to put some files from my phone onto the pc and vice versa

More than likely going to get the phone on the 3 $29 Cap with 200mb data now this is kinda like my post earlier, I will use Facebook when I go out and download the occassional app, visit sites sometimes, will it be enough?

You can get infinite Facebook usage on a lot of caps, not sure if it applies to 3's plans though. I think 200mb would be enough based on what you have described, but it's hard to say really.

Does anyone know if this phone is coming to Optus any time soon? My current contract runs out in July and I'm already hoping to get a hold of the Desire HD for my next plan. Do Telstra have it yet?

I really don't want to switch over to Vodafone, for obvious reasons!

By July there'll probably be a better phone on the market, and you'll want that more.

I wouldn't start worrying about that yet. I wanted to get the original Desire when I got my newest phone back in September, but then the Samsung Galaxy S came out right when I was looking for my new phone, so I ended up getting that instead.
