Now why does'nt that surprise me , Not the first time Ive heard this stupid approach, Gourdis walks into Punt Rd as a Top foward in junior ranks, what do we do, send him down back...Makes about as much sense as teaching Roger Federer to be a table tennis player. Get with the program Tiges:eek:

totally agree , gourdis looked amazing in his highlight reel as a foward.
ffs just let the kid go and do some of the amazing things at coburg seniors
why must we constantly try and reinvent the wheel

It does actually NQT.

Shows that at the time he said that (which was likely at least last year if not further back) he was concerned about the ability of Moore, McGuane, Schulz and Polak to fill KP defensive posts. Fortunately, Moore has improved out of sight, McGuane is plodding along ok, Schulz has shown way more in defense than ever before, and even Polak is coming along quite well.

Additionally, playing Hughes out of his comfort zone (in defense in the magoos) and being harsh on him when he gets an attitude or ahead of himself, seems to have done him the world of good wouldn't you say?

He still has a long way to go before he earns Wallace's full respect (he got a curt pat on the back for his effort on Saturday, while Richo, Deledio and others got a full blown embrace) and there's obviously a lot of reasons behind that. This interview again reveals Hughes' mindset - 'I know better.'

Wrong.

No big heads, no show boats, no 'I'm bigger than this team and I know more' bullshit. Respect and obey the coaching staff no matter what they ask of you, play for the team, or ____ off.

I have absolutely no problem with Wallace acting like that, it's part of changing the culture which damn near brought this club to its knees.

The days of individuals thinking they are bigger than the club or can hold it to ransom in any way, shape or form, are finally over, and I for one couldn't be happier.

I listened to that interview and did not think he was being a smarta__e at all.
He was very level headed and very self confident, but you should not mistake a bit of confidence for being a non conformer or a smarta__e

Hang on a second champ... just because they were talented as a forward as a junior, does not mean that a club does not and should not mould the player to their needs.

Remember Presti fromt he Pies was a GUN forward as a junior. As a full back, he has been excellent value for the Pies and was a disgrace when tried as a forward when he first arrived at Victoria Park.

I'm amazed at how so many of you are not working with AFL clubs as we speak, considering the wealth of knowledge and expertise you all have.

SPOT ON WALLY:thumbsu:, not to mention Mick Martyn kicked 100 goals at Nth's under 19's and then played full back for the rest of he's career,2 Premierships,2 B&F's the rest is history.

Mick Martyn was drafted as a full forward, Steve Silvagni kicked a few bags in his early years, but yeah, you guys are right - should let a kid play wherever he wants to.

Which part of...

Wallace wanted him to be a defender.......he told teflon that he was a forward.
...doesn't sound like he thinks he knows better than the coach?

How do you think a bloke like Wallace, who would have crawled over broken glass to play league football - and metaphorically did many times after 'making it' - would react to a kid telling him where he should play?

How does it sound when that kid plays his first breakout game, then goes on the radio and comments to the effect of 'see, I knew better' in the senior coach's direction?

It's common knowledge Hughes slipped in the draft because of his attitude, not his ability. We've clearly taken steps to rectify that attitude, Cleve himself no doubt has too, but probably both parties have a way to go yet.

I was merely defending Wallace's handling of him, even the Wallace haters should be able to see that it's far preferable to knock a cocky kid with no score on the board at senior level down a few pegs than allow them waste their talent by continually bringing a poor attitude to the table.

There's no better example than Wallace's handling of Nathan Brown at the Dogs. Nobody would touch Brown in the draft because of his attitude. Wallace was pivotal in helping him to realise his potential, and hopefully Hughes turns out to be a very similar story.

Apologies HH if that is the case - the rest of you are stupid :p

I'm on the angry pills today. :thumbsu:

You're forgiven Wally. I couldn't be bothered with the long, well thought out response, so went short and sarcastic. Maybe not very clear though.

I imagine a lot of those thinking Wallace should play Cleve where Cleve wants to play, have all had a go at TW for not playing Schulz in defence earlier.

And what about taking lifelong forward Richo out of the goals?

Let's face it, Terry destroyed the environment, stuffed up the MYKI system, sent a tornado through the Phillipines, and broke the front quarter window on my ute.

Bastard.

players need to play in a variety of positions but they should play them where they can get the best out of them., not try to mess them up.

Nothing wrong with playing a forward in defence to teach him defensive accountability and what defenders need to do to block a forwards leads. It's all part of the learning process.
