FORMER St Kilda midfield coach Mick McGuane has backed Collingwood's prized recruit Luke Ball before Friday's night's blockbuster grudge match against the Saints.

"Knowing Luke Ball the person, what he stands for and the pride that he's got, it's too early to write him off," McGuane declared yesterday.

I reckon he could have a big game against his old club this week.

Pressure has worn of playing against his old club because of our nab cup ecounter. (hopefully anyway)

saints will probaly try and tag swan and pendles but with bally's experience about them, how they work and such, could help bring us over the line against them.

him and o'bree are important factors for us friday night if we want to win the clearances which we struggled badly last week.

Mick who? He must have been interviewed in a pub somewhere.

Unless he's injured, there is no way that Luke Ball wont be playing against St. Kilda. If you dropped him, you may as well tell him to stay in the VFL for the rest of the season because it would be basically saying that you have no belief in him at all..

The people who are bagging Ball - except for the so-called magpie supporters in forums - are media people looking for a headline. Stuff em..

I've got a feeling Ross Lyon will try and take Ball out of the game, knowing that he is damaging under the packs and to ensure that our steal from them does not play well. Sounds petty I know but that's Ross Lyon's middle name..

If Ross Lyon is as petty as I think he is, look for Clinton Jones on Luke Ball.

Agree I think he put Baker on to him to make him feel Pain

There is only one CLINT Jones in their team, he can't tag everyone. So everyone else should run amok.

Is that an adjective before the words Jones????Nice Work:thumbsu:

Anyway, Ross Lyon wouldn't tag Luke Ball, it would be against his views on him, that would mean he thinks he's our best mid...would be interesting though if he started well whether Jones would go to him, and therefore free up more damaging mids...

I think it will be like the NAB cup Game. An attacking player will go to Ball. Lyon will back the Saint's player to do more damage. It has been years since anyone tagged Ball.

Schneider started on Ball in that game and had two goals to quarter time and had set another up while Ball was wasting his possessions.

Joey, Hayes, Dal etc Armo stood him along with Schneider in the NAB, but I think Lyon will seek to exploit Ball with his better players. Joey would not surprise as his inside work has greatly improved and his pace would leave Ball foundering.

Ball will be let free as the Saints will not mind if he becomes the go-to player as his kicking does not hurt.

If Malthouse lets Ball play wide of Lenny or Dal, then I don't imagine that Lyon will mind one iota.

This will bump up Ball's possession tally which will impress the stats watchers and those with him in their Dreamteams. So KSS will think he has played a good game.

Clint will go to a player that Lyon wants to stop. Swan or Didak.
Baker will go to another.

Jolly is the player out of form that the Pie's most need to fire, and who could have the biggest influence on the game.. Probably Cloke after that.

I doubt Jones would go to Ball under any circumstances, he stayed on Harvey last week even though Rawlings was picking up big numbers - though they won by 100 so it made no difference. Ball though isn't the damaging style of player that teams would generally choose to tag.

Agreed. In order I see Jones tagging one of:
1. Didak (because of previous success tagging).
2. Pendles (because of his damaging ball use).
3. Swan.

Ball ;)

Will be interesting to see the other tags employed by Ross besides CJ.

Other than CJ Baker will hard tag Davis or didak (if CJ doesn't go to him of course), other than that I can't see Lyon employing any other hard tags. Saints midfield is so strong it can back itself to go one on one and win against pretty much every team. Unless one of our players is killing it and the game is close I can't see St kilda changing from this mindset.
