I noticed that about Adelaide as well... their taxi drivers were all Anglo-Saxon. I wonder if that's simply because Adelaide doesn't generally get the migration that Melbourne and Sydney do?

People that can't get a job as anything else??? I don't know evade... Lets ask Freddy how he got into taxi driving...

How did you get into taxi driving and what attracted you Fred?

I dunno, but usually I'm amazed if the cabbie is actually who he says he is and not a brother/cousin/other form of relative

for those who are catching taxi in melbourne, a lot of drivers nowadays likes to press that "extra charge" button on the meter so you have pay an extra $1.10, that "extra charge" should only incur when you have booked a taxi or u are riding the taxi after midnight. But A LOT of them press that button no matter what, they are a bunch of bastards!!

A friend at works husband used to be a Taxi driver and he loved it (is Afghan - he hates Al-q and Muj and cheered on the US of A). The amount of money he earned over a weekend was quite staggering actually! That'spartly why he did it BUT guess what the ther reason was.....

to help improve his english! :p :D

He lost his license for 6 mnths "drink driving" dweeb!

He is now foreman at a construction company so won't be going back to the old trade.

And you're the sort that cabbies hate in return. You get in, abuse everyone, throw up all over yourself and then stagger off without paying the fare. Then you can't understand why you have to walk next time as nobody wants you.

It stays. It's a good example of a pre-school tantrum and what happens when mental and physical development get out of sync.

Anyone want to own up that he's one of theirs?

Not really. The problem is that they are late because of picking up all the ppl who are waiting at the bus stops.

Some of the bus drivers do go past and fail to stop. Which makes me mad

I've never had any problems with cabbies. They know most of the major roads, and friendly. Sure, some of them have poor english, but so what? Do you pay them to drive you home, or give you a lecture on Shakespearean literature?

Bus drivers on the other hand... ever heard of showers?

cabbies are generally a good bunch just ask david nietz.:D

it amazes me about how many of them listen to niel mitchell and derryn hinch, must be something to do with that learning english bit,

beware of the sunday cabby he is usually filling in for the weekday cabbie, and may or may not have his licence and definitely has no sense of direction. e,g.(they do not know where the cbd is)

i rely on cabs due to medical reasons, i just wish that they would wash.

I've had a fairly good run with cabbies, If they're nice and don't have a bad attitude they're alright.

Had a cabbie called Surender once, I think he just came to the country or something, hardly spoke english, didnt charge us for the fare and went through the bottle shop and bought us alcohol. haha

hey get hip to the guru beat dude

I have had very little trouble with cabbies (although I did have one that came on to me!). In general, most of them are pretty good - remember they do have to display their licence and all cabs have a unique identification number. If your unhappy with the service, ring the company.

BTW, I've had a couple of great ones lately who have been Hawthorn supporters who have picked me up after Hawthorn wins. They actually gave me a discount. I've even had one cabby give me a can of VB after someone gave it to him as tip.

Catch taxis pretty often cause I don't drive. Normally always have a good experience, about 60% are new to this wide brown land but there's plenty of ocker cabbies too. They're usually all good for a chat if you're interested. They definitely have no problem finding places, most know my street no matter where I've picked the taxi up (though its true I think most live on my street!).

The ones who are new the the country are the most interesting because you can really learn interesting stuff if you question them in an interested, curious manner. That struff about the kite flying with the glass powder slitting peoples throats ... learnt that off an indian cabbie.

The only gripe I have is that there's a fair proportion who right hurtle.

You get paid whether you're flat out or just sitting on your arse. Cabbies only get paid when there's a fare on board, hence the hurtling.
