Which is the more efficient program, ICQ or MSN? Which one works best on your computer in terms of speed/realibility/effectiveness/chat/file transfer? Which program has the least/most errors, and which one is the best to use on the internet when you have nothing else better to do? Why is the one program better than the other?

Discuss.

PS. Glad to see BigFooty is up and running again. Oh, and thanks Mags for suggesting Morpheus, it's doing a fantastic job... now I can play Master of Orion II :)

Well they both gave their own advantages and disadvantages. Okay ... but occassionally when i am not in the mood to chat and my computer logs into both on startup ... i can't login on invisible (appear offline) mode on msn. whilst on ICQ, i can stay invisible.

I say this because i do have a habit of turning my computer on and going away to do something else. a lot of the time, i can't be bothered chatting. in the end ... it only matter "who" i'm chattin to :)

after running icq for three years and msn for one...I'd have to say that I definately prefer ICQ. I can hide from people I don't want to see, people need my authorization to add me, it doesn't crash my computer and its much easier to access people's details and locate people.
Sadly my file transfer doesn't work all that well but in the days of email hey, who cares? :D

i prefer icq to msn,for some of the same reasons stated above by topdon, namely being able to log on invisible. plus its easier to log on to as is not the case a lot of the time with msn during the afternoon sometimes.
plus,i have more people on my icq and hardly anyone on msn:(

Had ICQ, and ended up deleting it. Absolute trash compared to the MSN messenger service.

The Hitman

ICQ for everything. But I like MSN just too quickly send msgs.... And If I cant get on ICQ I swear at it (thanks LME :) ) and it works. Unlike MSN which is always down.

Mags

ICQ by a bloody mile.
Both programs have thier advantages and disadvantages, but ICQ has a lot more advantages than disadvantages.

ICQ is much easier to use, better for chat, better to look up peoples details and do a search for people with similar interests, but two major points why its better:

- you can log in offline. You can open the program and use some options without being on the internet. Like you can delete people, sort out your list, fix up the visible/invisible lists etc - all that you can do while not connected to the net.
You cant do this with MSN...you have to be connected to the internet to even view your list.

- ICQ DOESNT GO DOWN FOR A DAY EVERY TWO WEEKS LIKE MSN DOES. Which is a major pain in the butt.

Well I'm more likely to log onto the program where I can talk to the person I particularly want to talk to. (and he's on icq)

However, that aside, I prefer icq. I like being able to send messages to people when their offline. I like being able to be invisible to some people, but still have a conversation with one or two people. I like being able to log on as invisible. I like having the history of a conversation from when I first began to talk to the person, and so that I can re read, or check up on something. And I like the format - not having to keep a window open the entire time to keep the conversation.

Don't get me wrong, I like msn, but icq is soooo much better

ICQ was the first chat proggy I was introduced to...

I only got MSN recently...

but I think because I have used ICQ for so long now I know most of the things it can/will do...

each to there own...

MSN is better for me, although it does shut down for "maintenance" too often these days. It doesn't bother me that much anymore, because I rarely log in anymore - I'm not the internet junkie I used to be a few months ago.

ICQ has a habit of freezing up my computer, so I don't bother with it for chat at all, but log in every month or two to see if anyone has left messages or added me.

I have both but only use MSN, not for any particular reason, tho. I guess most of my friends use it as well and not many use ICQ.

well ..

... the best bet is to have both ... and how?

www.trillian.cc is a great program, can log on, via the same client, to ICQ/MSN/Yahoo messenger/AIM, all at the same time - don't need multiple annoying chat programs open!

Makes life alot easier, and needs only one program to chat to every other client - gets the big thumbs up from yours truly.

ICQ for me. been using it for years and have a massive contact list. Also much easier to chat to multiple people at the one time (using the single message mode). try that with MSN and you end up with 10 bloody windows open everywhere.

MSN is better by an absolute mile. I used ICQ when I was younger (and when I used to use the net heaps). However now that I don't use the net so much...I use MSN, it is heaps easier to email friends though hotmail and that sort of thing. And you don't have to login to the hotmail website to see if you actually have email. Its really good, plus a few of my friends use it.

MSN by miles!!!!!!! ICQ is ok, but I found it too confusing and yeah, I dunno, didn't like it. Only one thing sucks, the Beatlettes chat on ICQ..........get msn you bitches!!!!!!!! ;) LOL

I have both, but rarely use icq anymore. I find it attracts weird stalker types who bombard you with scary messages. I'm always invisible now.
