....played for glenelg, would the crows have right of way in drafting him under FS rules as he is playing for glenelg, a crows aligned club?

clarification please!

No because his father played for Port Adelaide. It's the club the father played for that determines eligibility. So Peter Motley, for example, would have been eligible for the Power even though he was playing for Sturt.

understood, but glenelg is aligned to the crows, - whater the fck that means - so in this instance, the club alignment rule goes out of the window?

ok.

i still think its a joke that the crows think that getting bryce gibbs via FS rule is just about a lay down misere just because ross played for glenelg - the crows should have to wait around a bit until a few of there own players have been breeding.

If that's the case...then Port should either only be able to recruit from the Magpies, or must wait until their own player breeding kicks into gear.

The alignment only relates to the father's club. Funny thing is, under the original allocation, Glenelg were aligned to Port and it was the public scrutiny of the Gibbs example ("There is no way my sons will play for Port Adelaide") and I'd imagine behind the scenes manoueverings from Glenelg that changed it. Mind u Glenelg are quick to snaffle Power players in the SANFL mini draft ... :rolleyes:

I wrote the following on the Adelaide Board about the father son rule a couple of weeks ago.

From the AFL 2005 book page 334;

Until October 31, 2010, Adelaide may include a player on its primary list if that player's father played 200 or more senior grade matches at one of the following clubs from 1970 to 1990: Norwood, Glenelg, Strurt, South Adelaide.

Until October 31, 2017, Port Adelaide may include a player on its primary list if that player's father played 200 or more senior grade matches at one of the following clubs from 1977 to 1997: Port Magpies, Woodville, West Torrens, North Adelaide, Central Districts or West Adelaide.

Some interesting points on the above;

1. Adelaide get 20 seasons (1991-2010) to recruite from SANFL fathers and Port get 21 seasons (1997-2017). Unless there is an error in the above 2 paragraphs. The rules under WCE and Freo section are for 21 seasons.

2. What happens for example if a father players 120 games for Norwood before the Crows entered AFL and 80 or more games for them after 1990, will the Crows be denied the opportunity to draft the son?? I think so.

3. If a player starts his SANFL career after 1990 and plays 200 or more SANFL games, has never made an AFL list, the games are considered irrelevant for the father son rule. Makes some sense but it's a bit harsh.

4. I have an official SANFL book published in 1977 after the centenary season. It shows Russell Ebert had played 222 by season end and 24 games in 1977, making a total of 198 games at the end of 1976. Russell played 392 games for Port so if the cut of rule was after the 1977 season not before it, Brett would not have qualifed under the father son rule. How bizare would that have been.

5. The SANFL for many years, not sure about these days, counted preseason competion/ night games, like the Escort cup and Foundation cup as official games for player total games. An example from the book I mentioned in pt 4. shows Rex Voight and D Holst played 27 games in 1977. Glenelg played 22 + 4 finals games.

SINCE I POSTED THIS I HAVE WORKED OUT THAT TECHNICALLY BRETT EBERT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ELIGIBLE UNDER THE ABOVE FATHER SON RULE.
Russell played 392-198 =194 games for Port between 1977 and 1997.

Since Port entered the AFL the Father Son rule has been amended in 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2003 (the above rule). Brett was drafted in November 2002. I'm not sure how the 2002 rule are different to 2003 rule.

Martin Leslie Junior would be subject to the following F/S rules.

1. Can go to Brisbane as dad played 107 games for Brisbane. Need 100 games for an AFL club to qualify.

2. I am 99.9% certain Matin didn't play 200 games for Port in SANFL therefore, junior can't qualify to play for Port under F/S rule.

3. Martin didn't play 200 games for any of the clubs aligned to Crows therefore, junior can't qualify under F/S rule.

weve been breeding for over 130 years.

You sure have, but the other clubs that you are elligible to get players from have had nothing to do with Port Adelaide ie; Centrals. So, by your reckoning, Port should not get player under the father/son rule from those clubs?

If we could have sons of 100 gamers for PAFC without stupid additional restrictions, I think we'd be quite happy with that.

Confirming Leslie Junior F/S rule position with Port;

Martin Leslie 150 games for PAFC 1977 - 1997 no F/S advantage

Some other Port champions who's boys (if they have any) are not guarantted to play for Port if good enough because of 200 SANFL games v 100 VFL/AFL qualification differential.

Scot Hodges 183 games
Bruce Abbernethy 192 games
Peter Woite 182 games
Bomber Clifford 162 games
Greg Anderson 148 games

The SANFL used to (maybe still does) count State games among totals. So according to a 1989 year book I checked Russell was listed at 421 games - 392 for Port and 29 State games. I'd imagine State games were counted because they often meant a player missed a SANFL game which would count towards the total games record.
