This is my first ever post on Big Footy guys so go easy!

I've been thinking about this for a while and I continually come to the same conclusion - and that is that we do have the talent but we're not utilising what have in a way which will give us the consistency we all long for. We all have opinions on how we should line up and here are my thoughts:

1. Lewis is not a small forward. Thinking back to when he was a permanent midfielder, I remember he had a great ability to find space and hit up targets with time and space. Back to the midfield my friend! However we do need small/crumbing forwards which i'll get to in my line up.

2. This seems to have been hotly debated but Roughead to CHB. I understand peoples reservations about pace but we're not struggling with the ball that hits forwards on a lead, we struggle with the contested one on one situations (or 3 on 1, doesnt seem to make a differnce!) when the ball comes in high and long. Roughead has the confidence and strength to take contested defensive marks or at least spoil.

3. I also think we lack a lead up target playing a high half foward role. Although the high press that teams put on decreases this need slightly, we still need a target long when coming off the half back line - Enter Shoenmakers.

In order for this re-shuffle to work and along with some other tweaks, this is how i would line up my team:

B: Puopolo - Gilham - Gibson
HB: Birchall - Roughead - Suckling
C: Savage - Hodge - Young
HF: Shoe - Franklin - Burgoyne
F: Bruest - Lisle - Rioli
Foll: Hale - Mitchel - Lewis

Int: Guerra, Shiels, Smith
Sub: ??

So if Kennet gave you a call and asked you to take over, what would you do?

Re: If you were coach for day....

I would start with playing players in their right position. This means playing where they are most effective and valuable.

Starting with:

FB: Gilham Roughead Puopolo
HB: Suckling Gibson Birchall
C: Savage Mitchell Young
HF: Rioli Schoenmakers Burgoyne
FF: Osborne Franklin Lisle
Rucks: Bailey Sewell Hodge
Int: Lewis Bateman Shiels
Sub: Smith

Have Bailey and Lisle alternative in the ruck.

For a guy thats over 196 cm its astonishing why he cant do a bit of ruckwork.

Re: If you were coach for day....

Well if i was coach for the Day I would rectify our forward line first and foremost......this is the oppositions springboard for attack.
Plenty of pace defensive pressure and a specialist forward.....both forward pockets inside 50 at all times, this makes the opposition defenders accountable rather than double and tripple teaming Franklin and Roughead...also once the ball hits the ground we can apply instant pressure to the defenders clearing the ball.
The 2 half forwards pushing up the ground as link men then hitting the inside 50 hard.

Forwards

FP. Pup (defensive forward)- Roughead - Breust/Osbourne(specialist goal sneak)
HF. Rioli - Franklin - Bateman

Midfield Rotations consisting of Mitchell, Sewell, Burgoyne, Hodge, Shiels, Lewis

Backline. A true KP backman with height, Shoenmachers, is our only KPP that has all the right attributes to make it as a defender - speed agility, good tank, solid upper body.

We also need some pace in the back pocket. Whitecross is made for this role.

This would be my full line up.

BP. Whitecross - Gibson - Gilham
HB. Hodge - Shoey - Suckling
C. Young - Mitchell - Savage
HF Rioli - Roughead - Bateman
F Breust/Ossie - Franklin - Pup.

R Hale
RR. Sewell
R. Burgoyne.

Interchange Lewis Birchall Shiels
Sub. I have no idea.

Re: If you were coach for day....

If I was coach for a day I would probably resign after 1 or 2 hours because I would generally have no idea how to actually coach elite athletes and then probably throw my hands up in the air because I put Roughie back against Collingwood and he has 4 kicked on him in the first quarter. I have then officially run out of ideas. I could however just coach from the confines of the Big Footy Hawthorn forum where I could lead us to the next 4 premierships without a single loss during the regular season. It would be a lot easier that way :D i jest people, we are all keyboard warriors!

Re: If you were coach for day....

I'd start playing the team we need to be playing on GF day, to win the flag.

At the moment, for mine we are playing a team that is more likely to get us there, but won't win us a GF as there are too many gaps.

Hence, my preferred line up, would be:

FB: Puopolo - Schoenmakers - Gilham
HB: Birchall - Gibson - Hodge
Ce: Young - Mitchell - Bateman
HF: Savage - Franklin - Burgoyne
FF: Bruest - Roughead - Osborne

Ru: Bailey
RR: Sewell
Ro: Rioli

I/C: Hale, Lewis, Shiels + Guerra

First of all, welcome. Great first up post.

1. Agreed, Lewis is a midfielder.
2. Disagree. Roughead is a forward (full forward)
3. Not sure about Shoey but think the spot for him at the moment is CHB, although he gets lost sometimes & his decision making in the back half can hurt us on the turnover.

Your team is missing Sewell, Bateman, Osborne, Ladson, Bailey, Renouf. Lots of big names there but team looks good on paper.

I have been critical of Sewell recently but think he has been one of our better midfielders this year.

My Team would be :-

B - Puopolo - Gilham - Guerra
HB - Suckling - Gibson - Birchall
C - Savage - Hodge - Bateman
HF - Rioli - Franklin - Burgoyne
F - Osborne - Roughead - Bruest

Foll - Bailey - Sewell - Mitchell

Bench - Lewis, Hale, Shiels
Sub - Young

Emerg - Smith , Renouf, Lisle

Haven't been a big wrap for guys like Ladson or Whitecross. Hope they prove me wrong.

Re: If you were coach for day....

If i was coach for a day i would show the team a dvd of the 1989 and 2008 GF and show them the ultra sounds of Dermie and Dipper and Hodgies injuries that they suffered before and during the game and tell them thats what it takes to the wear the BROWN and GOLD and that is what it takes to beat the BEST!!!

Re: If you were coach for day....

My Team will be

B: Puopolo Gibson Guerra
HB: Savage Gilham Suckling
C: Sewell Hodge Shiels
HF: Lisle Franklin Burgoyne
F: Bruest Roughead Rioli
Foll: Bailey Mitchell Lewis

Int: Tom Schneide,r Isaac Smith, Hale . Sub Bateman

Re: If you were coach for day....

I'm interested also to see what roughy would bring down back, but he seems to be kicking straighter this year and looked decent against the cats.
we really need schoenmakers, milne or lisle down back here is a team i woud like to see take to field soon.

FB: Guerra, Gilham, Gibson
HB: Hodge, Schoenmakers, Ladson
C: Young, Sewell, Birchall
HF: Savage, Franklin, Suckling
FF: Bateman, Roughead, Osbourne
FOLL: Renouf, Mitchell, Burgoyne
INT: Sewell, Lewis, Hale
SUB: Shiels/Osbourne

I would love to see Suckling off half forward. he has an awesome kick. I have moved Birchall up the ground. Hodge to reassure the backline, Schoey in for a big bodied defender, Ladson/Puopolo and Guerra as the hardmen small defenders. Savage has looked good infront of goal this year - 4 zip with 3 from around 45m on the run. Shiels would be a good sub brings a bit of run and energy to the team, has shown he has more impact than ellis. Lewis & Sewell to run through the midfield and give Sir Mitchell and Burgers a rest.

Re: If you were coach for day....

Congratulations and keep them coming.

I think that more than rearranging the deck chairs is required.

If Kennett rang me I would say have you gone stark raving mad.

Re: If you were coach for day....

In an ideal situation

B: Gibson Gilham Pup
HB: Birchall Shoey Suckling

C: Young Mitchell Savage

HF: Rioli Franklin Burgoyne
FF: Osbourne Roughead Breust

FOLL: Renouf Sewell Hodge
INT: Shiels Lewis Hale SUB: Milne

Suckling/Goo is interchangeable at the moment, but I'd rather reward Suckling on the basis of his huge improvement and his form, as well as the fact that our kids need more experience.

Ozzie In. Need his angry attitude in the team, lots of forward pressure and he's pretty good overhead to boot, which is something we need. Breust has been knocking on the door for a while, and kicked 5 goals last week and looks to have fixed his defencive defficiencies so give him a go! Good Crumbing forward type that we desperately need.

Savage and Young running the lines. Lots of pace and both have brilliant 55m+ kicks. Savage's goal kicking has been brilliant, and I'd like him to have more shots. If youngy can start to wind down before he kicks for goal he can be a real weapon.

Hopefully Franklin starts leading instead of going man on man! Play to your strengths Buddy! Not your weaknesses!

Milne as the sub. Both versatile. Milne has been playing in the midfield lately, and is racking touches and kicking goals. Tall and has some speed, so he can definately be that impact player. Can go Half forward and be the third tall target. Can go run on the wing and we might win a marking contest in the midfield for the first time! :p

Still got Bailey, Stratton, Smith, WX and Lisle to come in! Not to mention Laddo, Goo, Bateman for extra depth.

Also tell Hodge, Mitch to start breeding them kids. The quicker we can get Buddy and Rioli on board the better! :p Wouldn't mind some juicy Father and Son prospects!

First thing I would do is promote Schoe and Lisle from Box Hill and play them where the club needs them to become a contender again full back and CHB and also a small defender like Puopolo to replace Ladson on a back flank.

Week after week Schoe and Lisle play forward at Box Hill kicking bags of 4 and winning games but where does that leave the HFC, up shite creek thats where.

B: Gibson Lisle Gilham
HB: Puopolo Schoenmakers Suckling
C: Birchall Burgoyne Young
HF: Riolli Franklin Ellis
F: Hale Roughead Savage
Ruck: Renouf/Bailey Sewell Hodge
Inter: Mitchell Lewis Shiels
Possible subs: Milne, Smith, Guerra

I would rotate Mitchell and Sewell through the midfield, Lewis and Hodge, Burgoyne and Riolli, and Shiels with the two wingman Birchall and Young.
At the moment is looks like Mitchell and Sewell spend large amounts of time in the middle then tire and we get over run. Both are identical players that are good clearance players but not elite in pace or kicking, for mine we should only have one of these players in the centre square at any time.

Bruce and Bateman to go to Box Hill and put a case for senior selection, not just get a game on reputation. I know Bateman kicked a few goals last week but his form has been terrible. Both need to start hitting targets and what better way than practice at Box Hill where there errors don't kill the HFC.

Once Lisle and Schoenmakers get established Gilham could be squeezed out for a Milne or Whitecross type of player. Backline could be further bolstered when under the pump by dropping Hodge back and Shiels going into the centre square.

Re: If you were coach for day....

I posted some of this in another thread, but fits better here.

I'm very much in picking players that are suitable for roles first, rather than picking best 22 players and then arranging the deck chairs.

Below is the sort of side I'd like to see us try.

Tall defenders: Shoe
3rd talls: Gilham, Gibson
Small defenders: Pup (also can play forward)
HBF: Rioli (rotating into mid), Suckling

Ruck: Renouf/Hale/Bailey (one of)

Inside mids: Mitch, Sewell, Burgoyne
Midfield Runners: Shiels, Savage, Young, Smith, Buddy

Key Forwards: Rough (and 2nd ruck), Lisle
Crumbers: Breust
Half-fowards: Bateman

Utilities: Hodge (back/mid), Milne (bk/fwd/mid), WX (bk/fwd/mid)

Which roughly translates to (doesn't quite work in the standard layout)

Gibson Gilham Suckling
Rioli Shoe Hodge
Young Burgoyne Buddy
Bateman Rough Savage
Breust Lisle WX

Renouf Mitch Sewell

Int & Sub: Smith, Pup, Milne, Shiels

We aren't getting anything out of playing two rucks at present and roughy seems to get into the game more when played as a 2nd ruck.

Its worked for freo (pavlich, mundy) so why don't we try buddy as a midfielder (rotating up fwd) for a solid 6 week stretch? We lack height and presence through the middle and he's struggling being played as a deep forward. Will still kick 3-4+ goals a week as a midfielder - not sure any team would let him freewheel so thats a tagger that is now not going to mitch/burgs/young etc etc.

Would need an extra tall up forward is buddy up the ground and roughy rotating in ruck - so room for lisle in team. Shoe down back (when fit) as we desperately need extra height down there.

Rioli was electric off a hbf during the nab cup - would give us some elite talent down back which we are missing at ground level. Run from buddy would make up for loss of rioli in middle.

We play too many similar inside mids - burg, mitch, sewell get the gig with lewis, hodge, ellis etc needing to find a role elsewhere. Don't want to ever see mitch on a hbf, sewell on a wing or burg spending a game up forward - these guys should spend most of their time as ball-winners. Have hodge, rioli, shiels, savage, bateman, breust, smith, milne, WX etc to rotate through which should be plenty of depth.

May be a little short down back with pup, rioli and suckling as the smalls but have milne, WX and hodge as utilities to rotate through (and rioli can be rotated into fwd/mid and pup into fwd) so should be able to cover all matchups.

Yes side is young but has the structure and talent to get us where we need to be.

I'd love to give you an intelligent, well thought out response as to why i've left Sewell out but unfortunately the truth is that i forgot about him! (sorry Brad....won't happen again).

Fortunately my other changes have some thought behind them...

- As much as i'd love Shoe to become that kpd we're after (not saying he won't get there) i just think Roughy has the ability, strength and composure that isn't there yet with our other prospects. I also think Roughy goes missing too often when left in our forward line.
- Lisle into my forwardline to replace Roughy and give us that marking ability. Also a great kick for goal from what i've seen.
- Quite a few have Buddy playing deep but i think playing him along with Shoe as half forwards not only gives us options coming off our backline but would also expose most kpd's who aren't used to being pulled too far out of their defensive 50 and would therefore make our boys very hard to match up on. This give Buddy the freedom to move around and hopefully prevent him from getting frustrated and giving away free's when isolated deep with 2 defenders hanging off him.

Re: If you were coach for day....

1. Id start by doing away with all the short kicks, they have there time and place, but if theyres better option on longer we must take it.

2. Dont know why we always bomb the ball in to our forward 50 (last qtr heavy wet ball fair enough) We have the midfeild and forwards so id be telling them i want chest pass's... ALA Platten to Dunstall type.

3. Id be placing a small nippy goal kick (I think Rioli belongs here, not physical able to do long 4qtr stints in the mid yet, his body desnt allow it) So Rioli a forward with stints as a rover.

4. Id be looking for a defender now Stratton has gone for the year Shoey and Litherland is the two id be pushing, They dont have to win their position, Simply break even by contesting the contest bring the ball to ground and laying tackling assisting our smalls.

5. Lewis, hodge, mitchell, sewell is our midfeild - Whos rotated with Savage and Sheils. Renouf needs a bigger tank, so next pre seasons this needs to happen.

Re: If you were coach for day....

FB: Guerra, Gilham, Gibson
HB: Birchall, Schoenmakers, Suckling
C: Savage, Burgoyne, Sheils
HF: Young, Franklin, Rioli
FF: Bateman, Roughead, Osbourne
FOLL: Renouf, Hodge, Mitchell
INT: Sewell, Lewis, Hale
SUB: Schinder

Emrg Smith, Litherland, Wanganeen, Ladson

Mainly, I'd want to organise the forward line a bit better. Give Buddy space to lead into one side or the other. Get one smaller forward (Cyril or Ozzie) to stay next to Roughie in the centre square, the other to stay out near the 50 metre mark.

Still don't have too much time for Hale, I'd send him back to BHH. Schoey once fit would be my alternate ruck / roving big man. Hopefully Large Max can come into the side.

Otherwise would change too much. Just need a bit more scoring output from running midfielders.

B: Suckers, Gilly, Laddo
HB: X-Man, Gibber, Birch
C: Savage, Sool, Young
HF: Burgers, Buddy, Louie
F: Cyril, Roughie, Ozzie
Foll: Roof, Hodge, Sammy

Int: Shiela, Changa, Schoey, sub: Goo / Puopolo

Smurf might replace Ladson once fit but he's not a big runner. Need Stratts back :(
