Some of my mates were starting up a team in a local recreational league and are getting custom uniforms. They said that the number 19 is an illegal number. I google around for illegal numbers and apparently anything with 6,7,8,9 is illegal, obviously not in the NBA though. Anyway have any of you heard of this and is it a wide known rule. FFS it's a rec league it shouldn't matter. Otherwise we'll tell the custom shirt makers to stick it and print the numbers anyway.

I'd never heard of this, but after a quick google it seems that what you describe is the NCAA numbering system. Why it would apply to any rec league is beyond me.

Edit: Just realised it's the jersey company that are saying this. If you're using a US-based co. then it would make some sense I guess. Fwiw, none of the 4 leagues I've played in ever had a problem with 6-9.

Yes number 19 is an illegall number. Its because of the ref's, they have to be able to use 2 hands to signal the foul, its hard to explain. For example your allowed 13 because you can signal it with 1 finger on 1 hand and 3 on the other.

I dunno why you said 7 8 9 are illegal.

0-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45, 50-55 are legal numbers the rest are illegal. You are right justthedukes that is because of the refs.

They never said 6,7,8,9 are illegal but they said 19 is illegal they didn't say why. It's just a rec league so I still think they wouldn't care though.

So I guess you can't have 52 or 25 if you have 7 on your team either.

Yes you can is a different hand signal when indicating the numbers for instance when signalling 52 is five fingers then 2 finger on the same hand, 25 is two fingers then 5 fingers on the same hand and 7 is five fingers and two finger on different hands at the sametime. I think that is right ???

Yeap :thumbsu: Spot on

I think its pretty stupid but ah well. Didn't really notice this until about a year ago, and ive been playing basketball for about 12 years lol.

1, 2, 3 were illegal where i played cause apparently refs used 2 or 3 fingers to indicate the shot.

17 was a requested no. from one of my mates, but the jersey maker said it was illegal.

Same with my local league.

in juniors your not allowed to have 1, 2 or 3 because they are the signals for free throws (1 bonus, 2 for a shot, 3 for a 3 point shot) and it gets confusing for people's parents (on the scorers table) whether it's foul on number 2 or 2 shots.
