interesting to see wallaces forward line plans that have otts as FF and richo CHF.

Id like Otto to hurry up and make a decison either way..in my mind schulz would be a better bet at FF...Otto hasnt played well as a key forward for as long as i can remember.

Given the strong interest i would estimate currency at either R1 pic+player or R1& 2or3 pic...with this in hand we should be able to secure simmonds...a more than adequate replacement

I'm sure I've said this before... but in case you've missed it' I'll say it again.

The only time Ottens should go to the forward line is when he needs a bit of a rest or when he is matched against Peter Street and is after a few easy goals!

Ottens is a ruckman. And in case you missed it, he is one of the better ones going around. So his work off the ball was a bit sloppy. Thank Spud for that.

Ottens is an elite level player WHO SHOULD NOT BE LET GO!

And if he did really want to return home, nothing less than 2 first rounders AND a decent player would do as compensation.

As Hawthorn and the Bulldogs would be in the prime position to get him in the PSD, Adelaide/Port have no real negotiating power and would be able to meet our requirements.

And if Otto isn't able to return to SA, then there is no benefit for him moving clubs.

Keep Ottens. Keep all the elite players. Only aim at some low key trades to get a few key defenders into the team.

i agree with CJH, Otto is a ruckmen but when he is resting he can play forward and kick a couple each week hopefully, or if we get Jolly, we can have Staff and Jolly doing ruck with Otto forward or Staff forward and Otto and Jolly sharing ruck

How about truckloads more cash?
I'm probably a bit naive because actually believe Brad that he wants to live in Melbourne. I also believe him that he wants to play for Richmond.

I agree with your sentiments Chris. I also think he is a very good ruckman. It's easy to see why Wallace would like to play him as a key forward though. When he wins in the ruck we still get killed in the clearances which negates his dominance. Meanwhile Richo is double-teamed with no other big forward capable of capitalising on the Richo conscious tactics. Ottens could if played forward, or at least take the heat off Richo and stop our forward line being so one dimensional.

As the saints have proved this year having a top line ruckman isnt the be all end all.
look at next weeks grand finalists.both sides have "2nd string ruckman".
while i want otto to stay and see how he does under TW the fact of the matter if needed then a clear message has to be sent to the playing group.
No more players holding the club to ransom!

cheers!

Otto is the best at getting a hnd to the ball in the league. He was winning the tap out for the first half opf the season until Stafford came back and took some of the ruckwork. Otto is a huge talent and we would have taken a big step backwards if we lose him. I'm annoyed that Zantuck want to leave because he would be great with Cogs and Newman in the midfield. We would get heaps of clearances with those 3 in the engine room. Chuck in Jackson and Fleming on occasions and we would have a ball winning midfields with Otto working on his tap out placements over summer and Stafford helping out, we would be pretty dangerous in the middle. Get Johnson onto a wing or a flank because he isn't a strong ballwinner, he's more of a running player.

Ottens needs to mix up his ruck work more, all he ever does is just palm it to his feet and this year we didn't have the players in there to get it, if he can just thump it forward once in a while it will make him less predictable and give our midfield more of a chance.

I actually put Stafford ahead of Ottens in the ruck at the moment and use Ottens up forward a lot, he has a great set of hands, fantastic kick and it should really straigthten us up and offer an alternative target to Richo.

Ottens a man in demand

ALL things being equal, Terry Wallace will construct the Richmond forward division around the imposing frame of Brad Ottens next year.

The new coach has earmarked Ottens for the goalsquare, with Matthew Richardson, Richmond's leading goalkicker for 10 of the past 11 seasons, to be operate from just inside the 50m arc.

The wily Wayne Campbell would play alongside Ottens, with Nathan Brown and Andrew Krakouer roaming the forward 50 for spoils at ground level.

It's an exciting scenario, but there's one major proviso: the availability of Ottens.

The ruckman-forward is out of contract and up to six clubs are after him.

It is understood Ottens' managers are seriously considering two offers, with Sydney leading the chase ahead of Geelong.

Ottens, 24, has been told his financial arrangements are about to change after three disappointing seasons.

The Tigers's offer is believed to have a significantly reduced guaranteed payment with incentives that would enable him to earn as much as he was paid this year, about $400,000, if he performs to the expected required level.

To date, he has been paid on potential, even allowing injuries, including a major back problem and an ankle he carried for much of the past season.

Richmond needs money spend and room in its salary cap if it is to land an established player such as Fremantle's out-of-contract ruckman-forward Troy Simmonds.

That money will come from the senior group, including Darren Gaspar and Ottens, two of the club's best paid players.

Sydney's general manager of football operations Andrew, Ireland, has confirmed his club's interest in Ottens.

"We've spoken to his management (Elite Sports Properties)," Ireland said last night.

"As (coach) Paul (Roos) has said, we're keen to secure experienced players during the trade period."

The Swans see Ottens as a ruckman who could relieve and then replace Jason Ball, who turns 32 in November.

The Cats see him as a key forward, probably centre half-forward.

Ottens recently had an operation to repair damage to an ankle that has bothered him for most of the season.

He played 18 of 22 games but failed to deliver on expectations. He averaged 13 disposals and five marks and kicked 16 goals.

His best season was 2001 when he kicked 46 goals in 24 games.

if he stays he will be anchored to the goal square, which i happen to think is the best option. he is the only big man in our team currently capable of regularly kicking a bag of goals other than richo, and we need more than one of them. otto to stay and a ff! i respect your opinion cjh, but i think he is more dangerous as a forward target than in the ruck.

Ottens "reluctance" to sign a contract clearly indicates to me that he his major concern is the dollars . And if you ask me he plays like it .

I would take freo`s first pick and Simmonds in the blink of an eye .

IMO , he has the bulk of the footy world hood-winked

Anyone who finishes 8th in the best and fairest of a team that is last on the ladder cannot be considered an elite player in my opinion. Ottens throughout his whole career has had potential to be in the elite but midway through his career he has produced one very good year and a whole bunch of mediocre ones.

Simmonds and a second round pick and he's theirs.

If he wants to go to Port, throw Fiora into the deal and bring over Brogan and Salopek.

I would rather keep Brogan and Salopek by a factor of everything. We're not in the competition to build the world's softest team.

IMO with a coach like Wallace shouting in his ear for the entire preseason, Ottens will improve noticeably.

Then what's Shaun Burgoyne, Adam Kingsley and Dominic Cassisi doing in your side?

A few more soft koks won't harm.

Come on, help us out here...

With all due respect John, I'm glad you won't be heading up our negotiations during trade week.

Take a look at the year Ottens and Simmonds had OMH. I wouldn't say Ottens' was better. In fact, i'd say the only thing that seperates them at the moment is hype. People are waiting for Ottens to play to his potential and take games by the scruff of the neck. It ain't going to happen!

I say we take a slightly inferior player in Simmonds and gamble with a second round draft pick.

i think oh my hat's point is that we may be able to do a little better at the trade table than that, no matter what your opinion is of him. i might not be spitting chips if that was all we got, but i would definitely be trying for more.

With Geelong supposedly trying to lure ottens down the highway what would u see as a reasonable trade for ottens?

what do u need players, draft picks, a mixture?

In his end of year report for the tiges, Anderson from the herald sun suggested that adelaide would offer picks 8, 24 and reilly for Ottens. That seemed like a dream deal for us, more than what I would have expected in return. I'd like him to stay, but if he goes then that's the sort of deal I'd like, another couple of high picks plus a rising star nominee.
