The ultimate goal is the flag, but only one team can win it every year. Does that mean that every season is an abject failure for 17 sides? I get both arguments.
However, barring a premiership, there's a few things every footy fan wants to see from their club. Heart. Direction. Purpose. An observable game plan. Players playing with intensity and passion.
The Eagles had an interesting season; huge hopes coming in, shaky foundation, a few key injuries, some great games and some bitter disappointments, but I'll be damned if I'm not proud of this last month. Derby win (always fun), but then the effort against GWS, Hawthorn and Adelaide, when it counted, on the road, against the odds in some, showing backbone in others. It's exactly what we ask from the team, it's what we've become known for not doing, and we ****ing nailed it. Not everyone can win the flag, and we didn't set ourself up for a true flag assault with early results and Nic's injury.
Flat track. Can't win away. Can't beat top eight. Can't beat top four. Kennedy can't kick multiples against good teams or good defenders.
In a league where only one team 'wins' every year, I've got to say I'm proud as hell of how we closed the season, in hugely uncharacteristic style, and that makes them winners in my book.
