Oh well this is hilarious!

The push into China was such a great success that half of China are now Port Power and Saints fans!

Having already conquered the middle kingdom dragon it's now time to conquer the Land of Indus - sometimes known as the Subcontinent.

Good luck Dylan!

(Or - it's another sad and cynical attempt to increase betting markets)

More like hes actually trying to find them to play on a station, so he say to fox dont drop the tv rights we are getting 600, 000 views in India and expect it to rise. Otherwise no tv company is ever going to pay that much again for afl.

Its why we are getting state of origin purely for tv rights and wild card finals

Correct

You have to show you're looking for growth etc

Pretty standard stuff from any business, people might disagree with Dillion but he isn't an idiot, he doesn't think the game is going to explode in India tomorrow. They just target cricket countries because they already have the grounds. India is the biggest one.

...the AFL's current or future level of popularity in India has nothing to do with the value of its TV rights in Australia. So I don't know what some of you are on about.

If they have a wider viewing audience, than they can ask for more money next deal. Fox executives are really unhappy at the cost of the tv rights for a sport played in one country, they dont see the value in it. Theres been murmurs of them already trying to get out of the deal. Its why we have wildcard round and state of origin introduced to try add more numbers and more large viewing games

If you're trying to say more viewers in India equals a better TV deal for AFL with Foxtel in Australia, well that's just not how it works.

And if you're trying to say an Indian network is going to pay any significant money for AFL TV rights in the foreseeable future, consider how much Disney Star pays Cricket Australia each year: $50m for the rights to BBL and the Australian international summer (including Tests featuring India).

Let's be extremely adventurous and say AFL somehow becomes one-tenth as popular as cricket over there. That equates to a 'whopping' $5m extra in TV rights for the league.

The rights are owned by Dayzm, which is the owner of kayo, im sure dylan is trying to lobby to get the afl on an Indian kayo and hope a few Indians watch

India is the right market to target if anywhere, they have cricket grounds, they love sport, we have a sporting culture with them through cricket, all things that China didn't have.

It's more about the huge market here to get local Indians into footy as well. I would just proactively pay TV stations a few million per year to show some games over there. But getting local Indians playing in the AFL is also important.

My best mate came to Australia from India to do University in about 2005, he's now a massive Hawks fan, went to all their gf's and his son does Auskick and all. It's definitely a massive potential growth market that the first sport in Australia to tap into it (other than cricket) will boom locally.

North and St Kilda fans better start learning one of the constitutionally recognised languages in India.

Given the growing amount of Indian interest in rugby, Lions are much better placed to ensure we don’t lose them to Aussie Rules.

Unfortunately the lions are too important to the domestic market

Here's the article. If the playing numbers are anything like the 20,000 in India the article claims, then I hope part of the strategy is funding for grassroots resources there like sherrin's, proper goalposts with padding, playing kits, coaching development etc.
