Ever had one of these before? I've only ever had one, when I was 15. Trimming the big toe nail, I happened to cut off the edge improperly. Being stupid, I neglected to take care of it promptly when it started to cause problems. What became a mild stabbing pain, became an infected pocket of pus between the skin and my toenail, and I tell you, the thing throbbed. Each time I put even the slightest amount of pressure, it felt like a hot knife was stabbing through.

Had to get antibiotics for it, and had to rub it heavily with alcohol every day and antispetic cream. The pain was probably near the level of having a kidney stone pass through. Yeah, that took a while to heal... surgery was not necessary, but I've seen cases where the entire nail is removed.

**** they hurt
hate them
what is the point of this thread though
what are we meant to be discussing?
the stories won't differ between person to person and the only conclusion one would reach was that they hurt.

It's all in the thread title, matey.

Not necessarily.

Ahh yes, nothing more fun than getting a sock full of blood from one of these after playing sport, going to a music festival, etc.

I still have to leave my left big toe nail long because it grows as far sideways as it does outwards. Never had to have surgery or antibiotics though; just padded underneath the nail with tissues so that the nail sat above the skin, and swelling went away.

if you want to get them fixed go to a podiatrist... they use a much less invasive procedure than doctors do... they just use a local, then cut away the side of the nail, kill the nail root where they don't want it to grow anymore and you're done...

i had both mine done when I was about 16, wasn't a big deal at all, and haven't had any problems since...

Yep - my dad would do that to me when I'd get ingrown toenails (happened quite often). Fortunately, thanks to wiser toe nail cutting procedure, my big toes have been pain free for a couple years now (now, if only I could get rid of those footy induced blisters/dried skin).

I had the worlds worst at about 15. It was legendary. Looked like I had another toe and would make white socks read after footy. There was a 5 game stretch where I couldn't use my right foot at all. At 16, after some serious piss drinking and in front of about 10 blokes, I ripped the whole nail off my big toe. It looked looked like something from a zombie film. One of the on-lookers through up.

Did not have one problem after that and haven't yet.

Yeah the toenail wedge resection. I had both my big toes done about a year ago for ingrown toenails. You can feel them hacking it away but you don't feel any pain.

I have had heaps of ingrown toenails, all on my biggies over the years, probably about 6 or 7.

Ahh, the dreaded ingrown toenails! I have had my fair share, and let me tell you it is probably the most pain I have ever gone through. I haven't had one in years thankgod, but when I was 14/15 they were shocking.

Went to the podiatrist and I have had about 2 ops on my left toe and 2 on the other. They used the method W00dy was talking about and it has left my nail on my left big toe rather nasty looking.

I had two bad ones a few years ago. A combination of not cutting correctly, always wearing socks and closed in shoes and generally not cleaning them too well. While they hurt badly, it was just disgusting.

I feared that going to the doctor would mean an operation. But in the end he gave me some cream to add to it for a couple of weeks. To my amazement, it cleared it up really well (don't ask me how) and I have never had the problem again.

I think Sante (Richmond poster) posted a pic of his on the old Limbo Club, **** it was disgusting.

You weren't around back then, but yes you're right.

I neglected mine too, thinking it would go away by itself, I ended up needing surgery twice on it because the hospital did a shit job and it grew back.

Here are the photo's, for those that missed it last time :D

Someone stepped on it during some indoor sport. Ouch!

Same here. Had both done about 3 months apart (around 16 yo) after having recurring problems with them for a couple of years. Never a problem since.

As for the pain, I didn't think playing sports with ingrown toenails was all that bad. Nowhere near as bad as something like shin-splints imo. Hurt a fair bit if someone landed on it (which happened often enough during basketball), but other than that it was reasonable.

They are c*nts

Had one niggling me for six weeks prior to getting it operated on. Got the portion of the nail in the infected region taken out, the anasthetics were painful as hell. Best part of it is the relief that it is all gone.

Mine isnt too bad, had it done at the doctors once. It's been on and off for about 9 yrs actually. I can just get at the bit of nail that gets up a little too high and chip it out. Need a foot tub with some salt water to soak it in and it'll be better than it is now.

Just the skin grows funny on the side now and have to peel some of that off every few days. Pretty much no pain either.
