Injuries....Bad luck or something else?

I'm just curious... exactly how do you turn the body of a 19 year old into the one of a 26 year old?

Could we stop comparing our team of kids to teams of premiership contenders as proof that our fitness staff are to blame for injuries (or our supposed lack of fitness)? Size and development in themselves are the keys into making your team less injury prone... when you start pushing young bodies to adapt to full work loads theres always a higher chance of unknown weaknesses suddenly becoming injures. Programs get adapted and modified over time and weakness get eliminated.

And at the other end of the spectrum, which funnily enough is a big issue with our list, players like Stakes just seem to have structural issues that simply make them prone to injury. Age, sadly doesn't help, with flexibility being a huge issue and I suspect it becomes a big factor to Goose and his ilk as well, and will be harder to deal with as time goes by.

I'm not sure Burts is still the right man for the job honestly, maybe it is time for a new set of eyes... but looking for reasons and people to blame for every little thing that happens to a footy team is crazy - especially the run of collision ones we've had. No one can be blamed for sheer bad luck.

People keep saying and eluding to the fact that other are looking to blame Burton for every single injury on that list. I have not seen any evidence of that al all. 'Bad Luck' only gets you by for so long in football and Burts is coming up on 5 years.

Most people who are concerned, that I have seen posting, are coming from the 'I have had enough, its time for a change' point of view. It is a big picture thing.

IMO - as I have stated, as a big picture - I am not comfortable continuing with Burtons regime, I can;t see it improving, and that is not because McStay D/C his finger, it is because we havent fielded a near to full strength side since 2012.

Burton should have had Aish on a solid regimen of gum chewing to strengthen up that jaw.

I know this is tongue in cheek (or jaw? ), but when you talk to guys who play footy and have just gone past their prime fitness (usually due to a lazy off season) they say things like 'My mind writes cheques my body can't cash anymore. It thinks it can get there, but I'm just a fraction late to the contest, or I don't see other guy coming like I used and I get hurt because of it'.

So yeah, collision injuries and knees to the jaw in marking contests are very unlucky. But players that aren't as fit as they could be are get fatigued earlier in games, which impacts decision making, and situation awareness which means they are more likely to get hurt in seemingly 'unlucky' or 'untrainable' injuries.

If you're fit you can think more clearly and use more of your energy reserves to burst when you need to, if you're just a little off the pace it can go pear shaped quickly, and freak accidents like ACLs start to happen.

I completely agree .We've got no hope of winning this week ,only a moron would play Hanley.

Similarly bringing Claye back on was about the nuttiest thing I've ever seen ,Rockcliff was obviously crook ,Aish had a broken jaw.

No wonder our guys keep getting injured if you look at how we managed last week . So what if we end with 17 players ,we're not going to win anyway.

Leaving a player of such importance (or any player) to continue playing with broken ribs, and if they are any kind of docs, they would have known or suspected they were broken again, for the sake of a footy match is just so wrong. Could have punctured his lung again..........and the same with Aish and his jaw.....and Claye with his knee.

Why the hell risk the long term health and well being of our players? I know we are desperate but surely to do and be seen to do the wrong medical thing is blatant incompetance. Yet the AFL and clubs allows these situations to happen under the guise of the docs know best.

Pressure must be being put on the medical staff from the coaches and even the players themselves (who feel obligated and want to do the right thing by the team) to play, but at some point someone has to say this is not right, NO.

A normal every day person would not be allowed to play sport........common sense says things don't heal put under further stress and knocks.

Niggly everyday aches and pain are one thing, the above 3 injuries for example, are another. Yet time and time again players play when they shouldn't.

Thats not brave in my book...it's stupidity from those above the player.

...and don't get me started on whether Hanley should play this week!.....another 2-3 weeks is not going to hurt.

Maybe, just maybe if these injuries were managed and cared for properly in the first place, and not rushed, our injury list wouldn't be as long as it is.

Is it generic playing whilst injured that is the issue or that it didn't matter - ie if we were playing in a GF and Rocky/Aish etc did their injuries would you be more inclined to accept their continuing to play in that game?
