Not as bad as it looks
Monday, 15 March 2004
The Bombers have had a recent run of injuries in the last fortnight, but the good news is none of them are long-term and close to the full list should be available by Round 2. Mark McVeigh didn't have the ideal start to his first game back from ankle surgery. He injured his hamstring in the opening quarter of the practice match in Newcastle. "We are hoping it is nothing too serious - there might just be a bit of fatigue there. We will treat it with caution and he will probably miss one to two weeks," fitness coach John Quinn said.

McVeigh joins Mark Mercuri, Aaron Henneman and Mark Johnson on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. "We have had a few hamstrings this year and we haven't changed the training around too much. It is something that we really have to look at and make sure it is something that isn't going to hold us up during the season proper," he said.

It is hard to pinpoint the exact reason why these players have done hamstring injuries and Quinn said in McVeigh's case it could have been due to two things. "It could be a conditioning thing because he is definitely behind the other players and he has been doing extra work. It could be just fatigue or it could just be one of those things."

Dean Rioli limped off the field in the second quarter of the practice match against Sydney with a suspected ankle injury. Quinn confirmed after the match that the injury wasn't serious and he won't require scans. "Dean twisted his ankle in a tackle. If we were playing next week he would play. We are not concerned with the injury - he just needs proper treatment and rehabilitation this week," Quinn said.

The two injuries overshadowed the positives to come out of the match. Ben Haynes played his first game for the season and the coaching panel was very happy with his performance. He found plenty of the ball and kicked a brilliant goal from deep in the pocket in the second term. "Haynes came back from a stress fracture and he has trained really hard. His touch in the game was terrific from someone who has missed so much footy. It was very positive and he was keen to play more time but we held him back," he said.

Damian Cupido was another player who tasted match action for the first time in 2004. He played just under one half and although struggled with the tempo of the game, will benefit from the match practice. "It is a really important part of Cupido's rehabilitation now that he gets specific match practice and footy training. He is a little bit off where he needs to be, but the practice match against the Swans was a step in the right direction."

Mark Alvey and Adam Ramanauskas also got through another game and both spent time in the midfield to improve their match fitness and touch. "It is good to see Rama out there and going and with each match he is getting a little bit better." Quinn said it is likely the club will seek permission from the AFL for a handful of players to play in the ‘gap week.’ "The guys that have missed significant amounts of training we will ask the AFL permission to let them play next week. Guys like Ramanauskas, Reynolds, Henneman, Cupido. For those guys it is really important that they get a bit of match practice," Quinn said.

Dean Solomon is making great progress with his injury. At this stage he is expected to be available in Round 2 against St.Kilda. Sean Wellman is also recovering well from ligament damage in his foot. He is also on track for a possible Round 2 return. Aaron Henneman is close to full recovery from the hamstring strain and at this stage should be available for Round 1 selection.

In terms of training this week, Quinn said it will be a busy week on the track. "We will have a fairly solid week on the track this week given that the players are going to have this weekend off and then a light-ish week going into play Port Adelaide over there."
