Why the hell would you pick a rookie (A.Varcoe) if they are going to be out for practically the entire season. I hope that information is not correct.

I thought I read somewhere that he hopes to play VFL footy with in the first few weeks of the season.I think he did his knee early last year. You must remember this info has come from the Geelong News. That makes the Addy look like the Wall Street Journal.

Why would you pick a guy who has only played 3 games in the year as a 1st round draft pick? ... Maybe the recruiting staff saw something in him that they thought was worth overlooking the injury for. Remember our rookies also include Mummy and Ranga so the others on the rookie list are unlikely to play this year and would not have been picked to have an immediate impact.

Well said Asty :thumbsu:
Motlop and A Varcoe were drafted for the future, not the present. If we're that desperate this year that we're getting down to one of our last picks and a Rookie, both only 17 or 18,to play senior footy this year then we're screwed. If either do play senior footy this year due to earning a game with good VFL form, then it's a massive bonus

That's correct, but it still essentially knocks a year off their development which will be somewhat detrimental to the club down the track. Not that I really mind, win a flag this year and/or next and we can sit down the bottom for the next 10.

How does drafting them knock a year off their development ?
They were both going to miss some footy this year, but now they're getting regular treatment and rehab at the club where as they might not of got as much if they were still playing State League footy and their recovery may've taken longer.

The only issue i see is it only gives Adam Varcoe just really one year to prove why he should be upgraded from the rookie list to the main list.

But im sure the club understand were he is at.

So 2 of our 4 draftees are essentially out for the season?!
No. We took four players in the main draft (hence they're elligible to play seniors) - Mitch Brown, Tom Gillies, Steven Motlop and Taylor Hunt. We took four in the rookie draft - Adam Varcoe, Tom Allwright, Bryn Weadon and Ranga Ediriwickrama. Out of the guys on the rookie list it looks like Ranga will be promoted from the start of the season and Mumford will be promoted as of Round 11.

As JUBJUB said it's not a massive loss, both players were undery injury clouds when they were drafted and Motlop in particular is nowhere near ready to play senior footy. It's not like we're suffering a lack of small, speedy small/half forwards in the squad anyway.

Keep in mind that we're going into a period of compromised drafts. I think it's pretty clear from the club's efforts leading up to this years draft(s), and the signing of so many NSW Scholarship kids, that they think the cupboard's going to be pretty bare over the next few years. If that means elevating rookies instead, so be it.

I'm sure Motlop and Varcoe would be considered project players who obviously show potential but would not be expected to be ready for Senior football for at least another 2 years.
Very similar to Hogan who is only now starting to challenge for a game in his 3 year.

Drafting a player on a two year deal in the national draft that has had injury concerns and slipped down the draft order a bit e.g. T.Varcoe, Motlop, Gamble I don't have a problem with.

Taking a player, especially a fringe draftee like A.Varcoe, on a one year rookie deal when they can't actually play for the season is dumb if that injury news is correct.

I believe interstate rookies are guaranteed two years.

For reasons that you will elucidate in your next post?

My understanding is that interstate rookies were guaranteed a minimum of two years when the base salary of a rookie was paltry, around $15k per annum. The AFLPA have since negotiated this up to over a $30k base plus relocation expenses for rookies drafted from interstate and with this I'm pretty sure they've dropped the two year min contract.

e.g. Cats took Jarrod Garth from Tasmania a couple of years ago and cut him loose after one year on the rookie list.

It was a fact 5 years ago, not any more.

Even if it's not the case any more, it seems unlikely that the club would recruit someone returning from a knee reco with the intention of only keeping them on the year for one season. Even though they may only be obliged to contract him for one season, there is always the option (and likelihood if he only plays half of 2009) that they will retain him for 2010.
