Poor Claye, just never had a decent run at it and I'm not sure his body will ever give him the opportunity. Will probably depend on the outgoing but I wonder if the club will look at moving him back to the rookie list for the remainder of his contract to give us some flexibility in November?

When I heard, I thought the same thing. I sadly doubt Clay will play many more games in his career.

Recovery Report: Round 22

Michael Close could return for the Lions’ final game of the 2016 season, against St Kilda on Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

Close missed last weekend’s clash with Geelong with knee soreness.

The 22-year-old forward has kicked six goals in his two games for the Club this season after recovering from an ACL injury.

“Closey pulled up with some swelling in his knee after the last game,” said Lions Head of Physiotherapy Shane Lemcke.

“Given that he’s had a previous ACL reconstruction we didn’t want to take any risks.

“There is still a little bit of swelling in it so he’ll be a test for this week but is still a chance of playing.”

Lions Health Centre: Injury List

Meanwhile Jackson Paine injured his left ankle in Sunday’s loss to Geelong.

“Jackson hurt his ankle in a collision with Dan Merrett. It was only ten minutes in. He’s actually done as fair bit of damage to his syndesmosis.

“It was really quite courageous for him to play through the rest of the game. He won’t be available this weekend.”

State of play: Your club's injury list for the off-season

The priority for the Lions is Dayne Beams. Knee tendinitis forced him under the knife twice this year, with the latest bout in May, but he has returned to running and will do a full pre-season. Similarly, Allen Christensen won't have his preparation hindered after a fractured collarbone that required an operation in June. Beams' brother Claye had surgery on his knee in July and is set to join the main group early next year. Dan McStay will join him around the same time after he went under the knife for a fractured ankle in July. Tom Cutler will be out for a similar period after a shoulder reconstruction. Hamstring surgery for Marco Paparone will see him eased into pre-season training. An operation on Ryan Lester's lower back means he won't rejoin the main group until around December. Minor ankle surgery to Darcy Gardiner and Lewis Taylor won't keep them from starting pre-season, while Michael Close should be right to go in a similar timeframe after a minor knee operation. A second reconstruction on Sam Skinner's left knee means he will be out for much of 2017. Reuben William will be right for the start of pre-season after a minor groin operation. - Dinny Navaratnam

Rule them out for round one: Sam Skinner (knee)

Three Lions on the mend

Three Brisbane Lions are now working through rehabilitation after being injured in the recent days.

Allen Christensen (collarbone), Josh Schache (knee) and Jono Freeman (cheekbone) are all on the mend but will miss games in coming weeks.

Christensen had surgery yesterday to insert a plate and is expected to miss 8-10 weeks – it was the same collarbone he broke in Round 11 last season against Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Schache did not require surgery after receiving a low-grade medial ligament strain in a contact drill at training and will miss the remainder of the JLT Community Series.

The young forward has already started rehab and is expected to return in Round 1 or 2 of the Premiership season.

Freeman had minor surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone suffered in training yesterday, and is expect to miss 4-6 weeks.

Great, so 2 of our forwards may not be available for round 1 then. Looks like a Close, Walker, Hipwood forward line is looking posible then. Goes to show you can't have too many options thats for sure.
And the more talls that go down, the higher the probability we will go with both Steff and Archie. Maybe we would have anyway.

The more talls we have the more likely we'll have injured talls.

Berry back for round 1 (through reserves you'd think)
McCluggage out of boot and will resume running next week (no time frame)
Schache on track for round 1 (low-grade medial)
Christensen out for 6 weeks (4 non-contact then 2 weeks training/testing)
Freeman touch and go for round 1 (cheek fracture)
Marco back running, just missed his 3km PB - back round 2 or 3
No damage for Lester (knee)

Matho 4-6 weeks with an ankle injury at training. Fook.
Why are we losing all of our most talented players/youngsters with little annoying injuries that are popping up out of nowhere either at training or during the JLT games that we weren't made aware of till after the fact? Christensen, Schache, McCluggage and now Mathieson. So frustrating.

So....
Skinner - TBC (8-14 weeks?)
Witherden - TBC (?)
Christensen - 6 weeks
Matho - 4-6 weeks
Papa - 2-3 weeks
McCluggage - 1-2 weeks
Schache - 1-2 weeks
Berry - Test
Freeman - Test
Hanley - Playing Neafl scratchy?
I think Witherden is fit now also isn't he? Obviously returns via NEAFL but I think he posted on Instagram that his recovery was finished. Fagan said at the Vic Members forum that Skinner would be back playing in May also so 8-12 seems about right.

OK cool. Will be interesting to see if Witherden turns out in the Neafl this week or not. Might also change Skinner to 6-10.

I'm assuming most of these injuries require scans, ultrasound, X-rays etc. At the very least assessment, icing and anti-inflams. Not surprising we don't hear about them for some time afterwards and the extent of the injury is known.
