no Birss ? no Fergusson ?

Milne - if you drop him, do it interstate and when Schneider is playing !

Dal Santo - cojones !

Schneider - injured ? anyway, deserves a week with Casey

Dal Santo as EMG...

LTM4G may have been right - someone may have a last minute 'injury'...

But if that were really the case, I'd lose my last bit of respect for Lyon. He has made a tough decision which will be a wake up call for all players (dropping Milne despite Schneider out injured is a another clear signal). It may be a dumb decision (we'll see tomorrow and mainly once Dal Santo is back in the team - next week ?), but at least he is finally walking the talk.

Going back would make him the laughing stock of his players who would not be able to respect him any more. It would be the end for him.

I'm not convinced that dropping Dal Santo was a good decision, but now that he has taken such a tough decision, he'll better stick with it !

It's fair to say I've been left speechless by the decision to drop Dal.

I completely understand where Lyon is coming from with the need to make a statement but dropping one of your potential match winners ahead of a Friday night game with the eyes of the nation focused on us could come back to backfire big time.

He has underperformed this season, no doubt about it. However his level of performance is still ahead of most of the team and it will have a big impact on our skill level in the middle of the ground in particular. He's one of the few midfielders that consistently hits targets and he adds the bit of polish to the grunt work that we get from the likes of Hayes and Ball.

That being said, I'm really happy for the three kids to make their debuts along with the return of Armitage. It's been said that we don't have the young talent coming through that most clubs enjoy. Well lets see. It's a big ask expecting them to make an impact but you'd like to hope that their enthusisasm will rub off on the rest of the team. Perhaps it's the shake up we needed?

Anyway full credit to Ross Lyon for biting the bullet and making a big statement. This could backfire disasterously and friday night footy is probably not the place that you'd want for it to happen.

Is it just me or does this look like a NAB Cup side? Maybe it just looks that way at first glance, but there seems to be a fair chunk of what I'd say is our best 22 missing.

I guess that it is certainly a bit unusual to have three first game players in your team...

I like your reference to a NAB Cup side - the first three rounds of this year's preseason were possibly the best I've seen of St Kilda this season !

So, let's see what the kids are made of. It's not really fair on them (especially on a Friday night game), but you never know, they may bring back that enthusiasm and joy I saw in the preseason. Who would Essendon be willing to trade for Dal Santo - they are giving quite a few youngsters a good chance this year.

But god help Ross Lyon if Fremantle thrashes us tomorrow night !

Rather than looking at the ins and outs, consider this:

Jarryn Geary
Clint Jones
Jarryd Allen
David Armitage
Ben McEvoy
Robert Eddy

That's more than a quarter of our team with, what? 50 games between them. And, in addition to them there's Gwilt and Mini. That's a very green team.

I like the dropping of Dal. Sends a rocket through the team but there's no question that this team is an extremely out there option. Maybe we'll beat Freo simply because they won't even know what foot half the side kicks with, let alone how they play. "McEvoy, is he the speedy winger?"

also, re Dal - I didn't see last week's game (was in sydney at a party!). Did Joey go alright? I figure he could be considering himself lucky it wasn't him popping out to Casey.

Very inexperienced.

And it's not even due to a massive injury toll as in previous seasons.

If Dal Santo is dropped for his current form then Joey can count himself extremely lucky. I'm sure it just came down to the fact that the team is so inexperienced going into tomorrow night that we couldn't afford to drop both of them and Dal was the unlucky player on this occasion.

My worry is if he doesn't come out and have a big game for the Scorpions. You'd almost be forced to leave him in the VFL for an extended period because there's no point dropping him if you're only going to promote him the following week regardless of form.

This is NUTS!!!! How about some perspective people?

Dal Santo isn't in bad form either!!!! He's just been inconsistent when played with a hard tag.... Let me think, how many posessions does Judd gets when Baker plays on him? 3 and cops a suspension??? See the below statistics.... When Baker's played Chris Judd, Judd has averaged 12 disposals.

Code:
Player MT K	H	D Avg M Avg HO Avg T Avg FF	FA G Avg B	SC Rat Avg
Judd	6	48	28	76	12.7	5	0.8	0	0	22	3.7	4	4	2	0.3	5	17	312	52
Baker	6	40	28	68	11.3	13	2.2	0	0	21	3.5	1	2	0	0	2	2	296	49.3
Totals	12	88	56	144	12	18	1.5	0	0	43	3.6	5	6	2	0.2	7	19	608	50.7

Here's Dal Santo, getting 17 disposals against a very man to man accountable team. On average across his entire playing career, he's played the worst against Sydney, generally.

At the same time, he's been quite respecatable against Fremantle, i.e. 18 disposals and a goal average. If that's not enough, WHAT IS??? And, no, he doesn't play on the backline to get disposals. He plays in the midfield, and usually goes back to help out as well as he is generally a good kick.

Code:
MT Versus K	H	D Avg M Avg HO Avg T Avg FF	FA G Avg B	SC Rat Avg
Fremantle	95	70	165	18.3	37	4.1	3	0.3	32	3.6	9	3	9	1	2	56	723	80.3

who is mini?

dalsanto always smashes us, im glad he isnt playing, now crowley can go to hayes

hard to fathom lyon's logic, his average is most other players best

Mini = McQualter

Some new guy trying to prove himself. Won't hurt you too much.
That's one of the most annoying things about the dropping of Dal. McQualter has already had 3 full seasons to prove himself and he did shit all and was delisted. I mean seeing Allen given a run in the big time would make Dal's exclusion easier to take, but the fact that there are proven duds like McQualter and Gwilt playing seniors whilst Dal Santo (who has been better than all but maybe 5 of our players this year, despite his soft efforts) is wasting his talent in the bloody VFL.

Dal Santo is generally soft, although he has played tough earlier in his career. Ditto for Milne, who we may potentially never see again. The new blokes coming in know what they have to do to stay in - play tough. In that way, it's a really good message. Be harder at the ball than your team mates, and you stay in the team. We have been too soft, so the softest had to be dropped.

That being said, this is still a massive gamble. It could be a train wreck.

McQualter has earned a second chance.

You know the story: he was delisted last year by the Saints, he tried out at another club and wasn't picked up. The Saints redrafted him through the rookie draft and he has been relegated to playing in the Scorpions. He equipped himself quite well - with a series of BOG's and tireless performances.

The effort was enough to impress the selectors who delisted him. They saw the effort he was putting in and with a few long term injuries at the club and the salary cap not much of an issue this year:

11.6 In calculation of the Total Player Payments, the following payments will not be taken into account:

(a) relocation expenses incurred by an AFL Club in respect of an AFL Player
pursuant to paragraph 8 of Schedule B;
(b) the cost of air fares and taxi fares paid in accordance with clause 9.1(a)(ii);
(c) bereavement assistance (paid to a Player or an Associate of a Player) up to a limit of $2,000 in the event of a bereavement (or other genuine hardship)
affecting the Player;
(d) the percentage of Football Payments as determined in accordance with
clause 13.3 to Players nominated as veteran Players on the AFL Club’s
Primary List or included on the AFL Club’s Veterans List;
(e) the Football Payments made to a Rookie temporarily promoted to the
Primary List of an AFL Club to replace a Player transferred to the Long
Term Injury List

So he finally pushes his way back into the side - and it is against Sydney :rolleyes: - the whole team play woefully - and his efforts are not appreciated.

It would be unfair to relegate him back to the Scorps on that one effort.
He should get three or four games just to re-adjust to the pace of the AFL.
He should be given enough game time to show his wares. He should also be given enough rope to hang himself - he must be accountable to his performances - as this will be his very last chance to prove himself worthy of wearing the St Kilda jumper.

Bakergate?

This week will be Maccagate! Macca wins it with a tap out from the centre of the ground through the goals, ajudicated by one of the umpires as a kick. All video footage is later lost and as a result the result can't be changed.

This amounts to a club in total dissaray. This has to be a problem between the coach and player. Lyon says he has missed benchmarks, clearly his benchmarks are different from other absolute duds running around at the moment. Dempster, Gardiner, Schneider have a Carlton Dennis Pagan, recruiting feel about them, they are absolute duds. How could you play Geary ahead of Armitage, how could you even consider Gwilt as a long term AFL player. Montagna is not half the player of Dal.

Lyon may have taken 18 months to decide on Milne, a decision that GT had already taken, (too slow Ross), but this disgrace with Dal puts him in line as the worst coach since John Devine.
