over the past month i have never seen one player tagged so heavily like judd.

the top 4 sides all have one or two inside mid who would help block for their star men and extract the ball from underneath

we need someone like that to help judd with his tags.
need a player of a luke ball, sewell, jude bolton type player in the team

On the contrary, Judd being heavily tagged actually makes our opposition more vulnerable.

So much attention still gets put on stopping Judd, and the likes of Murphy, Simpson, Scotland and Robinson all find getting touches quite easy. Honestly, I'm not that bothered.

I think Juddy could stand to throw a bit of variety into his gamestyle too. Give himself a bit more distance off the contest for one, and his team mates need to protect his space a bit better as well. Didnt see a single player put any body on Selwood last night. Judd plays at the foot of the contest, so he's always within 5 metres of the ball which in my opinion = hunting season on all taggers and scraggers.

Oh how i dream off Juddy juggling the ball in one hand while trying to shake his other hand free of a tagger (you know the look), then seeing Robbo absolutely destroy the tagger from the side or front on right down the middle.

Agreed.

On the one hand though, a premiership team still wouldnt allow it to happen. sometimes i feel like we are using and abusing Juddy for all he's worth (paying well for the priveledge though..) and at the end of his contract he's going to be a shell of his former self.

Did anyone see how crippled he looked in the sheds after the game? Poor bloke could hardly stand.

Since Judd came along we've recruited

Hadley
McLean
Curnow

All of whom showed promise at the start, but injuries brought them back to Earth.

Ellard is a homegrown candidate, but how much improvement is in him?

It's not exactly something the club's unaware of.

What's the situation with Koby Stevens's contract?

Second year inside player who is on the fringes with Masten, Gaff, Embley, the Selwoods, Priddis, Rosa (when fit) and Kerr playing midfield. Don't know what it would take to recruit Stevens and how he's gone in the WAFL, but he might be worth a look. Originally from Victoria.

do agree judd was far more damaging when curnow was in the team

curnow is the answer. after reading some of the posts here

Jordan Russell.
Time for a big pre-season and him to re-invent his position in the team.
Not bad, not bad. He has played a defensive role for the past couple of years and has still been able to find a few touches of the ball himself.

I like it.

The suggestion for Russell to reinvent himself into an inside midfielder could be exactly what he needs.

Started off as a mid if I remember correctly with those long locks.

Maybe if we could give him a full pre-season and train him into the role (e.g. Yarran), he might flourish? Certainly has the body for it.

Dont think we can afford to have both ellard and curnow in the same 22, so what would we rather:

- curnow in to help give juddy a chop out
or
- davey in there, with the ability to push forward and kick goals?

davey > curnow in terms of being able to push forward and convert

The best inside mids are born not made.

Like mclean Has to play inside cuz he is slow and unskilled.

Yet lacks the trademarks of a pure inside Ie Diesel and Sam mitchell- 1grab first touch quick hands and creativity by hand.

They have to be natural and have the ready made skill set.

I think a major part of it is that Juddy is either playing injured or more likely just lost a bit of form. He may have even lost a bit of self belief - that he could beat tags.

Great midfielders have been tagged heavily for the last 20yrs. I don't even see Selwood being in the class of some taggers. Kerr and Priddis were getting attention from our blokes but they kept wrenching the ball out of peoples hands and getting disposals

Previous posters have mentioned Juddy not mixing it up very much (standing off and rushing as much as he used to) and the need for his tagger to cop a whack from the likes of Robbo - all of which will help but the biggest factor is that Juddy has lacked his explosiveness.

I do not want him in contention for the brownlow next year. I want him rested a couple of times if we have an easy match and game % cut down or subbed if we have a match in the bag even if he is BOG at half time. He has got to come into finals fresh (like Kerr)

Has anyone seen Diesel on the golf course lately? Does he look like he would be fit enough to go another season or two? He couldnt of got any slower.

All the people calling for McLean forget it, the guy is far too slow at AFL level. Curnow has lost confidence in his body after getting injured the first time so we are going to have to find someone else.

Why can't Marcus Davies be an option as an inside midfielder? When he was playing senior footy down in Tassie this was where he was playing and his performance as an inside mid was what got him drafted. With his endurance, big body and ground level skills I find it hard to believe the Bullants don't use him this way and can't fathom why the club wants to make him a back pocket/flanker.
