Avoiding the Judd thread title (and hopefully the maniacs that follow them), here's an article from the Age on Judd's trade value. Quite honestly, I think this guy is caught up in Judd mania. But if his assessment of Judd's trade value is true, then Judd leaving isn't such a grim prospect after all.

amazing how highly Judd is rated.... whatever the outcome at seasons end, we'll come out on top IMO

wow!

that article is pretty amazing to be honest. that guy seems like an one-eyed eagles supporter or something. we would be definately ahead or at least equal on the trades mentioned as possibilites.

i find it hard to believe that goddard plus a draft pick, or wells plus a draft pick and so on. well one thing for sure as long as we be smart and dont lose judd to the pre-season draft is that we will be on top in the eventual outcome.

my tip = judd to stay, eagles to be a consistent successful team in the oncoming years a deciding factor.

I doubt Victoria can afford a Victorian like Judd.

Vic clubs will have to play with a skinny list of 30-35 players just to fit Judd in.

I hope like hell that Juddy stays. Both my boys adore him. Both wear number 3 on their back. My eldest whose name is Chris also loves Chris Mainwaring. Also number 3. That shows how much fans can idolise ourplayers. Juddy will become the heart and sole of the Club over a lengthy career. One day we will hold him in the same high regard as we do Woosha, McKenna, Kempy, Roo etc as we will Gardy, Cuz and Wirra.

So there is his value.

The real trade value? Well we would have to start with Wells, Hay, Coughlan and another early first round Draft pick. Didnt Bell go for Sinclair plus two first round picks? This is the sort of currency we are looking at. A future premiership player with 12 years ahead of him. I dont think the Vics could do it plus stay under their Salary cap. Unless Judd goes to a lowly team. But the way he prepares himself I doubt whether he would be satisfied with that.

I think he will stay.

I am not sure about other clubs, but my team, the Kangaroos, are already on a lower salary cap whilst reconstructing the financial side of the business.

With Wayne Carey off the books and some of the higher paid players eligible for the veteran list I think we could fit Judd into our salary cap easily.

The timing is not great though, Wells will most likely have a much higher market value in 2 to 3 years than he does now, with Judd having a good season he would obviously draw a premium.

I honestly can't see West Coast trading Judd for Wells. I would think they would use a high value player like him to get a talented forward or defender. West Coast have alot of great runners already, would not be a great deal to trade one for another.

The biggest problem the Kangaroos (and others) have is that the AFL will not allow them to spend the full salary cap whilst receiving money from the AFL. You may hap cap room, but unfortunately you won't be allowed to use it.

Its an interesting discussion, although I don't see Judd leaving West Coast for quite a while, if he ever does.

I'd image we are well under the manditory cap placed by the AFL with both Carey and Pickett leaving in the same year. I am not sure how many contracts came up for renegotiation at the end of last year but I doubt it is anywhere near what those two were paid.

I believe both the Bulldogs and ourselves were allowed to ignore the minimum payment rule whilst the financial situation was being corrected. I would expect that our situation is more a short-term problem rather than a long-term problem.

It is a not exactly a workable solution to place restrictions on our salary cap and our ability to compete with other clubs on the field when our ability to pay our own way is handicapped by the AFL's biased scheduling of Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton and Richmond to play at the times and at the venues that maximise their ability to draw large crowds and penalsie the smaller Victorian clubs.

Look at the Bulldogs, had a few injuries and they don't have the depth to replace them. They become less competitive on the field and dont win many games. They have fewer supporters going to the game, fewer members re-sign and they will be stuck in a neverending loop of dependancy on the AFL until it becomes a burden all the clubs cannot afford.

We have had to put in a long-term financial plan that the AFL accepted which was based around cutting operating costs to the bare minimum, to place additional limitations which affects the ability to win football games is very harsh in my opinion. Perhaps at the end of the day it will contribute towards preventing us from getting another decent player like Judd or someone else.

Once the AFL starts giving all the Victorian clubs a more equitable access to the scheduling of games and a fairer opportunity to become profitable then they can be more aggressive about restricting player payments for clubs that are struggling financially.

I have no problem with the AFL setting up all their blockbuster games to maximise their earnings as long as they realise that by doing so they have a responsibility to those clubs that always miss out year after year.

- even with Knuckley in the veteran's list next year they still can't afford him.
- they have many many crap players on inflated salaries
- thus they have nothing to interest West Coast Eagles - Adkins - thank goodness we saved him mediocrity
- salary cap - impossible
- Eddie McGuire will hold his breath if he doesn't get Judd - he explodes - the end.

Anyone can afford it, its just a matter of making room for him. If Collingwood wanted to squeeze Judd in they would just trade decent fringe players to clubs low on the ladder like Bulldogs and whoever ends up down there for draft picks then trade someone like a defender or forward to West Coast plus a wad of extra draft picks.

That would free up the space to trade him whilst giving a player that would benefit the team plus an option at looking at some decent draft picks in a year when you are unlikely to get a look in if you finish very high on the ladder.

You might say the Collingwood has nobody of equivalent value, but if really do not really have players that will come in and replace players like Jakovich or McIntosh then trading is the one way to fix holes quickly.

You have to look at the opportunity cost. How much worse would West Coast be in the midfield/running department without Judd. How much better would the team be with what he could bring into the team via trades.

If the gain is not worth the loss then he would never be traded. But if it is then I think he would be traded. I just don't see the need to do it this year because there are no huge holes in the team as far as I am aware of.
