At the end of the month i intend to swap internet companies. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I need a company the provides unlimited downloads, no time restrictions and has either no or good idle d/c times.

I would appreciate anyone's help here.

Primus has an Infinity plan without any limitations, but in my experiences with Primus, I got chopped a lot. Maximum of four hours online per session.

AOL has a plan of no limits, with a maximum of 12 hours online per session.
Only negative there, is the browser the AOL uses, although it can be minimised and you use IE as normal.

Darky, I have AOL but can't minimise it and use IE as my browser. It keeps on searching for my old ISP, but I've got rid of my old ISP settings.
Do you know how to get it to work?

I go through Dingoblue. $25 a month, unlimited downloads, no time restrictions. The only thing is that you have to switch over to them for your long distance phone calls, which isn't too bad considering they match Telstra in reguards to rates etc. I think it's $45 a month if you don't switch. I've never had a problem dialing in, the lines are never congested. Sometimes it's a little on the slow side, but over all, I've been completely satisfied with them over the past 18 months. Ditching Primus was the best thing I ever did.....

It probably means you've still got your old ISP set as your default dial-up.

Go to the Start Menu >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>> Internet Options >>> Connections, and you should be able to change your default dial-up from there. I have access to 3 different ISPs on my computer, so I don't have a default set.

To minimise (not close) the AOL browser, it should be as easy as minimising an ordinary window, then opening IE from your desktop.
Closing the AOL browser will disconnect you, but just minimising it will run IE as normal.

Normally I would reccomend Optus@home cable.....

except all international links have been down for up to 24 hours at the moment. Probably did me a favour anyway, kept me away from the net for a while and try and rest up with this darn flu.....

But thanks to the lovely person who gave me the telstra proxy's I can get around the net again while optus@home try to get their sh*t together.

Normally a service that can't be faulted, permanent connection, high speed data delivery, no limits - well unless you plan on downloading 500meg a day. I think that is about their cutoff point.

I haven't heard about Primus before.
Bigpond is very slow, lots of kickoffs.
I have heard Dingoblue are ok, a mate of mine is with them.
I also heard australiaonline is ok.
We are with a local provider where we live. They are great. The major problem is the older telephone lines. This can cause you to have drop outs etc.

Well i use GoConnect and it costs $19.95 a month
unlimited number of hours a month. But the two catches are that you can only be online for a maximum of 5 hours at a time and it has an idle-timeout thingo of 20 minutes

Its very good though

well, i have bigpond cable... and had no probs with it, it runs like a dream!!

bugger those 56k modems!!!!

lol:p

damn, wish i had cable..

but, still on a 56k dialup...

i use Ozemail.com.au

pay $24.95 a month (if u are student, u can get it for $18.95)..

no download limits at all..
no time restrictions
unlimited everything..

and, being ozemail, large co...
great support.... and lines are NEVER congested...

You're kidding right? BigPond Advance has people leaving it in droves!! 3GB d/l limit and a 68kb/s bandwidth cap!! To put this into context, it means that you can view BigBrother cams in their full 'choppy' glory.

I'm with Optus@Home and their AUP is a whole lot more fairer (only if you use 10X the average usage over 14 days will you get a warning). Also, i haven't had a problem in the 14 months that i have been using it.

Will never go back to dial-up!

Aghh, but you see, I use Gatewaynet through bigpond so I get unlimited everything and a fast connection. Bugger if I know how normal users on bigpond are treated like.

I've got DingoBlue and I absolutely HATE THEM !!!!!!!!!!

I can't play Half-life on the net cause they d/c me almost as soon as i log onto a server. They have now put on a download limit and an Idle time. And playing online games is not considered surfing the net(according to a DingoBlue phone lady) so i can't play games.

I think they put the restrictions on because of my family, we were connected for over 120hrs 3 times in one month once and downloaded 7Gigs on dial-up in one of those long sessions. :D :D :D

Ohh...and thanks for all the suggestions, i really appreciate it. I'd love to get cable, but it doesn't run through my street.

For cable go ..optus, for non cable ..ozemail, and if you are budgeting and dont mind a three hour online time limit before reconnecting go ..alphalink(very cheap).

Do you have any problem with the idle d/c??? I have found that just in the last week or so, if I leave my comp for more than 10-15 mins, it d/c's me, grrrrrrrrrr. but before that, had no probs. But yeah, overall, I would have to recommend Ozemail too. Apart from the problem I just mentioned, it's all been excellent. No complaints.

Check if it's still offered, but when I signed up for the Oz E Shout deal (the $24.95 a month unlimited one we are talking of) the first 3 months were free!!!!!! :D Yippee lol
