G'day guys.

I'm using a Bigpond Broadband Unlimited 512/128 deal.

However, after doing an internet speedtest, I found out that my speed was quite low:

- Download: 410kbps
- Upload: 98.52

This seems a fair way off 512/128...

Is it Bigpond stuffing up? Or is it something else? Or is this normal?

Normal as ''normal'' can be. Someone may be able to explain it better than me but basically the speeds quoted are clean maximum speeds eg if your line is clean and noone else is online.

I am on dialup and I have a 56k modem...never gone past 46.6k thats 20% so 410/512 is a 20% reduction as well.

Other Broadband users may quote their speeds and see how you compare

If you get within 10% of the advertised download speed you are doing well. Phone line latency can be a killer..

Just so you know, if you notice international downloads not going over about 75 KB/s, its probably windows needing a tune, since windows is not set up for high bandwidth internet. There is a program called unblocka, which should remove the limits. I would advise reading about the program first before playing with this as it can cause some problems if not used correctly. I remember reading a whirlpool.net thread about it in the iinet forum. (This won't affect those on 512kbs lines or less as you'll never get over about 60KBs anyway)

You will never get the noted speed. The max for 512k is just over 60Kb/s...
You aren't doing too bad at all. Also, those speed tests aren't all that accurate.

yeah your right. Apparently we have one of the slowest internet speeds out of all the developed countries. Until Telstra are given the go ahead to upgrade their network to fibre nothing will change.

Yep. It's fine that other companies are installing their own DSLAM's etc, but the network between exchanges is what the problem is.
