Yeh went and watched the game today, but didn't have a sheet to see how most of the rookie listed / new players went.

Des played great during the match, I was actually surprised to see how small he looked while watching the game, has he lost a bit of bulk?

Pav, along with Des would probably have to take the BOG honours. He looks like he is really primed for a spot in the midfield and kept running all day. His long kicking and follow up efforts were great to watch.

Medhurst and Croad were the standouts as far as the forwards went, with medhurst constantly getting away from his various markers and taking some easy chest-marks. Croad took some strong grabs in the game and also looked to great a few with some strong work inside the forward 50. Polak looked good when he was moved onto Croad in the 4th, and looked to have good poise in the backline.

Of the new blokes, Edgecumbe and Crowley did some good things throughout the match, but being early in their careers, their decision making at times was a little rushed.

Ricky Mott showed a bit, looked as though he could come into the team and play at any time this year, has a booming kick and did alright in the ruck, but is a bit slow around the ground.

The Ogre had some good tap in the middle, but I don't think I saw him take a mark around the ground for the majority of the game.

I saw Schammer at half time having a kick around. He looks a good midfield in and under size with a decent kick. While he would hold the ball with either hand, his wrist still isn't up to marking the ball, and hence he would only mark it with one hand. So I don't really know how long it will take him to get over the injury.

On the whole it was a pretty good hitout. There were some passages of play which were very direct and worked well, something we probably haven't been used to seeing in the past. But all is looking good for the start of the Wizard Cup in a weeks time.

Yeah there were some very impressive signs from the game today...

Croad played very well up forward, taking contested marks against his opponents and slotting a beautiful set shot from 50 metres out on the boundary line. As FreoDocker said, Medhurst was also impressive in the forward line.

Haddrill, playing across half back, proved that he could hold his own in defence. He showed that he can take a good mark and he has a bit of bulk about him as well.

# 30 for the red team - I think it may have been Brent Doswell - showed a lot of athleticism, won a lot of the ball from the centre and looks like a fine prospect. He may prove to be a handy pick up considering we drafted him at pick 63 in last years draft. (Can someone can confirm that # 30 for the red team was Brent Doswell?)

Cook showed that his disposals by foot had improved dramatically with a skills focused pre-season. His kicks were hitting team mates on the chest and he often looked to have penetration (something which I've never seen in his kicking action before).

Haines showed that he will improve once again in 2003, but perhaps the most surprising aspects of the game were the improvement of Woods and Walker...

Woods looks to have grown and added some extra weight to his lean frame over the pre-season. His dashes from half back for the red team were a delight to watch.

Walker - like Cook - seems to have improved his disposal skills, hitting team mates on the chest in tight situations. His pace and improved skill should see him become a handy player for us this season.

Troy Longmuir played well I thought, kicking 3 goals (including One nine pointer) but the best players on the ground IMO would have to have been Headland, Pav and Hase. Headland looks much fitter and leaner, spending the entire game in the midfield, Pav looked very good in the midfield with regular stints up forward and Hase played as well as he was playing throughout the 2002 season, if not better.

Like FreoDocker said, Mott showed a bit with a booming kick from inside the centre square that carried all the way to the goalsquare. He did look very slow however, with many players able to easily step around him. Simmonds and Carr both played well.

For me, the highlight of the game was an incident along the wing (on the two tier stand stand) where Headland was in possession of the ball and was in hot pursuit by Pav. They must have ran for at least 30 metres. No, Pav didn't catch him but Headland didn't increase the distance between them either. It exemplified the commitment and intensity of the game...

FreoDocker, where were you sitting?
