Feb 6 IntraClub- The Good The Bad The Ugly

High was the sun and bright our hearts, etc etc etc, as your not very humble correspondent ventured forth to Subi, for what turned out to be a very very interesting scratchmatch indeed.

The teams-
Away Guernsey- Judd, Morrison, Fletcher, Munro, Wooden, McDougall, Cox, McConnell, Nicoski, Waters, Butler, Staker, Johnson, Beeck, Wirrpunda, Matera and Edwards
v
Home Guernsey- Kerr, Banfield, Braun, Seaby, Adkins, Chick, Jones, Lynch, Jakovich, Sampi, Embley, Rudeforth, Green, Embley, Graham, Humm
Cousins, Gardiner, Gaspar, Chambers, Collica, Glass, Hansen, Selwood, Jones, Hunter and Carroll did not play.
The Outcome- Away team beat the home team by a very comfortable margin. McConnell copped a hamstring injury, Chick apparently got a minor thigh strain or corky.

The Good.
Wow. I suppose its difficult to know what exactly it is that you can take out of an Intraclub- I mean, you can hardly walk away excited because your team wiped the floor with... your team. In general terms though, what today did was left me absolutely desperate for the real season to begin. On the basis of what I saw, a lot of my worries about this year are gone, and I can't help but think that we are going to surprise a lot of people this season.

-Away Team-
First off, Chris Judd was absolutely outstanding, awesome, superb, or whatever other positive adjective you feel like inserting there. All the talk about him this preseason appears to be true- he really does look to have grown a couple of cm and is certainly much beefier looking- he's actually a dead ringer for Milli now! Basically, he won a nearly all of the contested ball on offer, and breezed his way through the midfield all day. The thing which impressed me most, was that rather than doing a few freakishly good things, he was the dominant on ball player all day and never stopped finding the ball. Ended up with 2 goals kicked in typical Chris Judd fashion, an absolute bundle of possessions, and probably dramatically shortened brownlow odds.

Cox dominated the ruck all day and was excellent around the ground, alongside Judd, Nicoski and Wooden provided good support in the midfield, whilst Fletcher got better as the game went on.

McDougall was the standout forward on the ground, and basically embarassed everyone who was on him. Took a lot of marks including a few outstanding contested grabs in the middle of packs, and kicked 4 (i think) goals. Really liked his game, and left me pretty excited about his future this year. As others have mentioned Aaron Edwards was an enormous surprise packet on the half forward flank- he kicked 2 goals, and impressed with strong marking, great vision, and silky skills onthe ground. On the basis of that effort, he may very well find his way into the seniors this year, and will almost certainly book himself a spot in the Round 1 Wiz cup team. Matera was his usual dangerous self (despite apparently not being supposed to play)

In defence, Staker was very good indeed. I was actually very surprised at how much he has beefed up- he played at CHB mostly against Lynch, and handled himself well in the one on one duels, took a lot of marks, and pushed forward and kicked a goal late in the game. Actually, on the basis of this game, a pretty big weight is lifted off my mind in terms of where our key defenders will come from- on the basis of this game, I think Staker will be a pretty decent defensive option this year. Wirrpunda was also definitely amongst the best afield- he has slimmed down noticeably, and seems much lighter and quicker on his feet. Wirra was mopping up absolutely everything in defence, and also took a number of excellent pack marks.

Finally, the new boy Beau Waters was definitely thrown in the deep end starting on the HBF opposed to a very fit and in form Chick. The two fought a very entertaining and inconclusive draw, but Waters showed some very good signs- was great in and under, disposed of it well under pressure, and slapped some huge tackles on Chick (and also received more than his fair share!)

-Home Team-
Chick was wonderful for the home team. When played up forward on Waters, he never really got on top, but when on-ball, he seems to have found an extra yard of pace, and, no surprises here, his tackling was excellent, even running down Judd on a couple of occasions (the only guy to get near him all day) Embers was also good in the midfield without ever really breaking the game apart, and Braun and Jones picked up a few good touchs.

Up forward, the home team never really found a target. Lynch, who played at CHF, was well held by Staker when in attack, but when moved onto the ball, he rucked okay. Sampi had a few good touches, and took one outstanding mark, but was well and truly shaded by Wirrpunda (who in all fairness to Samps, was in absolute red-hot form) I actually also liked the look of Michael Embley (aka Embers Junior), who, whilst only picking up a few touches, moved very well for a big man, and used the ball nicely when he had it.

If had to give 5-4-3-2-1 votes for the game, i'd probably go
5. Judd (by a long way)
4. Mcdougall
3. Wirrpunda
2. Staker
1. Edwards

The Bad

-Away Team-
Munro failed to ever really get into the game, and still looked VERY skinny. I'm beginning to wonder if he has tapeworms or something. Morrison took some time to get into the game, and perhaps looked a bit out of sorts. He certainly finished better than he started. Fletcher, despite finding a lot of the pill, kicked wastefully on goal, and, predictably, had difficulties when forced to kick with his right. Paul Johnson wasn't that bad at CHF, but he never really hit his stride or looked comfortable, and failed to have much of an impact.

-Home Team-
I wouldn't count on Seaby displacing Cox just yet, as, from where I was sitting, Big Dean took Not Quite So Big Mark to ruckman school with a thoroughly dominant performance. Seaby did put together a few good touches and the occasional decent knock, but for the most part was well and truly shaded. Kerr played half a game with minimal impact, Rudeforth, and then Banfield were beaten soundly by Edwards whilst Jakovich and Graham struggled to contain the rampant McDougall. Adkins and Humm did little.

The Ugly

No huge injury concerns, but Daniel McConnell's first run was cut short with a rather bad looking hamstring strain, and Chick apparently strained his thigh/copped a corky, but seemed to pretty much play out the game.

Actually, I was stressing badly about possible injuries, something which wasn't helped by Hay doing his knee in the Hawks intraclub. Halfway through the game I was getting very very tense every time Judd or McDougall was involved in a collision, and the hard tackling on display wasn't helping matters. Quentin Lynch in particular showed a nasty predilection for picking up and dumping his smaller, more highly priced teammates when tackling. All things considered, I'm thinking its probably for the best that Cousins and Gardy sat this one out- no point in tempting fate.

Finally, it was embarassingly difficult to keep track of just how many new faces there were out on the field, with McConnell, Waters, Butler, Embley jnr and Graham suiting up for the first time ever, whilst rarely sighted rookies from last year, like Edwards Rudeforth and Beeck were also on the field. As EKA observed, there was actually a certain guilty pleasure in yelling 'Come on #45!' in stereotypical Chardonnay sipping fashion.

Apologies for the lack of photos, because a certain Eagle Fan who will remain nameless decided that earning a livelihood and driving under the speed limit were more important than the footy.

Anyway, thats it for now. Watch this space for the Book of Woosha later tonight.

Excellent summary... but I can't agree with Waters..... I was boundary side on the wing.... and watched from metres away on at least 4 occassions where Chick just pushed him off... and ran rings around him.... you could see he was struggling... buts thats to be expected because Chick is one of the most professional players at the club.... and thats why Woosha put Waters on him.... so he could learn... but you can see Waters just never gives up.

And on that note, I'd like to send a shout out to the animals that held up said place of livelihood, for the second time in 6 months. Lucky for me I was at our other store today, but then I had my fun last time.

Anyway, petty crims aside, I will definately there, camera in tow, next week. :)

Great GBU as always Mead, much appreciated ;)

Well here seems as good a place as any to showcase my pride and joy for this year- Presenting.....

.I'm planning a BOW edition like this on a fortnightly basis throughout the season. And yes, I realise I have serious mental problems.

I suppose it really comes down to a matter of perspective- From where I was sitting (and from the sounds of it, I think i might have been in your block,) I was pretty happy with Waters' game, but I don't reallly disagree with what you're saying.
Chick certainly outmuscled Waters and beat him on occasions, which isn't really surprising, given that Chick has previously tossed players such as Pavlich around like rag doll- but I just felt that Waters limited him as well as somebody in his situation could have- Chick never really broke the game apart or kicked a decent score the way you'd expect a forward to when they are totally on top of their man. Great determination from Waters, I thought- just kept on coming at him, and towards the end of the game he seemed to be handling the matchup far better. I'll be interested to see if Worsfold gives him a similar assignment next week- certainly, making your debut against someone like Chick in white hot form is a steep learning curve for a rookie.

Nice work Mead...I look forward to the GBU and BOW every week. The new BOW with all the trimmings is even better than last year which I didnt think could happen.

I think we need a BOW thread, a sticky if you will. With the history of BOW from it's beginnings to now and then as the season goes on just keep adding to it. What you think? Oh...isnt the BOW going on the website? I dont know...

thanks for the update people. it's good to hear some news about the progress we are making this year.

very unaustralian of you to go to the footy when australia is playing in the one day finals though. ;)

That was hell funny! I look foward to seeing more to come :D

I also went to the scatch match, and I thought Waters was ok for a rookie but Chicky did get the better of him. (and we were right near them too)

Yeah its hard to say... I probably spent more than 50% of the game just watching Waters.... and you could see at times he was going to get into trouble... with Chick getting him under the ball etc.. but then again how do you know.... is it just a case of Chick being on fire or Waters being off his game? I tend to think it was more Chick looking sensational... but thats a good thing... because Waters playing on guys like that... is just going to make him more hungry to succeed.

Same with Dean Cox... he dominated the ruck over Marcus Seaby.... I had seen Seaby play a few WAFL games last year so I know he can play..... but you're just not sure if it was Seaby struggling to come up to the level or Dean Cox improving out of sight... Cox definately looks bigger... and I'm just hoping it was more a case of him improving over summer than Seaby not being up to it.

One thing I do know.... if it was biologically possible I would want to have Chris Judd's children.... in one of the earlier posts someone mentioned that Judd looked as good as he has previous seasons..... but now he was able to keep it going continously for a whole match... rather than in and out.... thats a perfect summation of how he looked. I'll say now... he will have at least 4 games this year where he will pick up 40+ possessions.

god i can't wait for this season to start.

sounds absolutely mouth watering.

But i don't know whether its a good things that Doogs carved up so much, because we definetaly need some tall backs to stand up this year.

Thanks Mead

Great effort Mead. The GBU and BOW was well worth waiting for.

My impressions of the game.

Juddy - agree with everything said about him. He looks fantastic

McDoogs - I came home and said to my family to take a note of the date and my prediction that Doogs is goiing to be an absolute star.

Chicky - looks fit and faster than last year. Huge job for Waters but he tried extremely hard and has a good body size for a kid.

Coxxxy - Rucked superbly. A few of his taps down Fletcher's throat were carbon copies of Gardy to Ben last year.

Staker - I quite liked him up forward - his ruck knock to Juddy for a goal was classic

Fletch and Brauny - both ran and ran and looked supremely fit

Gaspar and Glass - both ran laps and then were waterboys for the game.

Nicoski - I haven't really taken much notice of him (being a Subi player and all) but I was very impressed.

Zac Beeck - played as a backman - maybe he is being groomed for a KPP backman?

Jaymie Grayham - a rookie list player (wearing number 50). Very tall - at first I thought Coxxxy had changed his number. Believe me, there is no shortage of height in this squad!

Aaron Edwards - very, very impressive. However, I think he is a rookie list player so we won't see him unless we encounter a long term injury (heaven forbid). He is also the player that the club is thinking of moving from the Garlicmunchers and I hope he comes to the Royals, I'm sure we would make him very welcome
:D .

Lynch - Beaten by Staker, still can't kick straight - nothings changed.

Callum - Did not play, wearing the yellow injured player jumper, but in the warmup I think it was him wearing number 24. Probably not a good move Callum - we know what happened to the last number 24.

Huntaaa - Also in the yellow jumper but I was a bit concerned as he did not even run the water during the game. Does anyone know what his injury is ?

All in all, I can't wait for the season. It is going to be a very exciting year for the followers of the great Woosha and his men!!

A good read Mead. And the BOW is better than Saturday's Alston in the Worst!

I am looking forward to watching some Judd magic this year... just so long as he has quiet games against us. :)

There's never been a lack of height, it's more a lack of dominant key position players, which I hope will stand up for us this season.

Still one cannot be to critical, as our KPP's are all relatively young.

Great work Mead, and really helpfull as i wasnt able to make it to the session.

Lots of tests ahead for the youngsters, which is all good and part of the learning curve.

In a word how I'm feeling at the moment .......

************* EXCITED *************

Well, I agree with most of Meads assesment although both Barra (who we were sitting next to) and i thought it was Michael Embley that did a hammy (who then went on to ch7 to say up front we had no injuries :) ). Neither of us knew who was wearing 50 either so thanks for info Vicki.

I guess I thought it was all about match ups. A good experienced player v a rookie is usually going to look fantastic.

Cox murdered Seaby in the ruck and gave his side first use often, Lynch tamed him a little later by using body but Cox has bulked and can handle it. My thought, though was how would Cox have gone against a fit Gardy? I doubt if Seaby will get agame this season on this performance. Same goes for Lynch who I was hoping to see big improvements, but not to be.
Doogs and Staker were IMO the big improvers, Doogs has clearly been coached into FF and his leads were imprssive. He may have had a few more goals too. He kicked one off two steps from 60m.
Judd was awesome and I thought Fletcher was great too. Kerr came on for the last third and his speed against the tired players was awesome. Edwards showed huge potential and I can see him getting a game. Nicoski too. Jako and Morrisson are on restricted programs so their fitness levels were not up to the rest, however I thought both did very well, particularly Jako early on. Chick was very good (skinhead) and the Waters match up was good. Waters is a type of hard player we are missing and looks good. Braun was okay but I thought Wooden was better out of the middle (although he did make two bad disposal errors). Banners seemed a bit underdone. Wirra looked fitter than ever. Sampi did a bit but I don't think treated it as seriously as others. Adkins looked a bit beefier and showed good skills at times. Beeck showed promise although I don't know where he's fit in.
Munro didn't seem to get in the game. Embers was good and his brother showed he had a bit. Fido was fit and sharp.

All in all a very encouraging night and enjoyable too. We may have a Matty Lloyd on our hands with Doogs and a very good CHB with Staker (although I'd bet on Staker at FB and Jako CHB until Glass is ready), Judd is looking awesome and our midfield will be better this year than last year. Edwards could be the surprise package, the boy has a ton of skills, speed and height.

That's about all I can recall. A few players I didn't recognise and some like Rudeforth didn't seem to have enough touches to make a call.

I heard John McGrath phone in his report to the West after the game. He seemed to be stoked about Staker.

Barra sums the Eagles chances up as being about the spine. If a couple of tall stand up he reckons we'll do very well. But replacing Milli and Jako are the key. I tend to agree with him but I think with Staker we have one of the two, and Doogs will certainly make a good FF.

Superb work Mead.

I always thought the inside of Woosha's head would be like God's celestial Marlows, though.

That's very possible, but see, I had a picture of Andrew Embley's head on a giant turkey's body which I was desperate to find an excuse to use. (its partly visible lower left hand corner of 'woosha's mind') I'm not sure where that would fit in the Marlow's catalog.

Anyway, i'm glad everyone seems to like it, so far!

I don't think we have lacked key position players... its just our best ones Mcdougall and Gaspar have been basically injured for the last 3 years. Its a big call but I think Mcdougall and Gaspar are as good as Reiwoldt and Kocrapske.... and its sad that they havent been able to show it yet because of injury.

There is always a very good reason why Woosha got rid of Troy Wilson and David Haynes who were KPPs.... because these 2 would never have gotten a game if McDougall and Gaspar were fit.

Who was on Macdoogal?

Jaymie Grayham was on McDougall but wasn't very effective. Doogs seemed to have the upper hand and was leading and marking very well.

If Judd had a tag, I've since forgotten who it was because no one got close to him all day!

Waters was right infront of us, but I was trying to watch Staker as well, but the glimpses I caught of him, Chick was kinda pushing him out the way. But Chick is a hard guy, so Waters was going to have a difficult job anyway. Waters will get better as the season goes on, but I don't think he's ready just yet. I'm expecting him to make his debut this year, but probably in the 2nd half of the season.

I was kinda expecting Seaby to do a bit better, but seeing as he hasn't played in the AFL, he's at a bit of a disadvantage. Cox walked all over him, Lynch may have been a bit better, Seaby still kinda looks a bit skinny. I know Seaby can get the job done, he couldn't have finished in the top 5 in the Sandover count for nothing, but maybe he'll be better as a long term prospect, like when Gardy and Cox are aging.
