Quote by Colin Wisbey re. Baird.

Quote:
I was pleased he was rookied although ...

... I would not have rookied him myself. Good kid.

Handy TAC form but I just struggled to see a specific AFL role for him.

I concede he was possibly carrying a niggle (maybe O.P.? - I can't recall). He was often rested on the bench in games. Bottom line though is that in '04 he played 16 TAC games plus a VC trial and the Allies game, missing only 2 isolated TAC games and, statistically, got over 19 disposals in 3 games and under 9 disposals in 3 games. Not that stats are everything but I felt that, although good overhead and not particularly fit (for whatever reason), he needed to show more for an "in-between height" guy whose pace displayed last year was barely borderline, whose kicking was not bad but not great, and who was not flash below the knee. Seems a good team man and nice kid and was on my list for quite a while but dropped off it by end of season.

On the Brisbane board they said that he was not in fact delisted, but was offered a one year deal to stay on the rookie list. Apparently a few other clubs told him they would take him on the main list in the national draft, so he left.

It makes me feel a lot better. I'd feel a bit wierd about taking a guy who had been dropped from another team's rookie list with a third rounder.

Yeah. I'm with you on that one.

After reading that from Batman, and his profile that was on Brisbane's website (I think it was?) he doesn't sound THAT bad. Sounds worth a risk, and possibly a handy player.

What would his position be though? Wing, HBF?

This is from the Brisbane website.

Something of a "smokey" pick in the 2004 rookie draft, Baird repaid the faith of the Lions' recruiting staff in 2005 with some outstanding performances in the AFLQ, senior elevation and a pair of AFL games.

The 19-year-old started the season playing in defence for the Suncoast Lions but it was during stints up forward and in the midfield that he really showed the talent that resulted in him being promoted to the senior list, when Martin Pike went down with a long-term injury. Baird was called up straight into the senior side for the Round 19 win over Hawthorn and kicked a great goal on the run from 45m with one of his early touches. He retained his spot in the team for the Round 20 trip to Sydney.

Hailing from the Victorian country town of Donald, Baird was considered highly enough by the Lions recruiting team for them to move away from the usual practice of rookie listing all Queenslanders. He had suffered an injury-interrupted 2004, which impacted on his chances in the National Draft, but can play in a number of positions, takes a strong mark, and is a well skilled on both sides of the body.

Looks like a versatile midfielder / HFF. Can play good footy in the lower levels, but needs to take the next step.

Not to mention a team that finished lower than us.

I remember watching an interview on tv with martin Pike and Pike said he was the best Brisbane young player he has seen for a while. He stated that he was a great talent.

Hopefully Pike meant playing talent and not going out and getting ********ed talent.

I remember him playing for the Lions on the few occasions he was given in 2004, and I must say that I was fairly impressed. When I heard his name called out, I was stunned, confused, yet excited.

I can't help but add to a rather depressing list, though.

Trent Bartlett
Shannon Rusca
Marcus Picken
Travis Baird (hopefully not a reject)

Any other Brisbane rejects that I have left out? Have we ever had any good Brisbane recruits, because I seriously cannot think of one.

I saw that in the paper today. The player profile has him at 189cm but the paper had him at 193cm.The fact that he played senior footy last year and is still only young at 19 already puts him ahead of our young talls doesn't it?

Yep.

I feel better about him being 193cm. if he put on 4cm last year, he will be skinny as hell though. have to wait for him to fill out.

apparently he wasnt rejected by brisbane, he just sought a beter deal than the continuation of the rookie deal they offered him.

more to this selection than meets the eye.

Just looking through a couple of the Brisbane Lions fan sites and it seems he started the year as a midfielder for his QFL side and then rotated between FF and FB for the rest of the year.Apparently likes throwing himself at marks and doesn't mind having a crack at a speccy.Played the latter part of the year with a shoulder problem.

Can't blame a bloke for that.

He played two senior games during the season and yet the Lions thought he would prefer to stay on the rookie list. My understanding is that the Pies were keen to snare him in the PSD.

It might be a case of the Lions wanting to keep him but not being able to fit him in due to salary cap restrictions. I've heard a lot about their cap problems & it's no surprise to see them turning to international Irish rookies to solve some of their problems.

I think it is more of a case that they just thought he would stick with them regardless and when Baird was contacted by a couple of clubs he thought he had better chances elsewhere.

At first I thought we had drafter that ****** from the kangaroo's.

This kid sounds interesting, onloy 19 and has grown a a hell of alot over the past couple years. This could be the pick of the draft, that might sound funny, but it might turn out in our favour for once. Leigh Matthews would not want him for another year if they didn't think he could play.

I too thought we had picked up that guy from the Roos when I first saw it. Thank god we didn't lol.

But yeah - Baird is sounding more interesting by the minute. 19 years old, played in various positions, been under Matthews and has played two games. So he has a bit of "experience" behind him in a way, if you know what I'm getting at. More so than most 19 year olds.

If he's really grown to 193cm, that is terrific, and no wonder we've jumped at him.

It's actually quite exciting. Could be a player. What is the height required to play a KP usually?

Full forward. 5ft 11 (Johnson, Brown)
Centre half forward 6ft 1 (Murphy)

Usually a key position player is roughly 192 cm and above. Bowden was 190cm and really struggled to hold down a KP. Aparantly Baird is very athletic so it will be interesting. I dont think is a bustling type player like jonathon brown more of a Kouta type player, can play big or small!! A hard match up especially now we have darcy back in the forward line.
