I've been out of the country for a month, now I'm back & want one. I'm currently with Telstra but I know they have relatively shit data packages.

Hey everyone, don't wanna be annoying but was wondering if anyone could help me with some questions about the iphone?

Until the other day, I had an ipod touch, however unfortunately i accidentally jammed it under a door, and the screen didn't like that..

Anyway I had sort of wanted an iphone and i decided that rather just get an itouch again i should get an iphone, as my current phone is stuffed as well.

My problem is that i'd rather not be bothered with contracts etc at my age (17) and don't want an annoying contract to worry about at the moment. So i have been reading up on getting it prepaid, but seems that it's not that easy.

Can't i just buy the phone from the apple online store or something, get my telstra prepaid sim and put it in and go? The issue then I guess is that the internet would suck up my credit like no tomorrow, yeah? So has anyone got any suggestions/advice? thanks anyway

You would have to buy outright if you want to use your own. Outright will mean you can put any carrier in it, so it wouldn't matter who your with.

There are ways so you can disable all incoming internet connections (3G + GPRS) so it won't kill your credit.

The problem buying a phone outright is that it is a huge up front cost and that is without facing the outrageous prepaid costs.

Don't be too scared away by contracts because the only people that get caught out are ones buying really shit phones which won't last the distance. Therefore having to get new phones on new contracts while still paying off the old one. The iPhone will last 2 years especially considering the ability to completely restore the phone and constant updates.

Anyway what I'm saying is that you will get a much better deal by going on a plan especially considering the data packages you can get with them. One of the iPhones best features is how it deals with using the internet and specialised mobile websites. If you do choose a plan go with Vodafone or Optus because Telstra's new 3GS packages are shithouse!

I have the 3g iPhone and used redsnow.

I'm not sure how you do it with the new 3GS, but with the 3G, you go to cydia, add a source and find a program called mobile installation patch. There's a new program for the 3.0 update so you'll need to get that. Then when that's done, get a free app from the itunes store, sync your phone then after that, download a cracked app and it'll sync it self onto your phone.

Hmmm....love the smell of a new phone. My silent switch was ****ed, as well as having about 10 5mm depp scratches on the back, and the top sleep button being ****ed as well...headed down to the ole Genius Bar, in and out within 10 minutes with a brand new 3G.

Too bad now it won't ****ing restore to 3.0 with iTunes...stubborn pos

FWIW, I was having the same issue with my iPhone today. Was on the phone to Apple for 2.5 hrs and we tried everything. In the end, they said head to the Apple store and they will take care of it.

In a last attempt, i reformatted my computer and reinstalled itunes and it restored.

Yeah, I have reinstalled everything to do with iTunes and Apple about 5 times now.

Resorted to downloading anthor 3.0 file to see how it goes...most likely a waste of 250mb.

Also downloaded a couple of cricket apps last night for the start of The Ashes. I'll watch a fair bit of it on TV, but this is awesome if you're lying in bed and CBF or want a quick summary in the morning.

I paid about $2 for VirtualCricket which is pretty awesome and has some great reviews.

Then I found Mobicast (Crickinfo) for free just moments later. It's got some pretty terrible reviews but having used it briefly, I find it okay.

Check them out in the app store under "Categories ---> Sports".

Don't know if it's the same on iphone but is mobicast just ball by ball commentary?

If so, it's okay but not great. Really behind in the updates. It's best just to get opera mini and go on the cricinfo website.

I got my 1st IPhone today the 32GB 3GS and i must say after having nothing but Nokias i was a bit sceptical about them but all my worries have been put to bed and this phone ROCKS!!

I love it and it is an awesome piece of technology. I got it for free with an Upgrade from Optus after the contract on my N95 just expired.

I have a few apps on it with Shazam and some good games that were free also. I dont really know if i should Jailbreak it as for what i need the phone is awesome as it is and i no longer have the need for my I Pod
