An interesting article in The Age this morning. Looks like the Tigers might have an Irishman on the list next year.

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/ne...-their-afl-luck/2008/11/08/1225561205584.html

Meredith, 18, will trial for a week each with North Melbourne and Richmond, while 17-year-old McKeever will trial for a week each with Richmond and St Kilda.

Richmond football manager Craig Cameron said the Tigers were excited about the opportunity of signing their first international rookie. "We had a look at them over there in August. Now in Australia we want to see how they shape up compared to our guys, have our coaches and fitness guys look over them and see if they've got the requisite skill and athletic attributes," he said. "But also to give them a taste of what Australia and life as an AFL footballer is like.
"We are working out whether Ireland is going to become a long-term recruiting market for us and this is only our first step in the process."

Meath’s Padraig McKeever received the ‘Man of the match’ award on a night when there were many from both teams with a strong case for the honour.

I think thats Mckeever

theres a right up of the under 16 match he was in, but it basically says he was the only one to "find the back of the net" and he got man of the match.

Don't like the idea. What about all the kids who have grown up living and breathing football for 18 years? We are going to try and grab a player who has never even played the game

Sante it's the 00's. You don't pick AFL footballers to play AFL, **** no....what as stupid idea.
That's 70's and 80's thinking. To be picked to play AFL nowadays you have to have played Gaelic/Basketball/Ice Hockey/Greco Roman Wrestling and have only ever got interested in AFL when you looked it up on Wikipedia after a club pushed a wad of cash into your face.
