Is anyone else hurting?

I'm hurting. And it's not because its late, and I've had too much to drink. Look at that grammar, ****ing beautiful.

Three years we've had now of what is pretty sub-standard football, littered by errors, players not putting in and the media sinking the boots in too.

I want to see the light at the end of the tunnel, show me it please Dean because we can only get flogged week in, week out for so long.

Not to put pressure on you Jack, but if you're only average, we're going to be stuck down here for a long long time.

I'm so sick of losing.

****ing win please.

Now.

we won't win a game untill Robbo is back and can find some form for himself and our mate Brock. Untill then too much left to too few and structural problems too severe. Can't wait for Robo, Grimes, Maric to cement 22 spots. Chin Up BC, have another drink ;)

One things for sure we won't win any games while our Key Forward marks inside fifty and his most creative option is to pass off to Cameron Bruce.
That was classic Miller. If Junior had been around he would have been the second choice.

That especially pissed me off. He's meant to be our key forward and he has no confidence in his kicking.

hurting? Yes, we're paying for not having a footy based club for years, Administrators hiring people who said they new what they we're doing, but in fact didn't.
This game is built on physical committment, chasing hard, tackling hard, intense effort, 1% s, Getting the ball & effective use, but most of all, Talent, Talent, Talent. This is what we're in the process of fixing now.

He passed to apparently one of our best players who was in a better position and bruce fluffed it. That is the reason Bruce aint captain. Miller will hopefully learn to back himself.

Wasn't Greeny right there also?

If he was aiming for Green, then he was doing the right thing. Bruce just happened to get in the way.

point 1-
I would rather us bottom out for 3-5 years and build a potential premiership winning team. Rather than do what we normally do of 1 year up, 1 year down, just making up the numbers in the 8.

point 2-
Did anyone actually expect us to beat collingwood or Port???.
last year we got flogged right from the opening bounce. At least this year we can put a good half together. it's not great but still better than last year.

point 3-
We need a key forward dominate games. Bate is a very good third tall in a team but we have no one to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
However i like our backline and think our midfield is improving.

point 4-
Why all the negativity on Bruce???. he has been one of our top line players for close to 10 years now and all he gets it crap of you guys on BF.

not hurting at all. actually enjoying the fact at how good we will be in 24 months. got to go backwards to go forwards and it happens to everyone except richmond. patience my friends patience. think of the reward after round 22

It is painful to experience so many losses (39 out of the last 47), but you have to look at things in perspective. Our list in 2006 was solid, but not premiership material. Sure, it's nice to win matches and play in finals, but if it doesn't lead you to a Grand Final then it's all for nothing. We're actually closer to a premiership in 2009 than we were in 2006. And we are much more competitive than we were in 2008.

I get as frustrated as anyone when watching us lose, but when you get the chance to sit back and assess our situation, you realise that you just have to be patient. The following is a basic five-step guide to rebuilding a list for a crack at the flag.

1. High draft picks and young players.
2. Development and improvement.
3. Winning games and making finals.
4. Becoming a top four contender.
5. Winning the premiership.

The first step is basically complete. We've got the high draft picks (the last two drafts have yielded 6 players in the top 21). We've also got plenty more promising young players (31 players are under the age of 23).

The next step is what we are about to enter in 2009-2010. Already, we've shown some signs of improvement, both in our game plan, our structure, and our results. I would expect us to reach the third step by 2011-2012. After that, it comes down to coaching, list management, personal development, and luck.

Take Hawthorn for example. They probably reached the final step a year or two earlier than expected, but they are proof that the rebuild can work.

Step 1: 2004-05
Step 2: 2005-06
Step 3: 2007
Step 4: 2008
Step 5: 2008-11

Carlton:

Step 1: 2005-07
Step 2: 2008
Step 3: 2009
Step 4: 2010-11
Step 5: 2010-13

Melbourne:

Step 1: 2007-09
Step 2: 2009-10
Step 3: 2011-12
Step 4: 2013
Step 5: 2014-16

Scully would be ideal, especially since our kicking is something that we
need to improve - and Scully is a great kick!

But, for the moment, Im enjoying watching the likes of Bennell and
Jetta - and tracking their progress, Bennell is going to be a great
player, Im very impressed with him.

Id like to see more of Maric - can anyone fill me in on his progress, im
stuck up in WA atm - out of touch with things..

Grimes? I know he has an injury of some sort - anyone know what? and
how long he will be out for, hope its not his back..
Grimes our next captain, kids got game - and serious game.

I'm with you brother. Draft picks 1 and 2 are looking good to me.

This all sounds ok on paper but we are handicapped by our football department infrastructure. I know we have Casey as a new off season venue and facilities at OP but it will take time to get the full benefit of that on a season long basis. We also have to extend the wealth of talent we have staff wise in the footy department with more specialist coaches and analysts. In the article about MFC possibly making a profit this year Schwab specifically stated how we need to reinvest in our infrastructure. Unless we do then we can't be compared to Hawthorn or Carlton too much other than the experience of our playing group and the acquisition of talented youth.

I'm tired of hearing this rebuilding rubbish and people actually accepting it! Go back to the reason why you watch footy, follow a team and buy a membership? Life is simply too short to accept it. I watch sides over here like the Adelaide Crows and Port Power rebuild and stay competitive at the same time and then watch us totally bomb out and play kids whos confidence simply gets smashed to pieces by kids their own age in opposition teams. I was at AAMI Sunday and that was a perfect example of Ports youth V our youth.

i agree lets win 6 games and get pick 4 JUST before GC come in. good thinkin. Facts are we aint good enough to win games yet so dont accuse me of tanking but we'd be the but of jokes from every fan of every other AFL side if we ****ed up this opportunity AGAIN. AS stated from former club greats ala G.Lyon, would not be to dis heartened to see us hold up the ladder again. everyone of u should remind yourself again watt GC's picks we be in 2010 draft. until then 3 games and a 20 point average loss is good enough for me in this day and age

So basically you'd rather lose than win? :o

You know what I'm sick of? People that go to the footy undecided of whether they should support our boys or barrack for the other team. You play footy to win games. As stated earlier, you don't need high draft picks to rebuild. I want Melbourne to win at all costs, every game, every year.

Mate, I'm accepting it only because there is nothing else to accept. We're shit! Everyone knows that, no one is denying it. But am I going to sit here and cry about it, or should I try to find the positives in this tough situation?

Footy runs in cycles, and at the moment we are down the bottom of the cycle. Yeah, it sounds like a cliche, but it's also the truth. We were a regular finalist from 2002-2006, now our list has been turned over and we have to start again.

Some teams are able to avoid 'bottoming out', such as Adelaide, Sydney, Geelong, etc... but unfortunately we were unable to. Does that mean that things will never turn around, or that we are destined to stay at the bottom for the next 50 years? No, of course not. We'll get our time in the sun, but we as fans simply have to be patient and continue supporting the club as much as we can.

Exactly, compare that with Colin Sylvia or worse, Richard Tambling.

It's a lottery.

We can only hope that as the clubs fortunes begin to turn favourably off-field, that it translates to better support and management of our players. As I said in my post, drafting and blooding kids is only the first couple of steps. Once you get to a certain point, there are other factors which come in to play.

However, let's not forget that we did manage to make a Grand Final in 2000. North Melbourne won premierships in 1996 and 1999. St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs have been in preliminary finals in 1997, 1998, 2004, 2005 and 2008. None of these clubs have been blessed with money, yet have still done quite well on field (at times).

Well said! I'm not paying money to fly to Melbourne or drive to AAMI to watch what I saw yesterday. No excuses! We should be fielding our strongest team every week and like competitive sides introduce a first/second year draftee occasionally. Experienced heads always wins games!
