Can't handle the pressure of expectations and choking at the final hurdle. Sad but probably true. Is it finally time for Greg to hand the title of Australia's biggest choker over to Cadel?

PS: This isn't a troll thread, I wanted Cadel to win as much as anybody. I'm after serious discussion.

when was the last time you saw Norman ride a bike up a 15+km HC climb & back it up the next day with another 160+km ride? and do it for 21 days with only 2 days off? Evans still did a faster time trial than Sastre yesterday, just that Sastre also rode a pretty decent TT too.

its a phenomenal effort but choking is not what happened, simple fact of the matter is that he ran out of steam, which is totally understanable after the efforts he's put in over the last 3 weeks...and don't forget he clawed his way back from 4th to 2nd.

You could tell before he even pulled out of the gates last night there was nothing left in the tank. He looked like he was in a whole lot of pain for the entire stage.

The thing to remember too is that the fellow that won it also had far and away the best team helping him, whereas Evans was fighting pretty much a lone battle the whole time. His crash, while not as serious as it could have been, also proved costly as we came down to the wire.

Ease up on Greg Norman too. Sure, he did blow a couple of majors, but he was also on the recieving end of at least four of the gretest shots that have ever been played at a major tournament.

Cadel will never win if he nevers gets a decent team to support him. I don't understand how it works, but given that he'd finished 8th, 4th and 2nd prior to this year, how come that potential wasn't rewarded with the support of a good team?

You don't happen to work for The Times do you?

"it may be a little unfair to think of Cadel Evans as cycling's equivalent of Greg Norman, but..."

Of course the answer is no: Cadel rode a week in the Alps, by himself, fending off great attacking climbing from the Schlecks, fierce pace-setting from Voigt and the great tactical move of hiding and preserving team leader Sastre. In the end Sastre only had to make one attack, up l'Alp d'Huez, after his team spent the last two weeks of the tour physically destroying Evans. The real question that should be being asked is what happened to Popovych - supposed domestique extraordinaire?

Not sure how you compare choking in golf to choking in cycling.

Do all the other 100m runners choke because Usain Bolt beats them?

Chances are that if this wasn't a team sport ... in the sense you can ride in groups, form strategies, wind streamline protection (etc. ... i have nfi with the terminology) then he would've won the TdF last year and possibly the year before.

Biggest solo effort going around

Completely different:

- Norman was heads above everyone else for a long time, the clearly dominant sportsman in his field at the time, yet failed at the majors

- Cycling is a team support and Evans was only favourite for one year and managed to come 2nd that year by about a minute (close). The year before he lost by about 23 seconds. Both years Contador and Sastre had far superior teams to what Evans had. Most likely if it was simply a one man event, Evans would've won both years
