Is ducking to draw the free a blight on the game

Last night we reached peak Selwood. He now instinctively lowers the body and leans into opposition the moment he gets the ball even when he is on his own.

The ducking/lowering/shrugging/arm raising epidemic is a modern day disgrace in the game and it all started in 2007 with Selwood. Today there are well over 50 players across every team in the competition that do it regularly - there would be none if it wasn't for Selwood. That is his legacy and his alone.

Would be none if AFL got umps to not pay them.

Part of the ducking is also eyes firmly on the umpire appealing at the slightest contact during the tackle

He seriously good at it though. It's split second s**t. It's weird that I say this but it's almost his greatest talent!
If you watch the first quarter the Crows seemed to bump into him first get him to duck and roll then tackle,he adjusted his timing after quarter time or the umps just started paying them regardless

Poor tackling technique, Awaken tick.

I agree that poor tackling technique is a problem, tackle them around the waist area and ducking is not required.

One thing with the "leading with your head" technique, is that one day a player is going to get compressed discs in their neck or worse.

Also using the rules to your advantage isn't cheating.

Hawthorn didn't cheat in 2008 by rushing behinds.

James Harden doesn't cheat by drawing fouls to get free throws.

Charles Barkley didn't cheat by backing down players.

Durant with the rip though, Iverson with palming the ball, Mikan, Chamberlain etc

All players who used rules to their advantage until they had to be changed. None of them were cheaters though.

Lance Armstrong cheated, Jon Jones cheated, Ben Johnson, Tyson Gay, all cheaters.

This is par for the course, the cats and their fans know that at some point they're going to receive a soft free in front of goal, to get them a nice easy forward 50 entry or to get them out of trouble. Their constant whining to the umps has got completely into the umps' heads. It's really sad.

The Crows had all the momentum and then 2 umpiring decisions led to two goals in a minute for the Cats and all of a sudden they got a run on.

Was clear as day that they got a spring in their step when the usual umpiring howlers started going their way.

He cheats because he abuses a rule designed to protect players safety.

Matthew Lloyd cheated when he flopped in the marking contests to draw free kicks.

Selwood cheats by charging with his head into the arm or dropping his knees to draw high contact.

Take your Geelong hat off.

I'm over it. I have no idea why Cats supporters stick up for him. It was so obvious last night

Seriously, I actually don't mind the Cats but the ducking is just f**ked

Genuinely it's all he's got now. And maybe all he's ever had.

When the heat is on, draw a free kick. Inspire your team by conning the umpires.

No, he's a champion of the game and you're an idiot if you think otherwise.
No he's really not. The Lloyd comparison is a great one. Great player - but free kick drawing tactics across an entire career removes you from the champion category.

Champions don't spend a career perfecting how to draw free kicks. That's not a champion thing to do, yet it is the thing that people most readily associate with selwood.

It's not a great rule to exploit though. It's dangerous and has encouraged a whole bunch of dumb kids, including at Hawthorn, to give it a go.
