Is JK kicking 8 goals...

In his final game the greatest thing you have ever seen?

It's right up there for me in terms of Aussie sporting achievements.

Bradbury, Freeman winning the 400m in her spacesuit, Rhino knocking over Steyn and Morkel in 2014 at Cape Town.

Just loving recalling JK giving us so much over the journey, with a hell of a final salute!

Freeman's career wasn't anything exceptional. Never held a world record. Won 1 Olympic gold medal and 1 Silver in her pet event over 2 Olympics.

You want to talk about amazing Olympic stories by an Australian? 1996 Keiran Perkins in the 1500 final. Sick and badly out of form he barely scraped into the final qualifying 8th. He swum from lane 8 and led from start to finish in one of the all time great performances. First Australian since Dawn Fraser to win gold at consecutive olympics in the same event outside Australia (only the second person to do it), Held multiple world records and then went on to the 2000 Olympics as the old man of the swimming team and won Silver behind Grant Hackett.

Held the 1500m world record for 10 years
Held the 800m world record for 9 years
Held the 400m world record for 5 years
First person in history to hold the Olympic, World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific titles simultaneously.

But it was his swim in the 1996 final under extreme duress that stands up.

On top of this the mens 1500m is to swimming what the 10k is to running. They are widely regarded as the toughest events at the summer olympics.

You want to talk about exceptional sporting moments or careers. Jack Brabham built and raced his own car to win an F1 world championship. First and only ever person to do it. All after fighting his way up through the racing world starting racing in the midget car series in Australia. Was a key designer in the cars that he won the 59 and 60 F1 championships in but it is his 1966 F1 title that is the standout.

You want to talk about exceptional performances by women in sport. Betty Cuthbert won the 100,200,400m gold medals at the 1956 olympics at 18 years old. (they only had 3 sprint events for women back then) She managed to hide an injury to get selected for the 1964 team and was only kept on the team after agreeing to wear a toe/foot support and complete rehabilitation in the lead up to the games. She comes from behind and wins by a head. Held 14 world records.

Dawn Fraser held the womens 100m world record for just over 15 years.

JK in an enormously s**t side kicking 8 goals in his final game was a great final performance but even though he is very modest, he was fed as much as possible. It's an amazing way to end an amazing career where for a period of 3 years he was genuinely the best forward in the competition even overshadowing Franklin. But it's not even one of the most amazing Footy stories let alone comparing to other performances by Australian sportspeople.

You can basically start and finish any Australian sporting achievements with Don Bradman. So far easily the greatest player of his sport and as a team sport you rely on others as well. His finest performance however came at age 21 in England in 1930. Walked out to bat after only 11 balls and finished the day on 309 not out. Is credited with a large part of the revival of Test cricket after WW2 as well as providing hope and inspiration for Australians during the great depression. Also averaged over 110 in shield cricket and lost most of the best years of his career to world war 2.

The thing about Cathy, for those of us old enough to remember, is that she became the great hope of Australian athletics in the mid 90s when the sport was at a low ebb nationally. She came along and nearly pinched gold in Atlanta and for the next 4 years the weight of expectation on her shoulders was as immense as it can ever get. Crushing. She became the face of the Sydney games and for 45 seconds in the year 2000 she had an entire nation watching her to see if she could fulfil her destiny and make a nation proud. Talk about pressure. THAT, is why her performance was so great.
