Most people in the education field will tell you that adults learn by doing stuff. I know..... Someone should tell teachers and university lecturers who sit up the front and talk about how to do something etc. But I agree that he needs more VFL games, because he can gain confidence from succeeding at a lower level.
For sure definitely get him out and playing that's where he'll gain the most. However I want to fast track him so I am hoping to supplement his education anyway I can.

yeh but he is 20. I wouldnt ask him to spend his nights watching videos....better to have him chasing women. I want him married to a nice Aussie girl so he re-signs.

Supplements?

Whoops I only meant we should gear him up for a big season...
I mean we should look to inject him straight into the seniors...
Ah what I should have said was we are looking for a positive test of his skills...

Ah hell just give him roids!

They need to stuff as much football into this kid as possible. I'm talking playing, watching, skills coaching etc. His homework should be to watch at least 20 replay games of AFL a week, live when possible. Once he understands how the game flows and works he will be awesome. Has the athletic ability and attributes that other players dream of. He really just needs to learn how AFL works, leaving him in the VFL for the time being will be the best way to approach this with a couple of tastes of AFL level here and there.

I think we should give him an extended run in the AFL, dropping him and promoting him every 2nd week won't help his development. I truly believe once he gains confidence in the AFL and gets used to the pace he can have a serious impact on the scoreboard just like in the VFL

I just don't him to play as the sub. He played a few games as an AFL sub last year, where I think he would have benefitted more from full games in the VFL.

Has incredible pace and athletic ability as has been said many times, seems to have picked up the skills ok, seems reliable enough by hand and foot and is a decent tackler.

Just needs to pick up the smarts stuff, reading the play, reading the ball coming in and off packs and using his body to effect in contested situations, positioning himself on the ground etc.

This area of his development is still the great unknown but, I would say that if he can develop confidence in this area and take the game on then he could indeed be something very special.

I'd like to see him running off half back.
That way he has the ball coming to him instead of having to go get it.
(He has the athleticism to go with almost every player in the AFL, it would just come down to his footy brain)
He could then use his pace to get it out of the back 50.
It would also add another string to his bow.
Imagine Eddie Betts, Garlett or even Jetta having to try and chase him down.
These are the type of guys that have killed us in the past.

I think he wouldn't work in defense, just doesn't have the mindset of skill set and while he is learning the game let him stick with 1 position

Watching tonights game reinforced my thoughts, did some blistering runs and great delivery's. Looked good in the air too and kicked a nice goal

His effort showed improvement I thought. He did a couple of really nice things, in particular a bit of play in the second half in the middle where he gathered the ball in a heavily contested situation and somehow suddenly burst from the pack with the ball. It was extreme pace that took everyone by surprise. That's a rare weapon.

I also think his foot skills are very sound.

One thing ive noticed with the Irish boys is that they struggle with the man on the mark and Mooney is no different. He needs to either play on immediately or take those 3 or 4 steps back so that he doesnt kick into the man. Its the little things like this that he needs to work on but if he does it will come in time.

Yes....(I'm gonna say it)...he could be anything !!
Has to learn how to get out of trouble. Has to learn how not to get into trouble. Has to improve decision making...last night was an example.....not passing off to player in a better position...Bucks would have spoken to him last night (not the first or last AFL player to be guilty of that).
Massive upside.

Last night he got out of trouble by simply running away from everyone in a straight line toward goal. Got a "WOW!" from the commentary team too.

I was impressed by the roadrunner last night! That play through the middle was the highlight of the night for me. He looked almost Pendles like dodging all the lions players. Finished with just the 7 disposals but his game was a lot more 'complete' I felt, seeing him tacking and going for overhead marks was just great. I think he's a pretty good set shot too!
