Is shane watson the devils son.

Why is Shane Watson written off so easily by everyone, do you think he does not have the ability to be a class international cricketer or do you think he is just not ready and should spend a couple of years in the Pura Cup.

Personally i think he has been identified as a rare and very real talent. At the moment he is probably out of his depth, but the selectors must believe he has the ability and character to be a real success. I believe this as well. What do you think

I have no problem with him as a developing cricketer, but that is what the Australia A side is for. I would personally prefer to see Greg Blewett in the team and split the last 10 overs between him, Lehmann and even Martyn/Ponting if required.

I think if the selectors, as you say, believe he is real and natural talent, then he should be persisted with as an international player.

I'm not sure whether that means he should be picked for the pressure cooker situation that will confront him at the World Cup. Blewett or someone like that might be better suited to the world Cup - then you could return to Watson as a project player.

I think he deserves a few more games before its decided to temporarily dicard him.

he will be a star but i think putting a player in be4 he's ready is going to hinder him not help him - there is only so much 1 person can cop be4 confidence is effected (ie katich)

Maybe the selectors are taking the tack that worked with Steve Waugh. He was promoted earlier than his performances demanded, mind you that was due to no other available talent, and they persisted with some very ordinary early matches.

Shane Watson is a great talent but he is definetaly overrawed with international cricket. He's been tried and it hasn't come off at the moment - let him rest and don't risk a world cup for him, then bring him back in.

But then theres the point of view of "now he's been in the team for a fair while, dropping him now could totally shatter him"

so they really are treading a fine line no matter what they do with him. But they're winning at the moment, so there is no problem if he theres but they haven't met real ODI teams such as India, Pakistan and South Africa who will be our 3 biggest challengers at the WC.

for heavens sake that has got to be the most p*ssweak excuse for not dropping someone ive ever heard!!

not having a go at you hourn, but gee whiz, if i ever hear a trevor hohns say something like that i will hunt him down.

nah i totally agree with you, i dont think that should be a reason for dropping a player, but sometime you will find people who think that, and they want to nurture a talented player rather than go against him if you get what i mean.

i couldn't tell you people who say that exactly and i dont think you'd find people who publicly say that, but there are people who you can tell think that way when they find someone talented.

Trouble is, Blewetts batting, Ponting and Martyns bowling (and Blewetts bowling for that matter) are not up to international standard. Play the extra bowler (Bichel) i think. ALL our bowlers can bat (except McGrath) or use Lehman as the 5th bowler and play an extra batsman . His bowling is very underrated I reckon.

Play Brad Hogg then!!!!

He's the perfect mix, he can bowl, bat and is probably the only player in Australia who is a better fieldsman than Ponting!!!!

but thats the thing - he can't bowl and isn't much a bat who scores the occasional big score and fielding?? well i can't comment there because i can't say i've noticed him but you can be a better fieldsman than god but if you can't do anything else than your no use.

Plus Hogg is 31 - a younger option i would've thought be the go

I think they are taking the steve waugh approach with watson, it took quite a while for Steve waugh to hold his own at international standard. Now we are travelling nicely at the moment and the exposure to the game will only make watson a better player, no one else is knocking down the door for his position either. God are any of us convinced on who should be playing at number 7, sure we have ideas, but is anyone completely convinced on who the right man for the job is.

I agree, Shane Watson is a very talented cricketer and the selectors should persist with him in the Australian team for at least the VB series and even the World Cup. If he fails to perform at this level then maybe he should be dropped back to State cricket level to improve his game and then brought back in to his Australian team.

A bit of a difference. Waugh was brought into a crap side that kept losing. They needed stability and he was identified along with Boon, Marsh, Healy as guys who a team could be built around. Watson has come into a side that is sweeping all before it and is expendible. The more I think about it the more I think we just do away with the allrounder and depending on the conditions play either 6 batsman/5 bowlers. OR 7 batsman/4 bowlers. Our last 5 batsman (except McGrath) can ALL bat and Lehmann/Martyn, Blewett even Bevan can more than make up the 10 overs.
