With all this continual talk on whether Mick should stay or go if we don't win the big one at the end of the year, i thought i'd ask the Collingwood posters a few questions:

Is there's any one better to take over the reins at the end of the year?

Should we bite the bullet on an untried BUCKS as senior coach?

Should we look for another coach with experience?

If there's no one better, should we extend Micks contract by another year and see if the landscapes changed at the end of next year?

Or do we stick with the status quoe (spelling?) and let Mick go out on his own terms?

Your thoughts.................................

How about we get through this year

I posted this in another thread a few minute ago....

It basically asks the same question as the OP, but I think is worth reposting here.

"I am still waiting for a realistic coach to be named to replace Malthouse.

Any coach who does comes in will be very, very hard to judge objectively considering the team he will be inheriting.
If the new coach does not win a flag inside two years you would have to give him the boot pronto. Nothing, absolutely nothing could possibly be acceptable given the sole mandate for change from Malthouse as coach would be to win the flag. Nothing but a flag almost instantly would be an improvement over Malthouse performance and who is to say Malthouse would not have gotten an equal if not better result.

I just see this whole argument as totally pointless. If you believe none of these questions are not already being asked annually at the club just because you are not a party to the conversation then you are nuts.

If Malthouse does not get us into the top 4 this season then I think questions will be asked at the club. The questions will basically revolve around, who the hell is up to replacing him.

After a long time and a lot of hard work the club, which includes Malthouse, has developed, traded and drafted a side which the vast majority of supporters would agree is a real chance at a flag either this year or very soon (2010, 2011). The club has for the first time in a very long time gone on record that we are going for the flag, not soon or next year but this year 2009.

If we do not win the flag this year and, as is supposed, Malthouse contract is not renewed then only Nathan Buckley could possibly take the reigns and survive if a flag was not forthcoming in his first 2 seasons.
Is Bucks ready for this?
For all we know he is already preparing for the job with the blessing and assistance of Mick.

But if he is not?

What then?

Who is this mystical coach who will step in and outperform Mick Malthouse?"

none better for the next 3 or 4 years - just so long has he's energy is up, the players respect him and his ideas are sound, he stays.

Eddie should stay too. Smart, dedicated, connected best president at the pies ever. Wilson and the like just like to stir the pot to see if they can upset a winning formula.

Of course there are, lets get rid of both Mick and Eddie and go back to the stellar outfit we were in the mid/late 90's and get some sweet priority draft picks.

What you're saying is that we should bring Alan McCallister and Tony Shaw out of retirement????

I totally agree mate.... The Malthouse and MacGuire combination have nothing on these two....

What amazes me is people keep saying that Buckley is the almost certain successor, even as early as next year.

WHY?

He has no coaching experience apart from some training drills at the AIS.
He has no formal training as a coach, whether that be practical or theoretical.

I love what Bucks did for this football club, but to just say that MM will be replaced by Bucks, without considering MM thoughts and wishes, as well as other candidates is like appointing Tony Shaw all over again.

I really can't see the difference between Shaw and Bucks, and unless Buckley get some coaching experience with a real football team, then he can become a candidate when MM decides to give it away.

For this season and the foreseeable future, MM is our best option, and we would be stupid to get rid of him right when he is positioning us for his 2nd shot at a flag.

One of them is an idjit, the other is not. That's pretty fundamental.

As far as the OP, I like Williams and Craig in terms of coaches who could be on the outer. I don't think any of us can really give much insight on the assistants.

Williams and Craig?

You think people howl down our gameplan now

unfortunatley for Tony Shaw he was ahead of his time in regards to coaching and his ideas and he didnt have the cattle to play his game style.

Mick is alright but im sure we will get another 100 of these threads in regards to Micks coaching before the end of March :)

Williams I respect as a football mind. I think he'd adjust his gameplan to suit whatever team he's coaching.

Craig has gotten unbelievable results considering his list.

About as much as the post I was replying to.

I agree. A coach's ability to think critically is of no importance.

IMO Bucks will be Collingwood's next coach. But i don't think he's ready for the job.

Can someone explain to me what's going on?

It's like the Chase the Ace/Col Davies virus has multiplied, but as a result it has become nonsensical.

Actually Optimax you are the common denominator in all these arguments, be it you trying to take the high ground by telling everyone to get back to work and stop arguing or hypocritically arguing with all and sundry the next minute.
You replied with rubbish to MDC here, you replied with rubbish to me in another thread, you have been attacking Fu all weekend in he malthouse thread

Its the CTA/nameless association turning this place into a shit fight

Yeah i agree

i love bucks but i hope we go through every option if this is MMs last year, dont just throw him to the wolves and hope for the best

All the hooplah around Bucks he has sagely ignored, unlike Voss whose ego knows no boundaries. Bucks proves his mettle by his calm demeanour and refusal to fall for the gigantic media ego stroke.

I fear that Bucks readiness might not be in alignment with our coaching turnovers. Williams I think is good as I stated on another thread, and MDC here, but he might turn out to be a disruptive influence. That said, he's good with youth development, has some balls and could really galvanise the army. I guess any change in coaching personnel will be disruptive and the point remains that it's a risky proposition to change coach with our list looking so sharp. Still, if Mick can't expand his playbook to beat the zone, we risk being bundled out in the finals when we play a team that uses the zone.

Scott could be an interim coach before Bucks, unless of course he is successful. I'd love the romance of a Williams return or a Buckley debut, but whatever works.
