As part of the Cats’ new apparel partnership with Cotton On, as announced on Tuesday, the club revealed its plans to introduce an AFL-first “rugby styled” jumper.

The skin-tight T-shirt, complete with a V-neck cut, will be worn by the club during the 2017 NAB Challenge pre-season series.

According to reports, the Cats will then consider using the rugby jersey for home and away matches in the AFL.

All jokes aside, I think it is a smart move by the clubs and the AFL even though it may be seen as 'non-traditional'.

I'd suggested the same thing on the Carlton site a while ago. The biggest marketing or merchandising drawback for the AFL guernsey is that it can't be worn casually where as a Rugby style jersey like this can.

You only have to go to Sydney or England to see how many blokes are walking around wearing authentic rugby or soccer shirts. It will mean millions more in revenue for the AFL and the clubs from merchandising.

Yeah but they look like idiots walking around in rugby and soccer shirts.
Maybe the AFL don't want that for their supporters

Why don't we introduce a culture instead? It doesn't even need to be as good as the one we deleted/retired over the last few years.

I agree as I'm not a shirt-wearer myself (or a shirt-lifter by that matter). People should adhere to the rule that men over 40 should not be seen in an AFL jumper. I'm also not a fan of the AFL polo shirts either.

However, think about the 18-25 year old (particularly the gym-boys) - given a choice between an AFL polo shirt or one of these tight rugby style shirts which would they choose ??

If you cover their shoulders and upper arms, you will have less chance to put on the greasy stuff that makes arm tackles slide up to high tackles. I am supportive of this.

Not a troll but a comment on the apparel
