As he enters his third AFL season, Richmond goalsneak Richard Tambling has declared it's time he made a major impact on the competition.
Tambling was hailed as one of the most exciting players on offer in the 2004 NAB AFL draft and the Tigers snapped him up at pick four in the same draft which produced teammate Brett Deledio, Hawthorn key position players Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin and the Bulldogs' Ryan Griffen in the first five picks.
While Tambling has made nowhere near the impact in his two seasons to date than the other four, the small forward from the Northern Territory has been solid rather than spectacular in amassing 33 games and 23 goals in two seasons.
After his debut season was ruined by injury, Tambling was a regular in the Tigers' much-improved side in 2006 as he played 21 of the 22 games and kicked 14 goals.
But now the 20-year-old has set his sights on a big year in 2007, particularly as he is enjoying an injury-free pre-season having already added three kilos to his small frame.
"I am feeling that it's time to make an impact and hopefully I can train well and get a few more games and be a good contributor to the team," he told Sportal.
"I am hoping to have a big year, I have put on a bit of weight and I have got no injuries."
Tambling said he is always conscious of trying to bulk up, having arrived at Punt Road two years ago weighing just 70kgs.
"I have put on about three kilos this pre-season so I feel a bit stronger now and I have put on about probably about five kilos since I first started."
Tambling said he knows there will be plenty of pressure to perform this year, particularly with Richmond's exciting crop of young players (including Tambling) being the focus of the club's membership campaign this season.
"Some of the boys love that but it's a good idea and hopefully we can all have a big year," he said.
"The team played pretty well at the end of last year (with wins in three of the last four games to just miss the finals) and hopefully we can start off well this year."
"We haven't had a great start lately and we have lost the first game in the last two years so hopefully next year we can get off to a strong start."
