THE Crows' new ruck giant, Ivan Maric, has revealed he is using a rival as inspiration to carve out an AFL career.

In an ironic twist, the powerfully built teenager, of Croatian descent, claims Dean Brogan, the No. 1 ruckman for Adelaide's arch rival Port Adelaide, is the player he looks up to and living proof that a successful transition can be made from basketball to Australian football.

"He's proven that it can be done," Maric, Adelaide's fourth pick (No. 40 overall) at the national draft, said.

"After hearing his story and seeing how much he's achieved, I have a lot of confidence in myself."

Brogan became the first person to play in an NBL title (1998 with Adelaide) and AFL premiership (2004 with Port).

The 18-year-old Maric has been playing the game seriously for only two years after spending most of his junior years on the basketball court.

Maric, described as a "brute of a player" at 198cm and 96kg, was a member of Victoria's under-18 basketball side.

It wasn't until his family shifted house three years ago that he realised he had a talent with the oval ball.

"I moved across the road from a footy ground (Keilor) and my mates wanted me to have a kick," Maric said.

"It snowballed from there, I guess."
Nice article on maric ;)

Maric has probably had the least publicity of our 5 recruits so far, but I like the fact that he is modelling himself on a top ruckman like Brogan, and genuinely believes he can follow the same path.

Prior to the draft, some very good judges were saying that whoever took Maric would be getting a player with huge potential upside.

If he sticks to his guns and ends up with a Brogan like career, we will really be laughing!!!

I also like the fact that he's no string bean, being described as powerfully built. I'm looking forward to seeing him and the other draftees at training in January.

2007 - Rucks: Meeson and Maric - it has a good ring to it!! ;)

I read somewhere that he'd just put on 10kg. recently.

Going to be a big boy then.

Come on "THE BRUTE" "Onya Eevaaaan" "Good one Lurch"

Before the draft Crow-mosone made a very astute statement which I agreed with at the time. He said the best player we pick up in this draft is unlikely to be our first pick.

I am not saying that Meesen will not be good. I happen to rate him very highly but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Maric turns out to be a better player. Ivan has played footy for only 2 years and has a HUGE upside. He is also a more genuine ruckman than Meesen. AFC know that he will take time but the pleasing thing is that we don't have to worry about getting him into the gym ASAP so he is physically ready in a couple of years. He is already a solid build and we now need to place more emphasis on developing his footy rather than developing his body. At 198 cm and 96 kg he is only about a pre-season away from having a body ready for AFL footy.

I know I have said in the past that Gibson is not a ruckman at AFL level but I have been doing a bit of thinking and I think he could still end up being a ruckman. He is 195 cm now and he is only 17. I don't think its out of question that will grow another 3-5 cm. If he grows to 198 cm and with his leap and aggression he could really develop into a gun ruckman.

So does Maric have a better chance of making it than Ashley Fernee or Ben Finnin?
Given what Fernee and Finnin achieved, the worst Maric could do is break even with them ;)

I'm confident at least one of Meeson & Maric will become a long-term player for AFC which is more I can say for the above 2 players.

Fernee played in the game agaist Fitzroy where I think it was 16 goals to one at half time. He stood Jeff Hogg and gave him a bath. I think because the ball never went down that end!!

His girlfirends parent's own a very nice winery in the Coonawarra so he didn't totally luck out. I think he may have married her but not 100% sure.
