It was a mixed day for seeded players at the Kremlin Cup on Wednesday as the first round wrapped up and the second round kicked off at the prestigious 1.34 million U.S. dollars event.
Among the upset victims was Serb Ana Ivanovic, whose dismal second half of 2008 continued with a loss to Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.
Ivanovic, who won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in June and subsequently rose to No.1 in the world, had won only five matches in her five events since, losing early at Wimbledon, Montreal, the U.S. Open, Tokyo and Beijing.
Ana Ivanovic, six following tournaments after French Open 2008:
-Overall record: 5-6, 45% matches won
-tournaments won: 0
-Best win (in terms of ranking): #19 Cornet
-losses to Zheng (#133), Paszek (#94), Coin (#188), Petrova (#20), Zheng (#30), Cibulkova (20)
What the heck is going on, and how long do you think this slump will continue for? I can't see her finding any form from now until years end, but to start next year back in her favourite country with family and friends, I think she can turn it around. I'm not sure how focused she is at the moment, she seems to have lost some of her focus after she won the French Open.
IMO she’s the type of player who can get into regular slumps because her game style is either so hot or cold. Until she learns to be more patient and develops greater consistency (whether either happens remains to be seen), I can see these slumps occurring from time to time.
