NT senator Jacinta Price prepares bill calling for return of remote community alcohol bans

She's introducing a bill to reban alcohol in Indigenous communities. Where's her concern for alcohol abuse across the broader community and why is she singling out one group of people for draconian treatment? Does this bill include money for rehab centres and complimentary therapies for alcoholics or is it just a case of her virtue signalling to her hard right masters in the Liberal Party?

Imagine getting offended on behalf of someone being called a racist, who is proposing legislation imposing restrictions specifically targeting a racial group.

I somehow suspect they aren't actually offended though, and are simply using this as a tool to support racist policy without having to actually show their racism. But that may just be the cynic in me.

indigenous communities should have their own determination on the issue and the legislative support of government as necessary. In one area we operate in, the area is "dry" but alcohol is run into the community.

We offered to upgrade the road, so they weren't flooded and isolated during the wet. However this offer was rejected as the elders felt a few months of "dry" was positive to the community.

In reality, it is impossible to stop people from drinking or taking drugs. If one can't get alcohol they'll find another vice be it dope, sniffing fuel (hey why does opal exist), other solvents etc etc. Unfortunately individuals and communities will have to live and die (including their kids and unborn) by their own decisions.

Education and opportunity is the only way.

Another eyebrow raising thing that many in Oz don't appreciate is our segregated pubs. Blacks in the back and others in the front........it's like South Africa of old.

So you support an indigenous voice to parliament now?

So you support an indigenous voice to parliament now?

no..........it is racist and we don't need racism in our constitution

worse than being racist, this is a political weapon and weaponising race.
further please confirm how this racist voice will have controls to ensure the voice represents indigenous people rather than special interest groups.

You said yourself "indigenous communities should have their own determination on the issue and the legislative support of government as necessary". So they should only have self determination when it comes to booze?

oh and you can remove the word indigenous and leave it as "communities should have their own determination on the issue and the legislative support of government as necessary"

alcohol is a community issue and if a community wants special laws relevant to the needs of the community, they should have the power and legislative support to achieve that

1) the article was referring to indigenous communities and your post and title referred to racism. Thus the reference to indigenous communities. but all communities should have power to determine special alcohol restrictions, if state laws are failing
2) local communities should have a range of powers and their is an established demarcation between the different layers of government
3) any race should not have special privilege over others based on race. is racism that hard to understand?

We already have racism in our Constitution.
s.51 (xxvi). The race power.
The High Court said in the Kartinyeri case that it isn't limited to things that benefit our first peoples or any race that the law is targeted at.

Why is she singling out the indigenous population when a quick stroll through any entertainment precinct in the country on a Saturday night will tell you that alcohol related violence isn't the sole problem of Aboriginal Australia?

Men, the elderly, poor people, the overweight etc all have worse health outcomes than those who are not those things, but no ban on alcohol is enacted for that group.
How is she libertarian?

As the current darling of the right all she needs to do is tap about “freedom” 24/7, and then propose a list of things to ban that right wingers have no problem with banning.

Essentially another grifter, there was a hole in the market for a racist woman of colour so she thought she could fill the void. She’s our Candace Owens.

Totally.

If we had a decent investigative political interview program in this country she’d get utterly destroyed on it.

So she’s sticking mostly to talkback radio, Daiky Mail and Murdoch.

She was a councillor and deputy mayor of Alice Springs. She would have spent a lot of time at the coalface of indigenous issues. Despite her conservative ideology that I rarely see eye to eye with I'd still give some credit where it's due.

It is also common knowledge up in the top end that elders have collaborated with territory government members for stricter measures on alcohol for their own people, which is a reason why the indigenous have been 'unfairly targeted' with the policing of legislation such as proof of ID to enter bottleshops and banned drinkers registers.

It's a complex issue and I'm not going to pass negative judgement on indigenous drinking alcohol as they should be able to subject to the same rules as everyone else and I am no angel myself with my alcohol consumption and have gotten myself into trouble in the past. But I suspect indigenous leaders have different views on their own members using that substance.

It's getting really boring and predictable now. Unfortunately the media love it as it generates outrage which turns into clicks. zzzzzzz
