Hey all

Been watching the game tonight and very impressed by Jack.

However, with all the players jostling for the forward spots, do you see Jack being in our best 22 each week? Or is he going to have to rely on injuries or matchups to get a regular game.

Dont get me wrong, he is one of my faves and i want him in there, but gee our forward line looks strong.

Think about it: Jack, Rocca, Rusling, Thomas, Davis, Cloke, Didak, Reid, Medders - plus the players who pinch hit in there, its gonna be tough.

Or maybe he IS in each week, and someone else is slightly on the outer?

Spoilt for choice it seems...interested on your thoughts

Cheers

Chris

You're watching the game tonight AND asking that question?

Yeah i know, been an absolute star tonight. HArd at the ball and very focussed.

I'm just saying that there are only so many spots. If not Jack, then who misses out?

Right now it is his spot to lose.

Rocca, Anthony and Trav will be the key forwards come round 1 (assuming Rocca is right...) and the others need to come and get him through the twos.

Also note Thomas running off the half back... I got a lot of stick when I said that he would do that this year. Good role for him I reckon in a crowded forward line. He seems better suited to this role than a midfield role.

Didn't do anything extraordinary today - in fact, I don't think he did much different to last week when several people had a go at him. All that changed was that he finally had single coverage and the delivery was better.

To answer the qn, yes he is certainly in our best 22. He's a footballer's footballer.

I dub him "The Natural".

Reid has been given numerous opportunities to perform, and although injured last year, is yet to show even a glimpse of something remotely good. Hopefully Rusling can stay on the park and take a tired Rocca's possie, leaving it with a setup which includes talls Trav, John-call-me-Jack, Rusling and smalls Med, Davis and either of Daisy or Dids, with the other playing mid to hb.

Rusling doesn't have a place in our best 22 at the moment.

Mmm, not sure about that. If Rocca is not fit, i'd be popping for Rusling ahead of Dawes at the moment if we need three tall forwards - Cloke, Anthony and Rusling, small forwards Medders / McCaffer / and other cameo small forwards from Didak / Thomas / Dick.

Rusling has a lot to offer and kicks pretty true.

Thought Goldie and Cox both played magnificent games tonite with Cox ahead there. If Thomas plays back in the season proper on jetty small forwards, poor old Cox and Goldie will suffer. What a cruel game, but nice to have such options.

I thought Barham was very zippy tonight - his pace is bloody amazing. Stats don't suggest he had much impact, but I really like the look of him and his pace will be an asset. Cook was fairly ordinary in terms of decision making.

I disagree. Like the look of Reid so far through the NAB cup, and unlike Rusling he's very versatile.

I'd like to go in with Cloke, Anthony and Reid as the "swing" tall on the bench, regardless of whether Rocca's up or not.

Surely that guy is kidding? Reid, still only 19, hasn't even shown a GLIMPSE of being REMOTELY good? Not only do i disagree with that, i reckon he's played a really good game last week, and looks ready to take the next step which is great for a guy who is still so young. Baffles me some of the comments on here, tbh.

Also disagree about Reid. He was very good last week and did his job tonight. He definitely has to keep playing AFL and we have to accept his odd mistake.

Anthony was good tonight. He is in our 22 and it will be interesting to see what role he plays this year. I thought they would put him down back in the NAB, but they seem keen to keep him forward.

For a tall, lankyesque forward / backman, Reid has great pace and crisp hands. His marking and kicking up forward put him well behind Rusling in my view. I don't care if Rusling appears to be a one trick pony - although I think there are strong elements of caricature in this, a la McCaffer. Ruslings speed and ability to take a contested mark above and in a pack, as well as his kicking puts him for me as a must in Collingwoods future forward-line structure. Trav - Anthony - Rusling in a three tall forward line.

as far as forwards go reid isn't even in contention for a permanent role. thats why he's in defence and thats where he has to be if he hopes of making it consistently in the 22. he has huge potential but he needs more experience at afl level before he can challange and the only way he's getting that is in defence. when rocca goes, most likely at years end the real questions gonna be reid, rusling or dawes? and being versatile is the only thing reid has over the other two at the momnet anyway because their much better forwards.

Holy crap! So many riches yet so little spots. I suspect that we would be using at least one of those players as trade bate come year end. Possibly Rusling, and Rocca retiring, would leave us with Cloke, Reid, Anthony, Dawes. Hence Anthony has to be in our top 22 as he is clearly part of our future.

I had forgotten about Dawes!!

Good discussion here lads, we cant all agree on who is in and out, but what we can agree upon is that we seem to have a good pool of talent to rotate through the forward line which makes me happy.

Looking forward to (hopefully) a big year.

At the rate we're going, I think it's fair to say that our forward set up ATM should be:

(pocket) - Anthony - Macaffer (Medhurst when he's back)
Didak - Cloke - Reid

In the pocket, you'd rotate through Thomas, Leon, Swan, Lockyer etc.

It's possible that the likes of Rocca, Rusling and Dawes might force their way in, but I think the guys that are in there have played well enough to be given their spots for the regular season. You'd only drop them for the guys that haven't really played if the guys that were in there had played crap, which they haven't.

Bring the others in through the VFL (yes, even Rocca - Make him prove he's fit).
