Senior Jack Steele

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but does Jack Steele have any Mauri or Pacific Islander blood in him? His and his sister's face both look a little like they've got family round that way.

No idea, we are a pretty mixed bag in Oz, he looks like he could have any number of heritages. Minch looks southern European but Minchington sounds like an English lord of the manor type name. Johnny Patton, Koby Steven and Gresham are all proud indigenous boys but you wouldn't immediately pick them as having that background. One of my sons mates is part Maori and he looks like a junior version of Dan Hannebery.

Need more hype for this man-beast

Hopefully going to be the first in #9 to do well since the G-Train and scare campaigners as much as Frase did to boot.

Can't wait for Round 1 seeing him in action

Super excited to actually have this kid on our list. My mate has a pretty good knack at calling whether players will be guns purely on their names. He liked Jack Steele a lot I can tell you that! He caught my eye when I watched a few Giants games and I liked what I saw and thought that out of all the (gettable) Giants kids he'd be close to the top of the list. Awesome that I'm actually gonna get the chance to cheer him on in Saints colours for years to come!

For what it's worth, my mate also said Blake Acres would be a gun in late November 2013 :P

ST KILDA recruit Jack Steele has a point to prove after being starved of opportunity at Greater Western Sydney.

Steele, 21, is on a restricted program until mid-January but expects to be ready for intra-club and pre-season games.

The Saints parted with a future second-round pick to secure the Canberra-bred Giants Academy product.

“I really want to get inside the centre bounce, really show that I can play that role,” Steele said.

“I just want to prove myself as much as I can by playing consistent games and playing well in the midfield and showing people that don’t think I should be in the midfield that I’m good enough to be there.”

The 2014 No. 24 pick, who played 17 games in two years at the Giants, had surgery on his left foot last September to repair a fractured metatarsal.

“The only way to do that is to show my professionalism as much as I can by doing the little things right and everyone will eventually see that,” Steele said.

“I’m eating right and I’m doing the extras, doing everything to a tee and eventually that will earn respect and once I do get on the track (fully fit) the boys will see the work that I’ve done.”

Steele holds no grudges about leaving the Giants.

They just had too many weapons in the midfield.

“It’s just so much depth and so many people wanting to go through there that sometimes you just don’t get the opportunity,” he said.

The tenacious midfielder, who averaged 36 disposals and eight tackles in the NEAFL, brings more depth to St Kilda’s exciting on-ball brigade.

“I know we’re heading in the right direction,” Steele said.

“Just missed out on finals (last year) so I think myself, and the other recruits, can really help grow the depth of the list … and potentially make finals next year and the next couple of years,” he said.

“We’re still a very good chance to make finals in the next couple of years and hopefully we do.”

Averaged 36 disp in NEAFL.
Kinda indicates he was either running around them like witches hats or through them.
Looking at the size of the kid maybe the second option.

Can't wait to see him play!

Jack Steele comes to the Saints off the back of 2 seasons with the GWS Giants, where he was historically the first GWS academy selection made back in the 2014 National Draft at pick 24. Having played 17 games in his first 2 seasons, Jack Steele was traded to StKilda in the 2016 Trade Period for a future (2017) 2nd round selection.

Jack was originally drafted from the GWS Academy in Canberra as a strong Midfielder who also displayed great ability to play forward. He has excellent poise and balance and is an effective lead-up player. He won All-Australian honours as NSW/ACT's MVP in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in 2014. A good all round athlete, Jack finished equal seventh in the 3-km time trial in 10:11, recorded an equal-sixth best 15.1 in the beep test and scored 26/30 in the kicking test at the 2014 Draft Combine.

Jack Steele arrives at StKilda after an indifferent 2016 season that saw him lose his position in the GWS best 22 during the middle of the season due to a hand injury sustained in GWS's round 17 win against Brisbane. He missed 2 weeks then came back into the UWS team & dominated the midfield before rolling his ankle badly at training on the ANZ stadium turf on the eve of the AFL & NEAFL finals. Scans later revealed that in spraining his ankle quite badly, Jack had sustained a season ending avulsion fracture of the base of the 5th metatarsal, which would see him sidelined for 3 months.

Starting off his time at his new club, Jack has been working on a modified training program through November & December, and was then introduced to the main squad in mid-January.

Jack is viewed by the Saints as a tall, big bodied midfielder that can play a solid inside role for the club for many years to come, with also the versatility of being able to play a lead-up role & be a marking target while resting in the forward line.

Jack Steele (188cm, 88kg)
17 games
9 goals
15 disposals per game
4.75 tackles
6.24 contested possessions
Highest possession game: 21

Jack Steele knew St Kilda possessed plenty of talent when he decided to move from the Giants at the end of last season. But he admits he has been surprised by the level of depth and quality at Linen House Centre.

The hard-nosed midfielder joined the Saints in exchange for a future second-round pick after playing 17 games in two seasons at the game's youngest franchise.

“It did surprise me when I first came here,” Steele told reporters at his first press conference since crossing from Greater Western Sydney last October.

“Just people who I hadn’t really heard of, who hadn’t played games like first or second year’s I hadn’t seen much of, they really surprised me with their professionalism and their skill on and off the field.”

Steele, 21, made the decision to change clubs after being starved of opportunity during his time in western Sydney.

Probably been the most impressive recruit thus far. And should be best 22 as long as he does well enough this week against Sydney .

Looking like a serious find. In some ways his injury may have helped us as it prevented him from getting into the GWS side. He's clearly ready to be a part of a good AFL midfield.

Looks like we had a huge win for a future second round pick.
One of the few that GWS have lost so far that they would be bleeding about.

The AFL’s rising stars: Your team’s breakout candidate in 2017

St Kilda – Jack Steele
Despite limited opportunities in his time at GWS, Steele showed his ability to rack up possessions, as well as demonstrating\ his hardness around the ball in the NEAFL.

His JLT form was excellent – after limited game time against Port Adelaide in the first round, he amassed 53 disposals and 20 tackles in the final two games. His strengths will complement the Saints’ on-ball brigade well, and he looks set for a big year as a best-22 player.

Watched the Pies replay again. Bloke is a jet. Jaxons on SS pointed out his handball with just over 6 min to go. Commentaters missed it. Made the play. When he gets full fitness I reckon he will go to another level. Still only 21.....we've got ourselves a top player for a long time.

Jack's chugging along. I feel like we've just accepted him as part of the furniture and he's already one of our better performed players from the last few drafts.

Reckon he's still working up match fitness, had an incredible first half on the weekend and was tracking for a huge game but fell away a little.

At the very least we know he'll contribute with tackles if he's not getting much of the ball. Averaging 7.2 per game!

He has been one of our best in almost all games he has played , not bad for a guy who hasn't played much senior football . He's a tackling machine . Agree that he needs to build his tank a bit more but it's pretty good considering he hasn't been in the ones much at GWS . They might see him now as one who got away, still they have so much talent there I don't think he would be getting a game there still as they wouldn't have seen what we are .

“EVERYTHING.”

That was Jack Steele’s response when he was asked what it meant to be a Saint on Friday night.

“I suppose the Saints wanted me, the Giants didn’t,” Steele told foxfooty.com.au.

“I had no choice really. But it has been the best opportunity I’ve ever had.

“I’m so glad I can call myself a Saint. It’s a club full of history. I’m glad I’m here and I can be a Saint for a long time.”
