JACKSON CALLOW & KAINE BALDWIN?

Has anyone other than Knightmare talked up Callow?
That’s enough for me. It’s a rookie spot. We’ve had worse.
May not be the prototype forward Buckley was talking about. Is he more Ben Brown than Jeremy Cameron?

What’s this laziness nonsense? Callow is well known for running his opponents ragged in the TSL. His endurance and effort is not an issue. It’s his athleticism and the man-child effect that has caused the question marks on him.
Doesn't look any less athletic than Roughy - shorter obviously, but looks an infinitely better mark. Just sign him up - unless he can't play and then don't.

I'd probably edge towards Callow in that scenario. Both have some potential, but Callow a bit better contested - though Borlase is strong in that area - although Borlase has played at a higher standard (SANFL League vs TSL) which helps his case.

What were their ground ball numbers like? My gut feel is that the defining trait for a KPP in 2021 is winning ground ball and the rest falls into place from there. At a guess the ball probably spends 80% of the time I50 on the ground so when you’re predominantly stay at home you need that ball hunting capacity. It’s the main reason I wouldn’t sleep on McInnes as a Mihocek type KPF down the track.

Baldwin is 100% the injuries. If he didn’t have two, he would have been drafted. Had he had a clean run - and again it’s hypothetical - he should have been Top 10. He and Thilthorpe were talked up as pretty similar in terms of range, though Thilthorpe was probably always Top 5, Baldwin Top 10. It’s a shame what injuries can do but surely given it’s a rookie spot someone will risk it.

Probably the kicker for him is that his second ACL reco was only 6 months ago so he is full on in the rehab group for the next 4-5 months at least and I don't think any club is in a position right now to take a chance on a kid who last played footy in 2018 and has since done the same knee twice, the second time in an extremely innocuous fashion with no sudden change of direction or any real bodily contact involved.

Looking back at it I don't think clubs would often draft any kid who has missed their entire U18's career due to injury just based on their previous U16's form, but we were all entranced by the writeups about how good he was back then whilst blithely ignoring that his second reco was only 5 months prior to the draft.

I reckon that’s why you take a chance on him. Won’t play a lot in 2021 but if he is over the knee issues you could potentially have 1 of the best 2020 KPF prospects available 2022 and beyond. Being over the knee issues is a big if though.

he is exactly what we should be using a rookie spot on. risk and reward.

Liam McMahon seems to have the mobility.

If Callow wasn't there as well then I'd say yes definitely take a chance on him. Having both of them there though with each having their issues confuses things a bit and I don't think we can take both of them on.

I definitely agree for KPF. But with intercept marking being so important and so much easier, and with usually more teammates at the fall of the ball, I still think that KPDs can rely on an their aerial work without needing as good a ground level game. I suspect that Callow is simply seen as too slow for either end.

It'll be an interesting one to watch with kpf. In the 90s and 00s, the recruiting trend for ruckman was to pick the agile athletic guys with decent skills really early and the bulky guys who did the big man things really well often slipped to the rookie draft. But it was often the bulky guys who had the better careers. Could be history repeating itself or the recruiters may be on the money this time.

Nah, definitely wouldn’t take both. Baldwin the more balanced option but with injury issues, Callow no injury issues. I think I’d still opt for Baldwin.

Baldwin = KP Tom Swift.

Baldwin = KP Tom Swift.

You made me go look him up dammit. lol

Given what he went through it was probably a good effort to rack up 34 games before he pulled the pin at 22, even with the Eagles offering him another year. I guess he was probably somewhat disaffected in part by the introduction of the substitute rule, as I'd imagine a lot of fringe players might have been at the time.

Looking at his games logs he looked pretty serviceable without being a standout, but I can see where you're going given that he looked like the next big thing in the U16 carnival only to be cruelled by successive knee injuries in his U17 and U18 years.

Maybe, maybe not. That’s the chance you take.

He was studying medicine. I suspect he decided that was a better career option than fringe AFL player.

I read that he was looking at studying medicine but it's not the path he ended up following as he is now in the finance sector.
