As there seems to be a lot of talk about Surjan in the team selection thread, I figured he deserves his own thread to talk about all the conspiracy theories surrounding him.

"Report": Jacob Surjan turned up to preseason unfit and overweight (presumably due to laziness).

Now I've seen this mentioned countless times in many different threads, but I still can't find any article mentioning this. Where did this report come from? Was it just a conspiracy theory that's just built up to now become a fact, or is there some evidence online somewhere? Did this come off the back of his demotion from vice captain?

Rumour: Jacob Surjan did a fitness test with Freo in the offseason.

This rumour makes little sense, but it seems to have gathered steam over the last coupla weeks. Where did this one come from? Not only was he coming back from injury, therefore the timing is ridiculous for this story, but he's still got a whole year left on his contract (or more? I don't know the specifics, but's he's at least contracted for this year obviously).

------

So basically, on top of these, is the constant suggestion that Surjan is unfit and that's why he's not guaranteed a spot in our 22. Is this stemming from any actual evidence, or is it mere guesswork from posters because of the "report" from the preseason, combined with the fact he was subbed off a couple of games in a row?

If you honestly believe that Surjan's form isn't up to it and you're happy for him to be left out of the team because of that, then that's perfectly okay.

But I'm sick of seeing these stories going around with nothing to actually back them up, so I was wondering if someone could help me as to where their origins lie.

maybe the whole dmotlop and girlfriend thing just got too much for surj

i also thought he was not a big choco fan, but maybe his relationship with primus is even worse

I am a big fan on surj, but maybe he needs to look to freo or wce to refresh his afl career. At the end of the day, if he can't get a gig at PAFC or doesn't like his current work environment he has no choice but to move on.

whatever the issue is with surj, PAFC has more important things to worry about and surj needs to get a little selfish and worry about what is good for him!

I have a couple of people who I train who say they hear things from good sources but you can only take things with a grain of salt. They say the Laidley spat was about senior players undermining the coaches at the club such as Matty Primus.

He did not point any fingers but said that the club will continue playing youngsters while anybody who does not tow the line will play the rest of the year in the SANFL. What we are seeing now is the breaking up of the factionalism of the old days.

Considering Surjan's knee was buggered in the pre-season it is impossible to imagine the second rumour is even physically possible

I'd be really gutted if we lost him but it seems like there's always been concerns over his fitness.

He didn't look fit yesterday, seemed slow but is always a team first players, loved his block for Westy in the first :)

It was a bit of a shocker, I was disappointed.

Although it must be taken into account that all of a sudden he's being played in the forward line this year, so that might be why he looks out of sorts.

I still don't believe fitness is an issue - Yarran is MUCH faster than Surjan, so I think he was made to look more unfit than he actually is.

Bernie after round 3 or 4 Rhode was on AA. He was basically saying due to Surjans injury (knee) in the pre season ,eh's lost his spot to Logan, they thing Logan has done everything he's asked and therefore can't be pushed out. Obviously posted dated now.

So Surjan had to find himself a new spot. Very interesting I thought at the time, still is.

I asked Dom on Sunday night and he said that Surj's fitness wasn't an issue. I still think he doesnt look 100% though.

No rumour or inside info, just observation - he might be finished at the PAFC.

I hope I am wrong.

if it's Logan taking his spot and some niggling injuries that is holding Surj back then that's a relief. he just needs to get his body right and reinvent himself as a hard midfielder/utility and hopefully cement his spot in the team.

Yep, agree. No preseason and its showing

I asked Surj himself on twitter after "Ralph the Rumour Monger" mentioned the Surj/Freo rumour. His reply was that there is no way he would even be allowed to as he was still contracted by the Power, and spent his preseason cycling up Mt Lofty each day. He missed a lot of last season so there is no way he could come back to preseason training when he did and be in tip top shape.

Miss a lot of the preseason and you will struggle that year. I think Surj is seeing that this year. Definitely no shortage of effort or desire on his part.

So that was your tweet! :)

Surj had a knee op mid last season and had more surgery late in the season. It was reported he returned from his end of season break outside the club limits. He took up bike riding to get back into shape losing 8-9kg so he must have blown out a bit.

Jacob Surjan wheels into shape

Pittard also returned to training outside the club limits but he just took their advice to put on weight too literally. ;)

I think a lot of our reactions to players being dropped is based on past perceptions of 'gold passes'. We're still expecting players like Surjan and Chad to be walk up starts and when they're not, we assume there's something other than fitness or form to be the reason.

Mark "Pavlov" Williams had us trained well. ;)

I think you are right.
