News Jake Batchelor article

G'day folks,

Not sure if this has been shared yet but I stumbled across a decent article this morning about Jake Batchelor - just your usual, generic article but did have some nice insights about his first year.

In particular, I was quietly impressed to note that he was the captain of the Dandenong stingrays (wasn't aware he was until now) though that would help explain why the kid has such a mature and well rounded head on his shoulders - which probably helps justify the club's insistent on only drafting players who perform well on the psych tests.

I'm backing the club to pick up another 2 gems with pick 15 and 26 in the upcoming draft :thumbsu:

Exactly what we needed at pick 30 last year. I wasn't convinced when we read his name out mostly because I hadn't really heard much about him. It didn't take long for me to realise this kid will play 200 games for the club.

Great player and seems to have a great head on his shoulders. Leadership qualities is what Francis & co want with good foot skills of course. Batchelor fits into that category.

He actually looked like a man in his first year. he'd pass for a 28 year old. Like everyone's saying an inspired selection, given no one was talking about him before the draft...

i cant get my head around him been 19 lol. i get excited every time i see a Richmond player comment on how they dont want to be at any club besides the tigers. they know that success is around the corner :D go tigers!!!

Such an asset. Already a leader and will be amongst our best players for the next 10 years.

IMO the willingness for the young players to remain ' Tigers 4 Life ' is a significant compliment to Chris Newman and the legacy Ben Cousins, despite his short stay , has left !
Batchellor is a gun , a true footballer who through improved athletic ability will only improve .
Although aware he doesn't process the flair , yet , nor have we seen whether he pocess' the ability to play AFL midfield, I don't rate him far behind Cotchin and Martin as some may !

Not sure if I'd credit Ben Cousins too much to the Richmond loyalty culture since at the end of the day he's still a West Coast man. Definitely Newy though, I'd also say young leaders like Riewoldt, Rance and Cotchin make the transition into the AFL environment easier since they're all roughly the same age. We should really celebrate the fact that if (and it's a big if) nobody is poached by GWS next year we have survived thanks to our wonderful culture meanin g young players don't want to leave.

And btw loving the Batchelor article. Can't speak highly enough of him.

Cousins has often stated he feels a Richmond player and I think his application and experiences has left a great impact on players like Cotchin and Jack which inturn seems to be getting carried on by the likes of Batch !

A new breed of tiger player...i like very much... :thumbsu: ...

Batchelor sums up our new recruiting policy - good disposal and decison making, footballer rather than athlete, not a ********. FJ really hasn't made too many blues over the last 4 years or so :thumbsu:

Jeez its a feels good not cringing every time we bring the ball outta defence... Weird feeling though after the last 25 odd years.

Lmao, Cousins? What about a man named Matthew Richardson? Played his whole career in one of Richmonds worst ever periods of ineptness with constant in house bullshit and unprofessionalism, not to mention knocking back offers from other clubs that were in Premiership contention where he most likely would have a Premiership medallion around his neck if it wasn't for loyalty.

Cousins had no choice but to play for us as no other club would take him, hardly loyal, determined yes loyal no.

Sick of this shit. All it takes is one good year and everyone creams their pants. Yes he is good and congratulations to him however we have a terrible habit of hailing players kings before they do anything and as a result they become arrogent and never reach their potential.

Yes I'm sure Batchelor reads Bigfooty.

Heh, well said on so many fronts :thumbsu:

Although I understand what you're saying there SG... you have to admit what Batch showed in his first year is a lot more promising than a few flashy games from the likes of Polo, Fiora etc in their first years.

Yes, he has a long way to go... but he has a mature head on him, his body is a great size for his age, his disposal is good, and he's courageous.

Not unlike what I remember of Newy in his first year.

Piss off. We are allowed to be excited about a young player - it's what supporting is about. You're the guy claiming we are a lock to play finals next year. You're doing enough pant creaming for the lot of us.
