I remember him getting Sam Gray comparisons on the Port board when he was drafted

Fair to say he’s exceeded those expectations lol

What an egregious insult, comparing any draftee to Sam Gray. Who said that? Should be ban on sight around here

I always thought Gray was a handy enough player. Good enough to be the 19th to 22nd best player in a side that makes finals.

Richer man's Ned McHenry.

I'm not a huge fan of these kind of contracts. Seems like a good way to demotivate a player.

Very much a glass half empty view

Elite Professional athletes are motivated by success and winning championships

For years our supporters have whinged that we have lost players to the go-home factor, now we have serious talent that want to commit long term to our journey, supporters still complain [emoji23]

What a weirdly unnecessary deal for both parties.

I think it’s one of the smartest moves the Crows have done this year. Soligo looks like genuine A-grade talent, appears to be the club-loyal type, and he’s an absolute must-keep.

By making it known we’ve done a lengthy contract with this one, I can see it has some other added positives:
  • this gives other Crows lads the incentive “if you play well, you will be rewarded”
  • shows the footy world we’re now a team where an interstate footballer is happy to stay at Adelaide for the long haul.
  • may create more interest in other interstate players to want to come join us.

I don’t mean to dampen the mood, but does anyone else think 6 years is a bit much? Was already contracted til 2025 so feels unnecessary, as good as Soligo looks we were already in a comfortable position to wait and see with him.
I imagine this type of deal allows us to plan our salary cap long term. I’m hoping the way it works is that guys like Rachelle and Soligo get a big pay day early which will set them up for life. Come 2025-2028 when we should be in our window, our salary cap will still be in good shape to maintain a flag contending squad together and/or even top up with further talent.

Soligo is not near the end of his current contract. So the risk of losing him was low.

He's clearly an exceptionally talented player. So there's little benefit to Soligo in locking himself to a single club for such a long time (and out of potential better offers.)

He also has a bad consistency problem currently. The sort of thing that can be easily fixed with a pre-season discussion with the proper motivation. But less easily if a player knows he is secure for most of a decade.

There's also a lesser issue that he's probably in the worst form since he became a regular player at the moment. And gets a 7 year deal as a reward.

IMHO. There's the high risk the club ends up either being sold a bill of goods; Or with a bitter player looking for a way out of the bad deal they've locked themselves into.

I like Soglio, but considering we've got a third year blues thing going with our midfield prospects at the moment, I can't say I'm confident a four year extension is the right move at this point.

Definition of "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE" - Pleasing this Board.

We finally have interstate young guns willing to sign long term contracts because they are committed to where Nick's and the club are heading with great comradery and buy in amongst the playing group and yet still the negativity reigns.
You're never going to have everyone happy with every decision

But I think it's fair to the say the majority of the board is a fan of this move, from I can tell

don’t see an issue both parties obviously happy,

These long term deals for talented youth are becoming more common in league, see blakey

you wonder if its to do with helping plan salary cap (as much as retention)

I get a bit of a feeling we're also IDing guys we are 100% locked into wanting to keep and making sure we put them out of the way of an incoming Tasmania team if we can. My gut feel would be you would have an easier time lifestyle wise prying a guy out of Adelaide then you would Melbourne so we may be a bit of a target for them.

In fact the negativity across the board is so wearisome I often consider not bothering with BF anymore.

The instant you point it out, you're accused of accepting mediocrity, being part of the rainbow and unicorn brigade, stifling discussion, censoring criticism, and other such puerile piss weak tropes.

Yes, at appropriate times I've been guilty of it too, and look what effect that had on the club - SFA.

People gotta people I suppose.

Yasssss, lets go Sog!!!

They pay a bit overs now with the hopes that it's a good value deal in the last 2 or 3 years of the contract.

Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't (Milera).

Even though contracts don't mean what they used to hopefully keeps Vic teams at bay a bit longer.
Being out for 2 consecutive years during the pandemic didn't help but at least we've seen the past month or so he hasn't lost his evasion, speed and agility which was his main asset.
