There are a gazillion reasons to not like this guy, but changing his name is not one of them.

For the record, his birth father was Donald Bowman, but his parents divorced when he was very young and he had nothing to his son so why keep his name?

He was later adopted by his mum's then-husband, whose surname was Hamel. He changed it again to Vance because that was the surname of his grandparents, who primarily raised him.

He took on JD as his name because he saw the character on Scrubs and thought it was cooler than Jimmy.

There's nothing particularly controversial in any of that.

Focus on his policies, which are a disturbing mix of stupid and evil.

I'm almost ashamed to say I was born in Ohio. Moved away at 8 though, old enough to fall in love with OSU and to remember a bit about the countryside outside Columbus. Middleton is a satellite city between Cincinnati and Dayton, with a lot of military bases propping up the local economies. Ain't nothing hillbilly about it; semi-rural/outer suburbia (like where I lived) but not even close to hillbilly. Ohio has that, but on the other side of the state, across the river from Kentucky and West Virginia. THAT is serious hillbilly turf, where meth and weed have replaced moonshine. If you ever heard about the Pike County massacre, that is where it occurred.

For me, he reminds of a Taiwanese guy, son a Nationalist general, sent to Harvard, was "a mediocre student", where he wrote anti-democracy editorials and spied on pro-democracy compatriots. Golden spoon political appointments when he got back including Minister of Justice and Mayor of Taipei. Good looking, jogged in short shorts , married an intelligent woman who gave up a high-powered career for him and loathes him completely. He became President, tried cede sovereignty of an important area near international airport to China, ordered the national flag not to be flown when a CCP official visited Taipei, escaped corruption charges by blaming his secretary... And he still visits China regularly.
Like JD, a PoS skating through life.

I suspect there will be problems where local governments are taken over by MAGA types. There was an attempt in T's first term by anti-shutdown types and Qanon followers to take over a town in Washington state. I read somewhere some sort of thing where similar group was buying up land in Appalachia so they can take over the local council. I can foresee extremist activities by orphaned MAGAs distrupting meetings, hearings etc.

I actually really enjoyed it. Though I completely disagreed with his political philosophy, it was a compelling read. To be told that a lot of it might have been BS explains a lot.
